Hey he negrepped me first just because I hate cartoons trying to be cool. You want cool cartoons...go watch Lion King I! BIATCHES, sometimes I just wanna rage quit you guys!

It's hilarious because The Lion King is plagiarism of an old anime called Kimba the White Lion.

Bullet Magnet 12-09-2010 02:53 PM

Do we have an Animé variant of Godwin's Law on this forum?

Wings of Fire 12-09-2010 03:00 PM

It's called 'Lets get a rise out of WoF' and results vary depending on the intelligence of the user.

OANST 12-09-2010 03:02 PM

It's pretty effective.

MeechMunchie 12-09-2010 03:10 PM

It's super effective!

I wish Josh was here to hear me say that.

STM 12-09-2010 03:59 PM

No Wings it can't be....everything I know and love is a lie!

Back on topic (sort of)

Most philosophy is (sorry to be so bland) pointless. Take the Ship of Theseus for example. Who gives a shit when Theseus' boat stopped being Theseus' boat. Does it really matter?

ziggy 12-10-2010 07:39 PM

maybe not. What if all of your body parts, were replaced by better working, superior body parts, would you still be you? Or a Frankenyou?

your attempt to find practical advantage in such a philosophical gedankenexperiment is pointless.

@ ziggy
I post this clip again as it perfectly fits this point of discussion. and this time people, concentrate on the subject and don't argue about whether you like the medium or not. because that's just boring.

No, I would be dead because a vast majority of body parts cannot successfully transplanted.

But in theory your body (or anything for that matter) is constantly changing anyway. Your cellular (or even atomic) make up now is slightly different to how it was thirty seconds ago.

This applies to (practically) anything. Theseus' boat (in theory) was probably slowly rotting anyway.

I read "Super dyke".

Fuck.

Most books/music/video games/movies are (sorry to be so bland) pointless. Take 2001: A Space Odyssey for example. Who gives a shit when HAL 9000 stopped being helpful and tried to kill Dave. Does it really matter?

To answer: no it doesn't "really matter", but philosophy and thought experiments are an interesting brain exercise that give you a chance to work on your logical thinking skills, while at the same time can be pretty interesting to think about and discuss.

Let's say that Jim has a car, and he allows you to make upgrades to it. Eventually, you switch out every piece to make it superior, including the body and the engine. Is it still Jim's car, or is it now yours since you bought all of the parts?

I know that isn't actually what the thought exercise is about, but I'm trying to make it relevant to MoxCo.

Bullet Magnet 12-11-2010 10:39 AM

It's funny how almost all relevant applications turn out to be legal issues. Particularly ownership.

Theseus' boat is really just an exercise of human's identifying and naming objects.

What about Jim's car makes it Jim's car? If I remove the muffler from Jim's car because I think it sounds better is it still Jim's car?

As of yesterday the muffler was an attribute and component of the car that I coined as Jim's yesterday.

And we could get even more particular. If scratch a centimetre of paint of Jim's car it's now different to the car that I previously identified as Jim's. and we could get even more specific until we get down to the molecular structure of the car which is of course constantly changing.

But to your original question, if I replace absolutely everything is it still the same car? No, of course not. It retains noting from its original composition.

Man philosophical debates are dumb and pointless

*joins in the debate*

STM 12-12-2010 04:31 AM

So is your trivial existence but we don't tell you that in the open either. That's not joining in mate, that's just adding your personal thoughts on something without adding to the current debate. HA! =)

The argument doesn't really work with humans because your perceptions of 'You' are stored in your brain. If your brain was replaced, the brain would think it was itself, not you.

Please do tell how I can add my personal opinion to a debate without being considered part of it.

...On second thought, don't make another post. Please.

It would be ok just as long as it wasn't an abnormal brain right?

The cells of which, though rarely if ever replaced, replace the components they are made of simply for maintenance. Almost every atom in your body is replaced in less than a decade, they are shed, pissed and exhaled away.

ziggy 12-12-2010 09:16 PM

I know that wouldn't really work for a human. I was actually not being serious, as crazy as that is. People can't get organ transplants without requiring medication every day in order to live (especially if it's a heart) because their body will reject it as a foreign object.

ziggy 12-12-2010 09:40 PM

Also I believe we all exist because God created us all with free will.

moxco 12-13-2010 12:43 AM

I believe we exist because long beneath the see there were amino acids which formed protein this protein then became the first cell. This cell split and the resultant cells evolved and now we have all the organisms we see today.

But seriously if you want a religion argument go over to the WikiLeaks thread ad backup STM.

ziggy 12-13-2010 12:51 AM

I actually agree with you. I think we came about through evolution. The creation of Adam, and Eve from his rib, is just stupid. So is every other story from organized religion. My family is Catholic, but I am not religious at all. But....I believe that a God does exist.

Can you elaborate on this? If you have no religion, then why believe in God? It seems self-made and rather pointless to me. So enlighten me X_x Im curious.
What's your definition of God.

Phylum 12-13-2010 03:25 AM

I feel the same way as Ziggy: I don't have a religion, but I believe there is a god.

I don't think anything could have started without a god. Trying to rationalise creation is so far beyond my understanding that it's what I've come to believe. I don't follow a religion, though. I have little knowledge of religions, so I don't know if there's a religion that's right for me.

I also lack belief in the afterlife. I would imagine that there would be many, many people that would just mope about what they didn't do with their lives, rendering the whole thing more of a hell. Some people may enjoy it given that certain people were also there, but I can't imagine anything being worthwhile in an eternal afterlife.

What's your definition of God.

At a guess I'm going for omnipotent, omniscient and omnibenelovent.

That's my working scientific hypothesis of God.
