They give the game publicity and feedback of some sorts, and they get a good amount of viewers, part of whom might even donate money for their efforts. So yeah, symbiosis might be the word for it.

I feel a thread-split coming up soon.

Havoc 11-22-2011 03:28 AM

I think that many people who play Minecraft today first saw it on Youtube, be it with the Yogscast or some other Minecraft series (I heard of it because of that Xcave dude). Minecraft on their own, without any help from Youtube, wouldn't have half the amount of players.

They got big of each other, but I feel it started out at Yogscast and their Let's Play video.

T-nex 11-22-2011 03:43 AM

nah... I think people talked about it before too.

Also, Yogscast is replaceable. Honestly, EVERYTHING in this world becomes popular from mouth-to-mouth and ads. But ads only get you so far. You need people you trust to tell you that a product is good. Yogscast did this. But so did OMFGcata and many others. I mean.. I bought Minecraft cos of OMFGcata. The only difference is that Yogscast got to be the most popular of those channels in regards to Minecraft vids. Apparently they were the ones providing the best or at least the most focused content. I also think their timing was right. They hit Minecraft when a lot of people knew of it, but also a lot of people to come. Who hadn't but would. And the fact that they focused on Minecraft so much, and they were actually funny, people loved them.

But the thing is... Had it not been them, it would be someone else. Or maybe they created some chain reaction, but by now, they ARE replaceable. All games need people like them to review the games and show them off. When you see a person having fun with a given item, you start wanting it as well. So youtubers are GREAT advertisement.

But that's just youtubers in general.

But it's undeniable that Notch created a great game, that's really fun. And fun things spread around naturally. It's inevitable that Minecraft would at least have a decent fanbase. It's not youtube that made the games fun for me at least. They just helped me with the initial desire to get it.

And I dunno if this should be split. It IS general minecraft discussion after all ... x_x But if you guys really want to...

Wil 11-22-2011 05:30 AM

The mods and LPs are a huge part of the Minecraft community. I see no need for a split.

dripik 11-22-2011 06:08 AM

Certainly. But it was mainly the 'Mojang vs Yogscast' case that has been going on for a while, and I was concerned.

On topic, have you guys noticed that SSP makes the new XP-collecting sound right, but it is the normal "picking something up" sound in SMP?

T-nex 11-22-2011 06:16 AM

But Dripik.... Mojang vs Yogscast IS on topic x_x It's a minecraft discussion, and you cant really say there was that much of a discussion before that anyway. Just short bursts of thoughts on minecraft stuff. I don't think the debate will take over anyway. Ive already said all I wanted to say.

Anyway, i REALLY miss the old chests... You could use em as counter and cupboards in the kitchen and all :(

Crashpunk 11-22-2011 07:02 AM

What confused me is why are the chests smaller? They could of been the same size but still opened up.

:

Just heard from Simon and Lewis, they got back to Gatwick airport and were met by a crazed Notch supporter who repeatedly insulted them, IRL
Lol.

STM 11-22-2011 07:29 AM

This is hardly fair, I imagine even Notch himself isn't as worked up about this as so many fanboys and fangirls are. The fact is in his interview with them he personally made an 'I fucked you mum' joke, which was laughed off, he also talks about how funny wanking is. So I don't think he can be very pissed off with them saying fuck twice or thrice or how ever many times it was.

Cor.

Wil 11-22-2011 07:43 AM

The children who sat on the Yogscast panel and went to the Yogscast signing were Yogscast fans - they knew what to expect. The swearing can only be a matter of personal taste - whether you think swearing in a given setting is appropriate or not.

It seems to be more about how the Yogscast behaved as 'divas'. There are conflicting reports from loads of people who were there. I'm betting it was mostly misunderstanding Lewis's and Simon's style and humour.

MeechMunchie 11-22-2011 07:45 AM

They tend to act like smug ponces in the name of comedy for their videos, it wouldn't surprise me if they did it in real life as well.

For me, the X Cave videos pretty much introduced me to it. Then I started watching the paulsoaresjr videos such as Man VS Minecraft (you should check it out if you haven't already) and Minecraft Dad. I think it's a mutual thing. Minecraft became popular partly because of youtube but also word of mouth and screenshots.

For anyone who'd like to check out some texture packs, I recommend DokuCraft and the DefScape high definition packs which are really cool and work with 1.0.0! The DefScape pack supports random monster patch (so you can have cows/creepers/pigs that have different skins!)

Just look at how awful the yogs are

STM 11-22-2011 02:05 PM

Wow, they're being right cunts!

<3 Yogscast.

Crashpunk 11-22-2011 11:07 PM

I support the Yogscast, I do actually believe this was just a misunderstanding of "British Humour"

I was introduced to the Yogscast by a friend (It was Scott, You remember him right Wil?) The lastest episode was the one where they just found the temple in there world and they had about 4,000 Subscribers. I've been following the series ever since.

Oh yeah I borght Minecraft because of the Yogscast. (okay and Seananners)

Phylum 11-22-2011 11:17 PM

And is that a reason to support them if they're wrong?

I wish everyone would just shut the fuck up about this. We don't know what happened. There have been mixed reports of events and I doubt the truth will ever be known.

Wil 11-23-2011 12:51 AM

Sure I remember, Scott. I troll him on Formspring from time to time. I was introduced to the Yogscast on the Oddworld Forums, probably a lot earlier in this very thread.

Crashpunk 11-24-2011 01:08 AM

Just to end the debate between Yogscast and Notch, here's the Yogscast responce (Finally)

:

We’re sure many of you have seen or heard about Notch’s post-Minecon tweets, which were not what we expected to see when we got off the plane from Minecon – we’ve had a sleep now and recovered a bit, so this is our response:

We are very disappointed by these tweets from someone we admire and respect. We can understand that it was the morning after the deadmau5 party and Notch was very tired, but we are still fairly upset. The quotes and actions that Notch attributed to us were not said by us or published anywhere by us. Therefore we are surprised and confused about where this stuff has come from - especially since the only time we spoke to Notch was at the interview.

Regarding dropping f-bombs at the show - we apologise for this, but had rehearsed the whole show in front of the organisers and half of Mojang and they had approved it. We were given no guidelines or oversight in the weeks leading up to Minecon and there were ample opportunities at the rehearsal for Mojang to inform us of problems, such as being careful about swearing, which is pretty common in our youtube videos.

Out of all the tweets that Notch sent out, most hurtful was the accusation that we told a kid to “fuck off” and crossed out another signature – which is something we would never ever do.

We loved spending time with fans and were overwhelmed by how many people were there to support us and give us gifts. Simon has enough Jaffas to last him until the middle of 2012. The problem was that Minecon is a new show and organisation was pretty bad, and when we came to the scheduled signing sessions, nothing had been set up for us and we had to scrabble around to fetch tables, ropes and pens ourselves. With some younger kids around, it was our priority to make sure everything was safe, as we have seen injuries in the past.

This lack of organization contributed to long and confused lines and we were heartbroken to have to turn away so many people when we ran out of time. Simon can only handle a certain amount of time between cups of coffee and nicotine tablets before collapsing, but we made a real effort to get out there and managed to do about six hours of signing. Although we were frustrated, we would never have treated fans in the way that Notch suggested we did.

We were also unhappy and surprised that a week before Minecon, Mojang informed us that they had sold the rights to livestream our show and content to IGN – they hadn’t asked us, they hadn’t spoken to us – they just sold it. Because of this, we nearly cancelled the trip, but decided to say “balls to it” and come anyway, because we felt we owed it to the fans. Hannah actually spoke with IGN directly earlier, and they agreed to take their video down and let us put the videos up on our channel, so a big thanks to them for that.

We were not paid, and never demanded to be paid. We asked for some support, and Mojang said they could offer us two hotel rooms for the duration of the stay and a small boardroom to rest in. We spent a huge amount of money on flights, rooms, food and equipment for the 10 people that we brought along to support us, act as security, make videos/posts and generally help out. We also gave away 100 special t-shirts for free.

The reason we came to Minecon is because we wanted to thank you guys and meet the community that we love and are a part of. We couldn’t have gotten to where we are now without you guys, and so we decided to eat the costs of attending and just have fun. This is why we spent our panel giving a voice to loads of talented people that couldn’t attend but have made Minecraft what it is today.

We’re not gonna stop making videos, not going to stop loving you guys, and hopefully we’ll see you at more gaming conventions in the future.

Lewis & Simon & Hannah

EDIT: Video linking to this post http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HddMANh3Xis see, it is really me after all. Hi mother!

AlexFili 11-24-2011 01:48 AM

It seems like all this is another case of miscommunication. Let's hope Notch keeps things less public in future. That was embarrassing for him.

Crashpunk 11-24-2011 07:08 AM

He was tired and/or drunk after the Deadmou5 gig.

Anyway, You might of heard but Valve have given Notch an exclusive, One of a Kind All-Class TF2 Hat called 'Top Notch'
http://wiki.teamfortress.com/w/image..._Top_Notch.png
I first though Minecraft was coming to Steam and this was a Promo. Turns out it wasn't.
I guess if they did make a promo, It would be a Steve Head.

Wil 11-24-2011 07:11 AM

Look at how angry that Notch head is. He's probably thinking about the Yogscast and how he wants to kill them all.

T-nex 11-24-2011 07:29 AM

Omigawd so much draamaa!! But this isnt entertaining like drama usually is... Its just sad :(

Splat 11-24-2011 11:16 AM

I'm really impressed that they didn't have a go back at Notch; they could have been all persecuted and angry and thrown stuff back at him, and I bet when they first heard what he'd been saying about them, that was exactly what they felt like doing.

I guess with the poor organisation of the event there was a lot of confusion and stress, and rumours can escalate a lot. I'm quite surprised to hear that they only met Notch on stage; regardless of all else, it's a shame he didn't make more of an effort to meet them before condemning them for not giving more time to their fans.

I first heard about Minecraft through the Yogscast, but I wouldn't say they were the soul reason I bought it, though they showed me the potential of the game and their videos were what made me finally make up my mind. But the OWF server, a chance to get to know my friends on OWF better, was another of my biggest influences.

Destro 11-24-2011 07:34 PM

Phylum 11-25-2011 02:24 AM

I've spent the last 40 minutes trying to run a texture pack I've been working on. No matter how many times I zip, unzip, edit, redraw, compress, uncompress or throw my computer it will not work. I'm using Photoshop CS3 for the image editing and the default Mac Archive Utility to compress it. I have heard no reports of either of these programs causing problems with textures, so I can't see why it isn't working.

I've uploaded the file and I'd appreciate if someone could look at it and tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Scraby 11-25-2011 03:12 AM

i fixed it,you packed it wrong, you pack all of the files directly not in a folder by the same name

Phylum 11-25-2011 03:16 AM

Oh. Thanks. My Mac wasn't showing me that. I should have realised that's how it was archiving it.

Scraby 11-25-2011 03:20 AM

no probs m8 anytime :) i worked once with the texture packs but never finished them :/

Crashpunk 11-25-2011 11:24 AM

Well i've started the very nerdy, very obsessive task to recreate the Yogcave on the forums server.
