Her voice is, though.

Nope. They changed it to a more generic computer voice.

Vyrien 07-11-2013 07:21 PM

It's still McLain, they apparently just reduced the mocking tone present in GLaDOS' voice, the bastards.

Strike Witch 07-11-2013 10:26 PM

Well whatever it is it sounds totally different.

OANST 07-12-2013 06:47 AM

It sounds totally different when systems operate normally. It's identical to the GlaDos voice when Jaegers get damaged.

Strike Witch 07-12-2013 07:16 AM

I must have missed that. Though, a lot was happening so it's not surprising.

OANST 07-12-2013 07:45 AM

The music overpowered dialogue a lot in this movie. Especially the computer's voice. That would be the only complaint that I have. I really, really liked it.

Caught the second half of a documentary about the guys who caught the first-ever video of a giant squid in its natural habitat six months ago. Pretty cool stuff, I wasn't expecting it to be gold. It's got a sort of mother-of-pearl irredescence, like the inside of a seashell. But then, if all you found were dead butterflies, you'd think butterflies were all grey.

That's really cool.

Have you seen the documentary in which a bunch of scientists perform an autopsy on a giant squid? It's revolting, but very interesting.

MeechMunchie 07-14-2013 09:36 AM

Yes. So have you.

Things I've watched recently:

Beautiful Creatures - Pretty good film, reminds me of True Blood mixed with a bit of witchery. Does a good job of not being too cheesy. Decent special effects
Battleship - I was reluctant to give this a go but it was better than I thought it would be. Impressive visuals and some pretty cool moments.
Man of Steel - Fantastic origin story and a brilliant way of reinventing Superman. I loved the fight scenes and the great plot points.
Dexter Series 6 - Just finished watching it, such an awesome cliffhanger. Moving onto S7 now.

You just wait... I won't spoil anything but holy fucking shit. Dexter always has the best cliffhangers. 7 is quite a slow season, but it really picks up in the second half. I'm waiting for the new season 8 episode to be uploaded, which will probably be tomorrow.

Wings of Fire 07-17-2013 11:48 AM

I finally watched The Incredibles after managing to avoid it for ten years.

It was pretty great, My favourite character was Violet, go figure.

Mr. Bungle 07-17-2013 01:57 PM

I love The Incredibles. One of my favourite Pixar films for sure. It's just such a blast to watch.

I think a sequel would be nice but I'm not sure if they would be able to pull it ff successfully. Speaking of which, has anyone seen Monster's University?

Vyrien 07-17-2013 05:09 PM

I just watched all four volumes of the original Batman: The Animated Series. I forgot how amazing a cartoon it is.

Yes. It was good. Not as good as the first one, but definitely worth watching.

Wings of Fire 07-19-2013 03:33 PM

I've been watching Fullmetal Alchemist which, like Cowboy Bebop, doesn't really count as anime anymore.

It's difficult for me to judge considering I'm also reading the vastly superior source material. The new original stuff has its benefits, but I can't help find some of the changes unnecessary and grating, and wonder why this is such a universally beloved series.

It's been getting better though, so hopefully I'll be able to recognize its quality once it stops playing footsie with source material and really goes off as its own thing.

Nepsotic 07-19-2013 04:51 PM

I've been thinking about trying out anime. I've had no prior experience with it besides Fist of the North Star, so what would you recommend I watch first?

Right. Obviously I'd have to recommend Fullmetal Alchemist. I have my problems with it, but it's the definitive gateway series and a multi-award winning one at that for a reason. Nice humane adventure story with a very well developed world.

*Disclaimer, these next recommendations are taken from a site I'm a premium member of, thus I can't be sure which ones will and won't work for you. Also they're all legally available in the UK from this source.*

Gintama is considered THE pinnacle of comedy anime. It has a very unique, and disarmingly well developed setting, well cut characters and an almost acerbic fast wit that cracks through you and makes you laugh all the way through.

Shin Sekai Yori is my favourite show of last year. Based on an award winning series of novels, it's science fiction about five children a thousand years after the destruction of human civilization and their attempts to learn and come to terms with humanity's dark past.

Fate/Zero is an urban fantasy story of heroism and sacrifice. A prequel to the beloved VN Fate/Stay Night (Reading/watching that isn't necessary). It has a developed mythology, a strong cast of male characters and beautiful art and music.

Zetsuan no Tempest is a pretty fucking gay adventure series which runs madly off Shakespearean theatrics and time travel drama. I went in with low expectations and left with lots of praise. The main cast are four of the most well defined characters I've seen in any media and the director really knows how to do good melodrama.

HunterxHunter is the epic and endlessly imaginative series that Naruto and Bleach really wanted to be. I erred on the side of caution with it for nearly two years, but finally relented and caught up in just under a week. There really isn't enough good things I can say about this series. It has so much energy and love in it, it's so bright and extravagantly inspired. The only bad thing I can say about ist is the week long wait for the next episode is an increasingly torturous lesson in suffering.

Saki is a big gay all female sports show. It's much better than it has any right to be, with a large cast of characters you can't help but fall in love with. You like ponies so I can't imagine you not liking this.

Strike Witch 07-19-2013 06:33 PM

Joe's lying, they're all dirty fanservice pedobait shows

Varrok 07-19-2013 11:30 PM

I don't think it'll stop Nepsotic anyway.

@WoF About FMA: Maybe try FMA: Brotherhood after you finished watching the first anime? The second one is supposed to be that 'closer to manga' one. And in the end they're completely different in terms of story.

Thanks, I'll just go down the list seeing as you say they're all good.

Saw World War Z and Pacific Rim.

As much as I love zombies, Pacific Rim was a clear winner here.

MA 07-23-2013 10:02 AM

watched Tyrannosaur, directed by Paddy Considine. if you like him watch Dead Man's Shoes, one of my favourite films although i think it got mixed reviews. both are pretty depressing though.

Tyrannosaur i liked, i could relate on different levels. the main character i suppose many would dislike, but it shows beautifully what happens when rage dominates your life. guilt is a punishment that never goes away, it seems. some scenes are hard to watch but if it's your thing i'd give it a look.

EDIT: also it's Peter Mullan. fucking great actor.

No, seriously, they actually are very good. The characters are really in-depth and the writing is excellent, along with the humor which is fantastic.

Nepsotic 07-23-2013 12:31 PM

The acting is top notch and the humor is increasingly witty and intelligent.
I can't decide which one is better.
