Quick question, does anyone know how to host a local Mulitplayer server for Minecraft?
|
I don't know about a local server but there's a program called Hamachi (I think) that simulates a local server over the internet. Quite easy to use actually, I have a server set up for me and my mates and I'll post the IP address when I could be arsed.
Singleplayer is a lot more fun, by the way. |
I admire any feat of engineering, virtual or otherwise. |

Also, What if Minecraft went even more badass? |
People are taking this waaay too seriously. :P (I can see why though - I'll be giving this a try once I get bored with WoW, which will probably be quite soon. Oh, and that vid was nicely done.)
|
*later* I bought it last night, thanks to what I read and watched in this thread. Then 5 hours later I realised the sun was rising... In real life. Ahh!
It's waaay too addictive. :P Incredibly good fun though. :) |

Alright, I had a quick look at the free Classic mode and I'm thinking about buying the full version. Before I accidentally buy something my PC won't be able to handle, does anyone have a definite idea of the game's minimum specs? Browsing around didn't exactly turn up much useful stuff.
Basically, if I can run the free version in-browser, how does that reflect on my ability to run the full game? |
My PCs an ancient dinosaur (7 years old, 2.17 GHz single core, Radeon 9800 Pro, 1GB RAM, Windows XP SP 2) and seems to run it perfectly okay, although sometimes it gets some framerate issues but it's still perfectly playable in windowed mode with the settings set to low. I can even run Spotify in the background while playing without it affecting performance too much. It runs like treacle when I try to play it in fullscreen, though.
Did you find this thread? I find it weird that it looks like a retro ancient DOS game from the early 1990s, but it requires a fast PC to run it. :P I know the retro-look is part of its art style, but I do wonder why it's so intensive on processing power. Surely randomly generating a world made from little blocks could be done without using so much? However, I suppose it shows that a good game doesn't need impressive graphics to make it good. EDIT: Oh yeah, and... http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1298329144 I died many times getting these words in the sky. (I quickly discovered that you can jump and place blocks below you and get as high as you want that way - Gravel and sand collapses if you remove the bottom block, so if you fall and die it's easy to remove your pillar after you respawn) http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1298329144 It means I can see my house for miles, though. http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1298329144 Tiny cabin I made last night that I built on my spawn point. http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1298329144 Inside. Multiple ovens mean that I can smelt iron faster! |
I did actually run across that thread, but annoyingly it doesn't really mention desktop Intel chips. Looking over it again, I guess I should be fine since my PC meets pretty much all the recommended requirements, but I'm still kind of unsure about my graphics chip.
Then again, I was planning on upgrading my GPU anyway, so it probably won't hurt to give it a try. |
If it's running on the Java installed in your web browser installed on your operating system, it should run on the Java installed on your operating system.
|
My house is going well. It's built into the corner of a glitchy square cliff, and has obsidian-walled lavalamps in each corner. But I can't figure out how to take screenshots - pressing printscreen pauses the game, and I get the menu.
Is there any other way I can get a screenshot? |
F2.
Also try F1 + F2. |
I got it on Saturday. Dicked around for the last few days basically building workbenches all over the place and dying. I finally decided to abandon my initital area, built a boat and crossed a largish amount of water. I found three mountains built around a beach-facing grass valley and built a home into the side of the centermost mountain. I mined up the mountain, building 3 stone shovels at a time and collecting a bunch of dirt and cobblestone. Eventually I climbed to the peak of the mountain, collected about 500 blocks of sand, and built a giant tower on it. I saved it for now, but I'm hoping to make it impossibly tall, add a few floors to prevent death from climbing it and then mine the ground beneath it so that it's just an enormous sand mansion on top of stone.
|
I built a floating mini-biome in the Nether. Thats about as creative as I get.
|
Okay, took the plunge and forked out my money for Minecraft. Thankfully it works, albeit with some occasional choppiness.
Spent my first day building a log cabin on a tiny island I found. I then proceeded to expand upwards, resulting in a giant sand staircase extending waaaay beyond the cabin roof. I think I like this game. |
Duh, everyone likes Minecraft. ;)
|
I tried it, it's awesome
The only flaw is in the controls.I never knew what to do in it O.o |

I just like blowing shit up, the red is all my Tnt. I've only spent about 3 hours on it so far. |
How do you get the isometric view of the map?
And here's a vid of the same hut I posted earlier, it's not as impressive as building a hut in the nether though: |
|
Thats awesome! I'm really glad they put that in
Also have you seen the new Light Effects? Its ruined the lighting for me :( |
Yeah, the bed function is incredibly useful - Shame you can't customise the bed colour yet, though.
The new lighting effects are awesome too - Although I get the feeling that daylight should be a lot brighter. You can turn off the new effects in the video settings if you don't like them. |

I haven't noticed a difference, but then I was using BetterLight to begin with. Because it's better.
|
Castle I've spent the past 3 evenings building, a WIP:
http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1298678666 http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1298678666 http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1298678822 http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1298678822 And those multiple ovens in my spawn hut really do make the process of cooking all that stone much faster. Will post a vid when I'm finally done. |
Thats pretty impressive.
|
Thanks - The outside and top floor rooms are done, I've now got to decorate and furnish the inside. :)
|
*fills up topic*
Prototype tower design for the second castle I'll be building (and I'm still working on the first one, heh). Stairs don't block light, apparently. |
Beds are incredibly useful. You can go to sleep before monsters spawn, so when I'm exploring for timber or clay or whatever I just whack it down when it starts to get dark.
As for the new lighting, I really like it. Landscapes viewed from a height especially look much better with it. Anyway... ghasts SUCK, man! They are the worst sons of bitches that I've ever fucking seen. I hate their fucking non-solid fucking guts, the pussies. They stopped my portal and then another one appeared and screwed with my fucking Nether when I went back. Goddamn. My house is just about finished (I want a gold-and-diamond tile floor, but that's going to take a while), and I'm slowly working on a big brick lighthouse. I need more clay, though - it's a bitch to find and get back with. I have a compass, now, though, so I should be good. My world was erased AGAIN recently, and this time I was unable to find my buildings again as has happened the previous four or five times. They may have been around somewhere, but I'd backed up earlier that day so I just reverted. I lost my safe area that I made in the Nether (and the ugly second portal, thankfully) but nothing else. So yeah. Make backups, guys! And also, now that there's no limit on slots, we should be able to share our worlds! I'll do some cool stuff with mine and see if I can add to my brother's computer - whacking in the ~/.minecraft/saves/ directory should work (or wherever your worlds are stored on your dodgy operating system). I'll upload it for you guys to have a look at if it goes smoothly. |

I don't think having walls made of gravel is at all structurally sound.
|
It'll be made of stone when it's done - Dirt and gravel are just a lot easier to get hold of when experimenting to see what fits where.
|
Fair enough. I think gravel looks absolutely disgusting and destroy it whenever I find it.
|
I find gravel to be incredibly, incredibly useful. Since it falls if there's nothing underneath it, it's easy to suffocate enemies and drop on lava (if no bucket of water is handy), and makes it ideal for use for the pillar-jumping trick since the pillar is easy to remove if you fall off it by accident. Plus mobs don't spawn on it, so it's good for laying mine cart track ontop of. And you get flint from it too. :P
Sand is just as useful and looks nicer but you don't really find it underground. |
It's finally finished! ... And that's one week of my life I'll never see again. This bloody game is far too addictive. Furnishing the place was a challenge since Minecraft doesn't have any furnishings except for boxes and bookshelves - Designs for the chairs, TV, and bedroom cabinets were inspired by other people's creations, so I can't take credit for them. I also had no idea what to put in the centre of the ground floor until today. All 4 corner towers are identical, just mirrored. And yes, that is a Commander Keen skin. Floor plans: http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1299373223 More WIPs attached if people really can be bothered to see them, and I made a greenhouse too: |
Can any one explain the main function of the game? I've seen it a lotta times, but didn't have the chance to experience it.
|
You mine stuff and craft stuff. It's very addictive despite the simple premise.
Just read some of the pages on the Wiki and you'll see why everyone loves it. |
I spent all day today on this game building my second house, it's just so addictive
|
Absolutely batshit raging now. I was working on covering an entire map in TNT and blowing it to hell but I accidentally set it off and stupidly I tried to correct what I done by pausing the game. So it's back to square one. Probably in about a week or two I'll have it covered and pics will be shown of the damage.
