Been watching the news lately. People have been buying up the assault rifles and other firearms because they're afraid guns are going to get outlawed all together. I never understood why people think they needed a weapon that is designed to kill in masses.

It almost seems like it's too late for gun control now. Even if we get assault rifles banned, the guns are already out there in the general populace. People will just buy and sell them illegally or stalk up before a ban takes affect.

The difference is that you can't show them off anymore. The moment someone sees you with one the police can actually do something.

Also, if guns get banned out right the American people would finally be able to use the guns for the one thing they were meant for; defending their rights. Fucking irony right there.

Someone started a housefire as bait for the emergency services in New York state, then gunned them down when they arrived.

Havoc 12-24-2012 06:02 PM

I heard about that. What the fuck.

I hate Piers Morgan as much as the next man, but the NRA and their lackeys are a danger to democracy.

I love how the BBC are reporting that as if 31,000 people is a big number in a country with a 300million population.

Any major law takes a long time to reach its effect. Guns have a usable life; in a generation or so the number of guns per person will drop down significantly.

And that'll happen even faster if the government institutes a buyback like they did in Australia.

Bullet Magnet 12-24-2012 07:01 PM

They can't deport Piers Morgan. We won't have him back.

Wings of Fire 12-24-2012 07:37 PM

Obligatory.

My opinion is that there needs to be better mental health in America. Honestly, I have no doubt there will be a lot more of these shootings [and some worse] in my lifetime.

STM 12-28-2012 01:26 PM

I think that's a universal problem on par only with human stupidity.

Wings of Fire 01-16-2013 07:34 AM

How, uh, convincing.

MeechMunchie 01-16-2013 07:51 AM

If the NRA was the NFPA, America would be on fire constantly.

mr.odd 01-16-2013 08:39 AM

That's stupid. We have put armed guards in schools before. You know what happened? They got shot and killed.

Bullet Magnet 01-16-2013 10:52 AM

Obama's new plan to eliminate the opposition is to make the right's heads explode with completely sensible gun violence prevention proposals. If you live with any conservatives or libertarians, invest in an umbrella. Also Scotch Guard.

DarkHoodness 01-16-2013 12:56 PM

"But he'll take away our guns! It goes against the second amendment! We can't have that!"

I'll be very surprised if this is successful - Or if it'll actually do anything if it isn't blocked to hell and actually gets through.

Havoc 01-16-2013 01:45 PM

A ban on semi-auto rifles has been in effect before thanks to Clinton and was effectively turned back by Bush Jr. So it's not impossible.

The right to bear arms does not mean that regular citizens should be able to have any kind of weapon. There are plenty more banned weapons that citizens can not have despite the 2nd amendment.

I think the plans Obama proposes are a step in the right direction, if not the situation gun possession should be in. Better monitoring when buying guns, better tracking of mentally sick people so they can not acquire guns as easily and a full ban on semi-auto rifles.

It won't prevent shootings, even banning weapons all together won't prevent shootings. But it's a step in the right direction when it comes to making people realize that certain weapons shouldn't be sold as easy as a car.

Now these political bastichs say us gamers have no credibility in the argument that games do not cause violence: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/01/...9c51f151000018

They are worse than the Glukkons!

Seems like someone's been naughty this year
why can't I resist making awful inappropriate jokes?!

Bullet Magnet 01-25-2013 04:28 PM

I could tell you their names if it would make you feel worse about that.

Slog Bait 01-31-2013 08:31 PM

I don't really have much to say on the matter, but this has been THE BIG THING on the news since it happened. And also it's relevant to this thread so yeah.

Apparently the shooter was in some kind of lawsuit with two of the people shot and the third person was some lady taking pictures who got shot in the hand. At first she thought she got hit with glass that had shattered nearby but that wasn't the case. They focused an awful lot on her hand.

As far as I know they're still looking for the shooter.

Really though, of course this shit is going to happen, especially in Arizona, where you can legally own a gun without having it registered. No background checks no nothing. Just gotta be 18+ and you can walk into pretty much any store here and just buy one.

MeechMunchie 02-06-2013 01:20 PM

Guns don't kill people. People with guns kill people.

Person + Gun = Person with gun. Removing the gun from society is less ethically problematic than removing the person.

I thought of that this morning and it sounded snappier in my head.

Slog Bait 02-06-2013 02:02 PM

But if we get rid of the people, there will be no one left to make the guns.

SOUNDS MORE PRODUCTIVE TO ME

Manco 02-07-2013 09:35 AM

Drop a bomb on them and remove both.

There, I've just solved every possible problem.

Bullet Magnet 02-07-2013 09:50 AM

I reserve the right to bear nuclear arms.

STM 02-07-2013 11:17 AM

Let's just start ignoring America from now on. Just like we do to Africa.

Slog Bait 02-07-2013 01:59 PM

I don't think you understand how hard it is to ignore the place you live in.

Also even if you try to ignore the States it's like that really obnoxious child that always needs to be the center of attention. You ignore it and it starts doing jumping jacks in your dinner while firing every gun it owns.

Varrok 02-07-2013 02:01 PM

No, it's actually pretty easy.
