Could it be possible that, while checking the integrity of the game's files the AE files are damaged and steam recognizes them as being good?

MeechMunchie, have you tried booting up the game, killing all the rundll32.dll processes and launching the game again, just in case?

Manco 01-18-2011 08:57 AM

Just thought I'd put the details of the upcoming SW patch here:
:

Update January 18th 2010
Just has a general update to All...

Fixed:
1. We have fixed the nvidia issue in first person mode.
2. Increased performance.
3. Moved Save games out of "Program Files".
4. Native resolutions available to the player will be made available (IE what can your card do)
5. Removing the joypad auto-detect from the game itself, and allowing players to chose which control system via the launcher.
6. Fully customisable controls.
7. Native widescreen support.
8. Fixed 5.1 audio init.
9. Fixed broken achievements.

Being finalised.
Random bug fixes.

ATI chipsets, with the latest drivers from ATI there are graphic "issues" such as black lines, and sorting problems. ATI have managed to recreate these issues and are looking at the root cause. Currently it is LIKELY that these issues are with ATI and not Stranger's Wrath.

HOWEVER they are looking to see if there's anything we can do to help them with this but currently the issues lay with ATI's OpenGL drivers.
(via Steam Forums)

EDIT: Good news!
:

Yay sent off :)

Possible but very unlikely. Hash functions are designed so that small changes to a file will result in clear error results.

If you're still worried that the files are corrupt, simply delete your files and download them again.

Manco 01-19-2011 10:53 AM

The Stranger's Wrath patch should be available once Valve has processed it.

Note that there are still problems caused by ATI OpenGL drivers: http://www.oddworld.com/?p=376
:

All’ya

We wanted to share some news with you. We’ve submitted the current Patch for Stranger’s Wrath PC for release, and now we have to wait for some last minute tests before it goes live with you the public; when the patch goes live we will publish the full change list.

In the meantime, a lot of the visual problems with the title have affected ATI Graphics cards almost exclusively. We have been working closely with the guys at AMD/ATI since the start of the year. This work is still ongoing however we are currently at the hands of the team at AMD.

We have jointly prepared a statement to this affect…

“AMD and Oddworld Inhabitants, Inc. are aware of the problems which are seen on ATI graphics cards with the OpenGL drivers and are working hard to resolve the problems. We’re not yet certain whether the problems lie in the driver or the game, but as soon as we have news we’ll share it with you

Thanks for your patience in this matter, and hopefully we’ll have some direct news for you very soon.

Yeah, thought so. MeechMunchie, have you tried the game on another computer?

And try doing that thing with the rundlls. It could be one of those somehow conflicting with it. And, while we're at it, if you can tell me, what programs are you running in the background as you boot the game?

Latest news regarding the Stranger's Wrath patch:

JAW have been giving some Steam forum posters the update early; as a result of a minor issue cropping they've delayed the patch from going live (read the quote below for details):

http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...&postcount=747
:

6 people from this forum [NOTE: that's the Steam Forums] have had the update directly from us.

Only 1 was disappointed, and that's because his graphics card is below the minimum spec allowed.

I'll let those who have received the update tell you what they think.

We have asked Valve however to hold off making it live, whilst we fix something that people WILL ask about...

Because the game is running so much faster now, the controls appear to "stick" and you have to get Stranger to "jump" to unstick them.

This is because the original games control input system was designed for a game running at 30fps, NOT 180fps like some have had today, as a result input gets muddled.

You can quick fix it by re-enabling the new "vsync" option in the Launcher, however as our tech director is off to Mexico on Monday for 2 weeks, I wanted to get this in there and done PRIOR to his last day of work tomorrow.

Something else we've done that we kept quiet was to enable support for PROPER 5.1 and 7.1 audio systems, this was tested by 2 on the forums, and both have confirmed it working.

So the plan is to fix up the control "glitch" in the next hour, then get an updated exe off to the guys who spotted this issue, ALL being well, the update *WILL* be released tomorrow morning.

Thanks for your patience guys

Cheers

Stewart
Guess who the one guy it didn't work for was?

Anyone got graphics cards recommendations? I'm looking for something in the region of £100, needs to fit into a smallish base unit.

This is my answer to everything, but pick up a copy of PC Gamer. They've got all the info you'll need.

Reinstalled AE. I guess third time's the charm, it works now. Can I run it in a window?

I'd rather not buy a magazine when I have the collective consciousness of the Internet. I'll see what people say (I also asked on the Steam forum), and if I don't get a definitive answer I'll check out PC Gamer.

Yes, but with a PCG mag you get no crap whatsoever, only verifiable fact. More to the point, they also know how to use the internet, know where to look, are likely more skilled at research than you or me, and have 10 or so people working on it at the same time. They then review the latest gear, and (this is the bit that should interest you) present the latest version of The Rig with the month's upgrades.

The Rig is a computer built to three specifications:

It must be capable of running every single PC game available today.
It must be capable of running every PC game released for the next two years.
It must cost under £1,000 pounds to build.

As such, every component is the very best representation of value obtainable. And on the cover disc you'll be able to get The Big Gear Hunt, which shows the best deals they (experts on PC's, the internet and research) could find.

Oh, and there's the rest of the magazine. It's good.

Manco 01-21-2011 09:21 AM

I'll keep that in mind, then. As it is, I've already got plenty of advice from the Steam forums to be getting on with, but if I get stuck I'll pick up a copy.

DarkHoodness 01-21-2011 10:55 AM

I've been lurking, reading, and keeping my own tabs on this during the past week.

Yay, awesome job JAW are doing. I'm hoping people will start treating them with more respect once this fix is out. Hopefully me and many others will be able to re-play Stranger again. :) (Unless my PC really is that underpowered and all my waiting would have been for not much... :P But then that's my fault.)

Manco 01-21-2011 11:04 AM

As far as I can tell, the completed patch has been passed on to Valve and we're now waiting for it to go live on the Steam servers.

Disregard.

DarkHoodness 01-21-2011 01:53 PM

I've played through the tutorial bit - Stranger now works for me at a playable framerate! :D Yay! :D Except for when some menus open (like the ammo selection screen) but I think that it's 'cause my PC is a little below the system requirements.

However I've got this bug with some NPCs - Their hats, eyes, weapons and other accessories animate with their model as they should, but their bodies stay still like this:

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1295650098

Seems to happen randomly with some NPCs but not others, and not all the time either, only when Stranger is close to some of them or when looking at them from some angles.

I'll try validating the files and see what happens.

Hats off to JAW though, it's playable now. :) I'm loving how they upgraded the sound quality too.

Yeah, an ancient Radeon 9800 Pro. Still got this bug after validating.

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1295651199

I spy with my little eye...

I wonder what's causing it.

Yeah, I have no idea what's been fixed in terms of ATI cards by the patch, but there was an announcement a few days ago that JAW and ATI were working together to fix the issue.

Basically, they think the problem lies with ATI's OpenGL drivers, not the game itself.

You might have to wait until they come up with a new ATI driver.

EDIT: Do you have Catalyst AI running? If so, try disabling it.

EDIT: Do you have Catalyst AI running? If so, try disabling it.

My drivers are old and don't have that feature, and it seems I can't update the drivers because "They're not checked with the windows logo" according to the dialogue boxes that appeared.

I need a new PC. Any other workarounds in the mean time? Thanks for the advice, BTW.

(Hehe, sorry I'll stop posting these now, they do look funny though. :P)

Nipedley 01-22-2011 05:10 AM

I'm amazed you can even run that on a 9800 Pro!

I'd be tempted to see if there are any modified more recent drivers available, don't pay too much attention to Windows whining about them :) But being a 9800 Pro, it's more than possible they dropped support completely a long time ago..

Manco 01-22-2011 05:19 AM

What Nipedley said.

Also, how are you updating your drivers? Are you going through Windows Device Manager or are you downloading driver updates from ATI's site?

EDIT: Also, any idea what OpenGL version your card supports?

Nipedley 01-22-2011 06:33 AM

I don't know what operating system you are using, but here are the latest 'official' drivers for the 9800 Pro: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...3&lang=English You can find the same drivers for other operating systems on their website.

Incidentally it's the same driver that supports the X1700 I have in my old laptop, which worked OK(ish) with Stranger's Wrath pre-patch, I've yet to try it patched

DarkHoodness 01-22-2011 07:59 AM

I downloaded the latest drivers from the ATI site and attempted to install them, then aborted the installation once Windows started yelling at me about them not being tested with the windows logo. Of course, next time I re-started my PC, I found that I didn't have graphics drivers anymore, so I was forced to install the new ones regardless.

They worked, despite me being over-cautious about them breaking my PC, so I tried turning the Catalyst AI off. It didn't work, unfortunately. :( NPCs still do that weird standing still thing as shown in earlier screenshots, perhaps because even the latest drivers for my card are outdated. But at least graphics in games look slightly better and things run just a little smoother now (even though I now have the Catalyst Control Center hogging a little more memory than before...).

I think the ultimate fix would be for me to replace my ageing (7 year old) beast of a PC, and I actually feel lucky that Stranger runs at all at a playable framerate, but thanks for the advice anyway. :)

Manco 01-28-2011 05:26 AM

That looks like an issue with your OpenGL compatability - make sure your card supports OpenGL 2.1, including Geometry Shaders and Shader Model 4.

More game updates incoming, plus a Steam sale: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...6#post21031706
:

Hey gang,
Sorry I've not been around much over the past 2 weeks, but there's been a hell of a lot going on.

1. We're moving offices.
2. We've been planning updated releases.
3. Planning NEW projects.
4. Planning the 50% sale.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be releasing updates for Munch and Stranger.

Munch get's a whole raft of updates ...

Remaining achievements: A bittersweet reunion, not mine, archers at dawn, a peaceful death, riding high, zen, wheelie selfish, we’re freeeee, demonic
Changed PC default controls to WASD
Fixed superfast tick problem
Fixed joypad controls
Fixed usb sound device error
Added launcher with multiple resolution and anti-aliasing support
Fixed audio looping on cash sound issue

And Stranger is getting the following updates ...

Audio Fix (6+ channel issue within Fmod, affects G35 headphones etc).
Input Config (The Launcher now has a controls config page)
Support for non-standard 360 compatible joypads
OpenGL init code (Ensure screen res is x8 compatible).
Broken Achievement
Fixed missing misc audio cue's

On Monday the 14th of March, we are starting a week long 50% discount sale!

By the time the sale starts the 2 updates WILL be live, we're hoping to get the Munch one out around mid-week (this week), and the Stranger one next week.

We're STILL waiting for ATI to provide us with a fixed OpenGL driver to test with, something they apparently already tested internally and it works fine, but until I actually have it here and test it on my machine I don't believe it.

These updates will mark the last, until we release the localized versions, which we're hoping to do by the end of March, but due to other commitments may get delayed slightly.

Thanks for all the support (and abuse) over the past couple of months, some of which we did deserve, but as I hope most of you can tell from the amount of time I've spent here, and the amount of posts I've made that we feel VERY strongly about our userbase and will do what we can do help you guys out.

However there is a time when we need to move on to new projects and to get those up to speed.

Thanks for your support.

Stewart.

Apologies for the double post, but the latest updates for Stranger's Wrath and Munch's Oddysee are now live.

For Stranger, the update will download automatically when you restart Steam.

For Munch, see this post from Stewart on the Steam forums: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...&postcount=305
:

Munch's v2 Update is now live on the Oddworld site ...

http://www.oddworld.com/updates/Munc..._UPDATE_v2.zip

Download this 2.4MB zip and extract it into the "\bin\" folder in the Munch install directory.

You MUST run "launcher.exe" to play the game now, or it won't work.

We got some drop shadows in there, there were some issues getting the Dynamic shadows to work, so those are NOT included at this time, sorry.

But you now have the ability to Choose ANY native resolution, windowed or fullscreen. Along with Anti Aliasing ;)

Also the main keyboard movement controls have been altered so that WASD are used to move the main char, instead of the cursor keys...

There are a few other fixes under the hood, none of which I can remember right now.

Enjoy.

It's not auto-updating through Steam because the Valve guy in charge of doing that is in Vietnam, in case you were wondering.

iamkratos 03-28-2011 10:53 AM

Hi everyone. F.O.A., my pc is powerful enough, I have al the drivers and all the requirements. However, I'm experiencing a very curious bug in Stranger¡s Wrath.
////////////////SPOILERS AHEAD\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
When I am a steef and i begin to fight the wolvarks in the river dam level, then they shoot at me the shoot NOTHING at all. It happens there onward. I don't know what to do. I've searche everywhere for this problem and have found nothing.

Any ideas / help?

iamkratos 03-28-2011 11:33 AM

////////////////SPOILERS AHEAD\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Curious. Once passed the dam sector, and rescue the friendly townsfolk you are given a new cool armor and begin a part of the game with a boat.
There, the enemies shoot bullets instead of nothingness and you receive damage again.
Everything seems normal here.

I'll post again if I find more unexplicable bugs.

MeechMunchie 03-29-2011 11:15 PM

Dipstikk 06-02-2011 11:38 AM

So hey.

I'm trying to run Stranger's Wrath through Wine, and while I got the game up and running, and while I get sound during the menu and the cutscenes, I don't have any sound in the actual game. The mouse also doesn't work in the game, so I can't aim the camera at all.

I'm using linux because I can't afford an idiot-proof OS for my partition (I still barely understand how to use linux) and couldn't code my way out of a paper bag, so if you need me to do something that involves more than downloading a file, like, patching or updating with winetricks, tell me how to do it in excruciating detail because otherwise I'll be wasting our time asking millions of "how do I do this or that" questions that are probably basic to you.

So yeah. Thank you in advance. No rush, I got Mass Effect to work finally so I can occupy my tiny little mind with that while I wait.

Mouse doesn't work, can't move the camera.
Sound won't play at all in game.
