Games before the PS1 were even harder. Some NES games are evil.

Each to their own. I personally can't stand very difficult games. I just don't enjoy them at all.

Nepsotic 10-01-2015 08:47 AM

That's because modern games are better.

Varrok 10-01-2015 09:11 AM

Like modern games that complete themselves without the need of be played

Nepsotic 10-01-2015 09:57 AM

Name single game that complete self without need of be played sir

Varrok 10-01-2015 10:00 AM

That new mario game with autoplay. Maybe it's not new anymore. There was some controversy with a Mario game when if you sucked too badly, the game would complete the hard path without you.

Also, it was an exaggeration. I mean that new games tend to be gosh-darn easy, which is not an exaggeration.

Nepsotic 10-01-2015 10:02 AM

P sure the focus is on building the levels with that one.

Varrok 10-01-2015 10:03 AM

I didn't mean Mario Maker, it was something from Wii era, I think.

God no. I go back to older games all the time because some of them are just flat out better. Most modern triple A games lack all creativity. Indie games on the other hand.

Admittedly it's getting better. It's coming to the point now triple A companies can't get away with releasing the same crap every year with broken PC ports on the side.

Anyway. Obviously I wasn't born in the 80s, but what I've heard is that some older games were hard because they making most of limited tech. So in order to keep someone playing it as long as possible, they made them stupidly hard.

I can't find anything to do with that. All I do know is that in Super Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros 2 and U. If you died 5 times in a row, it gave you a White Tanooki suit which made you invincible. Which is just. Ugh.

Varrok 10-01-2015 10:43 AM

That would be the next example I give

Nepsotic 10-01-2015 10:47 AM

It's like saying "music nowadays sucks, it was way better in the 80s". It's bullshit. You don't put any effort into finding and listening to the good music there is today and you filter out all the shit that was made in the 80s.

Games are better now than ever because the technology is more accessible. It doesn't matter what you say, you can do more now than ever before, and that's just how technology progresses. The whole "games were better in the 90s!" is just a mix of nostalgia and hipster.

Crashpunk 10-01-2015 11:04 AM

I'm not a music fanatic. But I can assure you. Tons of people would disagree with you about that one Nep.

I agree gaming as a whole is better and more accessible. But I honestly prefer playing games that I played when I was younger and old classics which I've never tried before. Very little peaks my interests, which is why I always go back and play older games.

Overall my experience is. New games look better, but not necessary play better or are as enjoyable to me. Saying that though. I hate to generalize anything. Some new games are brilliant whilst some older games which are considered classics aren't so great.

Varrok 10-01-2015 11:08 AM

And by "you can do more" you mean "you can do less", and that's true for modern FPSes. Great comparison is Duke Nukem 3D to any modern Call of Duty single player.

Most RPGs devolved to please more 'casual' players (I like to call those people "people who don't give a shit about games"), in gameplay, sometimes in story.

jRPGs? Well obviously Final Fantasy XIII is better than the older games because it's got more technology and stuff. What it misses is level design (it's got only corridors), story that makes sense, and gameplay that actually requires anything from you (it's a kind of auto mode)

Point'n'click games? Say what? We don't really have those anymore.

Remember having good platformer games, with relatively big budget, like Oddworld (or whatever it was called)? Nowadays we just have those shitty indie platformers, because no real company gives a shit.

They replaced the hexagon grid in Heroes 5, because 6 sides is definitely too hard to comprehend by modern gamer (who probably can't count to 6 very fast). Now it's in consumer-friendly square grid.

F2P games. P2W games. Game franchises leaning into F2P system, which they didn't use before. MGSV being released too early and cut because the CEO of the company realized he can make stupid amount of money by making stupid mobile F2P games for stupid people.

Heavy Metal reduced to what basically is either death metal or a hardcore genre
(downtuned, shitty guitars, easy riffs, vocals growled and/or screamed because it takes too much effort learning to sing). No more ambitious vocals like Dio or Iron Maiden. No more unique heavy metal albums like Ride to Lightning, Master of Puppets, Holy Diver, Painkiller, Rainbow Rising, The Ritual (by Testament) etc.

Rock music reduced to indie rock, because making more ambitious music is clearly overrated and expensive. Bye bye bands like Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd. We don't need you anymore.

Don't get me started on pop.

Fartstep.

We live in truly the best of times.

EDIT: Crash was faster. Stop being faster, what are you? Sonic the Hedgehog?

Nepsotic 10-01-2015 11:40 AM

So what you're saying is: You're a grumpy old fart who doesn't want to put any effort into finding things to enjoy because it was "better back in your day."
Don't talk shit, man. You know damn well that there are tonnes and tonnes of games released every year with fantastic level design and fantastic visuals, it's not a mutually exclusive thing, something you types can't seem to comprehend.

While I'm not massively into metal, I know you can find music like that if you just look. Also, a little protip: Music isn't necessarily bad just because you don't like it.

Point'n'click games? Say what?
Oh yeah we *coughallthewaydowncough* really *coughsepulchrecough* totally *coughtormentumcough* don't have any of those *coughdropsycough* point and *coughbrokenagecough* click games *coughtheterribleoldmancough* anymore *coughthecharnelhousetrilogycough* eh? *coughatticuscough*

Damn, I have a really bad cold.

Varrok 10-01-2015 11:53 AM

You're kidding with that Broken Age, don't you? The second act was very bad.

Also, that game was supposed to be a revival of point n click games. You can't revive something that's alive and breathing.

But say what, I am a rational human being and I try to treat everything fairly, so I'll give a shot to those games to see if they are as amazing as the classics are. I'm not biased, if they're are as good, I'll happily admit that. If I did that, I'll take that back about PnC games.

Nepsotic 10-01-2015 12:02 PM

So let me get this straight, you say:
"There's no point n click games anymore!"
To which I respond with a number of recent point n click games. Then you say "one of them wasn't very good, and it's was pointless because there are loads of point n click games around these days."

I don't get you, bro.

Varrok 10-01-2015 12:07 PM

I updated my post

Nepsotic 10-01-2015 12:08 PM

Not all of them are great, but Tormentum especially is fantastic.

I hope not. I fucking loathe Sonic the Hedgehog.

Nepsotic 10-01-2015 12:19 PM

His games suck.

Varrok 10-01-2015 01:59 PM

I can name a few good Sonic games.

And tones of bad Sonic games.

Isn't this Nate's job?

Job McYossie 10-01-2015 03:38 PM

Oddworld was once a game series with a strong bright future, then Microsoft got fucky with it and lorne was held back and corporations are bad blah blah blah

Talking about off topic stuff like how good sonic games are is more fun.

Anyway. Obviously I wasn't born in the 80s, but what I've heard is that some older games were hard because they making most of limited tech. So in order to keep someone playing it as long as possible, they made them stupidly hard.

Also because they were often based on arcade games, which had to kill you off occassionally so that you'd keep plugging coins in the slot.

Isn't this Nate's job?

I'm fine with people helping out when I'm not around.

That's false, the bats were cheap as fuck because a lot of the sections they were in were buggy as shit.

I never felt that they were buggy. I just didn't like the fact that when they get near to Abe without touching him, he still reacts and tries to shoo them away. I spent ages trying to get past the swinging stones before I realised that he wasn't losing health when crouched down.

Nepsotic 10-02-2015 03:21 AM

Oh are you talking about NnT? I was referring to AO and the phantom boulders

I distinctly remember fretting whenever I had to do that flintlock. Abe would just fall off the screen for no reason. I used to think that the spikes on the boulders somehow reached him on the platform, because the bat would be nowhere near him.

That is the only screen I can think of where I had that sort of unpredictable trouble though, everywhere else seemed flawless.
