I know it works on Windows 98 Second Edition. There's an unofficial program for it which allows you to run programs built for 2000/XP. It's called KernelEx and it is here. If it doesn't work first time, try changing the compatibility settings tab that added. Also, KernelEx works for ME but not 95. 2000 I think can run it anyway.

I'd recommend downloading the unofficial service pack for 98SE as well, this one doesn't work on ME though, here it is.

Stop it now it's not funny.

Since Minecraft is made in Java, I tought it would run on anything as long as it has the JRE/JVM and meets the system requirements.

I thought I could just get an old version of the JRE/JVM and install it on an old Windows machine and Minecraft will run nicely.

There are different versions of the JRE and VM, though. Minecraft might use function calls that don't exist in the older versions, and you might not be able to obtain the older versions for previous editions of Windows.

Exactly why you need KernelEx, it adds some stuff from 2000 and XP that newer programs use onto Windows 98 SE and Windows ME. I believe the newest Java will run once you install KernelEx. Just have to fiddle around with the settings a bit if it doesn't work straight away.

Super Mario Kart (SNES) came in the post! awesome game, I'm not used to the controls yet but i can see it being really fun 2 player.

I've also ordered Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time (N64) (Fully box with all manuals and game), Super Mario World and I'm bidding for a fully boxed LoZ: Majora's Mask.

Phylum 04-02-2012 01:46 AM

You're not going to open it, I hope!

How much are the boxed ones? I've got 10 boxed Atari Jaguar games in their shrink rap still. :p Some of them I want to play but I don't really want to open them.

AlexFili 04-02-2012 04:47 AM

Still got my old Megadrive and N64. Bought Goldeneye and Rage Wars for it about a year ago. Not got my original NES but got a Famiclone and a few Japanese games (score!). Also got a Japanese Abe's Oddysee for the PSX. Definitely got the urge to play Magic Carpet on my PC again. That game rocked.

At least £10 for a boxed N64 game, Even more for NES/SNES and any other 8/16-bit game. You might be lucky on eBay though, but it actually better to look in game stores that sell retro games. And I'm not bothered about sealed games, I really don't want any. I saw a sealed Legend of Zelda (NES) go for £300. Madness.

Also I've just won bids for a Gameboy Camera, Super Mario Land and A Super Gameboy player for the SNES. I should really have a break from eBay but that were so cheap I couldn't help my self

I'm trying to get Windows ME (beta) to work in Oracle VirtualBox. Unfortunately, I can only run it in 16-bit colors and 640x480 resolution.

How do I fix this?

I don't think you can. It's an issue with all DOS operating systems being run in VirtualBox. Better off with Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 because that doesn't seem to have any limitations. Microsoft Virtual PC 2010 is really slow though just use 2007.

Lucky, mind you I got that Compaq Presario laptop for £15 in the box with the original manuals, and it had been upgraded to Windows 2000.

Dynamithix 04-07-2012 05:40 AM

I found Abe's Oddysee, Dune 2000, Civilization III and Pandemonium all in their original big boxes for the PC today, all in great condition and almost everything included in 'em (AO is missing something I believe...) from a used games store that I go to once in a while. So that's pretty retro. Yay.

I have the AO PC box and manual. Although not the absolute originals, sort of like a 2000-ish reselling of the game called "Replay". Only time I've ever heard of it. Thinking about buying Gran Turismo 2 for 20p, funny how you can buy b rand new copy of it... I guess they're still making it from it's original 1999 release.

Also I dug around in my attic to see if there was any forgotten old stuff in there and it turned out there was this laptop I used to use years ago. The bottom says it's a Fujitsu Lifebook 530T and has a Windows 95 sticker on it. Unfortunately I couldn't find a charger that fit it, only the multiple tip car adapter fits it and that's not really that helpful right now. So because of this I don't know any of the specs on it as there is no site that actually documents the laptops stuff.

The shell is an old black colour and feels rough just like any old laptop, major benefit is it doesn't suck fingerprints off from a mile away and is easy to remove dust from.

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1333808105
The keyboard is great, better than the flat keys you get on today's laptops. Also, very loud and clicky, the mouse buttons are as well. You may notice the laptop has a manual brightness slider which is cool.

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1333808105
Finally, out of all the ports on this thing, I have no idea what this is. I've not seen it on anything else before and it has an icon which looks like a lego minifigure's 'hands'. Strange.

When I find a charger for it I definately want to find out what was on this laptop, if it even still works that is. Nothing on it is broken that I can see..

EDIT: I managed to turn it on in the car since I went out yesterday! It turns out the specs are pretty good but there were some downsides to it's age and upgrades.
Seems to have a 4GB standard IDE hard drive (3.97GB exact).
48MB of RAM which I assume is upgradable since it uses a common RAM type.
Battery holds no charge whatsoever however oddly enough the internal clock battery still works. Figure that out.
CD Drive seems to have a faulty driver so I'll be using an external one that connects via PCMCIA for the time being.
Infrared still works.
Still haven't found out what that strange port is.
Has Windows 98 Second Edition which would make sense being that I have a CD for it still and the RAM is good enough.
The lights on that grey-ish strip seem to be the hard drive, battery etc lights. Aren't backlight at all, think of an old Gameboy display but with computery symbols.
Microsoft Office 2000 is installed!
Insaniquarium Deluxe is on there!
Some game called Pacific Poker is installed, no idea what it is, I didn't have time to look.
Unfortunately the mousepad seems to be dying, a shame but still works (slightly).

I have aroud 70 games for the original xbox. They were so cheap!

Crashpunk 04-18-2012 09:07 AM

I never had a Xbox but the only Xbox games I was ever interested in were the Oddworld games and Halo. Any other game I liked was on the Playstation 2 and I had one of those. :)

I found out how to fix the display problem with old Windows OSs. You need to download this http://bearwindows.boot-land.net/vbe9x.htm

Sweet! Does this mean it now works full screen or desktop mode?

IDK. I use scale mode and maximize the window.

I'll have to try it. NT based Windows systems like XP and 2000 work in 'seamless' mode and automatically change to your resolution in full screen in virtual box. Neither of them work on MS-DOS based Windows systems in my experience. I usually use Virtual PC for them because it works properly. I don't tend to bother much with it now however since I have 3 Windows 98 Second Edition laptops.

I made a video of the Libretto, better than VirtualBox because it is real and is extremely portable.

Crashpunk 04-21-2012 11:11 AM

Okay. I decided to take a photo of my gaming collection as of now. (It's going to take a while to put this all away...)

http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/2696/p1010592o.jpg

I'm currently looking for in the future a Dreamcast, Saturn, Xbox and a Atari 5200 and 2600. At the moment I'm saving up my money so I'm not buying anything else.

Varrok 04-21-2012 12:02 PM

You don't have many games, compared to number of consoles...

...wtf you've imprisoned Wario in your drawer? Set him free!

Crashpunk 04-21-2012 12:07 PM

What? I have way more games then consoles. I only have 13 consoles, (My Wii, DS, DSi, 3DS and PS2 aren't shown).

Also Wario was in the draw just to show him off. Wa-haa!

Varrok 04-21-2012 12:19 PM

About 60 games divided by 11 consoles visible on the photo gives about 6 games per console - Is it many? :D

Crashpunk 04-21-2012 12:30 PM

Okay granted I don't have a massive collection of games but overall it's still a collection. I do also need to add that I started collecting retro suff last year and I've only just joined eBay. The fact that the games I have are all in great condition (I mean look I have boxed N64 games including Zelda) I'm more happy that my consoles are in amazing condition.

RoryF 05-14-2012 07:53 AM

It must now be known. I own what might be one of the hardest to find remaining bits of hardware from the Microsoft Exposition showcase (the little program advertising Microsoft products). I HAVE THE MICROSOFT HOME MOUSE SERIAL EDITION!

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1337010424
Not my picture but whatever, my camera ran out of battery.

OH YEAH!
