But I doubt it has anything to do with CS, since this was on their mind before they had a good idea about CS.

The idea of Citizen Siege is older than you think.

_GrubHunter_ 11-07-2006 12:40 AM

Welcom everybody again. Max the Mug: How much old?..

Sapphire 11-08-2006 02:05 AM

Personally, I think it boils down to a matter of audience sophistication. It feels like they assume that we need to be hit with a sledgehammer to be able to grasp a concept, or embrace an idea that might be outside of our comfort zone.

This is really rather unfortunate for us, because it means that OWI probably feels it has to test the waters before turning out anything more unfamiliar than a very well-rehearsed genre. The names, the idea, and the blatant hit-over-the-head message might be things they feel are necessary evils in order to get the clear for marketing anything more risky than that.

While I totally understand why Lorne Lanning would like to feel out the market before releasing anything Oddworld into Hollywood, I wish that we as a public audience would have come off a bit more favorably in his eyes. I know I can understand the disgust he has with the current government, but as I was discussing this with somebody the other day, we realized that, if this film is released in three years, the topic may not be as fresh as he had hoped it would be. Not only that, but you'd be alienating a good chunk of your potentially receptive audience.

I highly agree with the idea that somebody mentioned about the seriousness of the idea clashing with the sarcastic names. It worked so well for Oddworld because their entire culture was like that. Not only that, but it was funny because the mudokons seemed like they were just THAT thick that they could receive blatant advertising like that and only absorb the positive slogan out of it. (Hmm...sounds familiar...a culture that needs to be hit over the head with a message to understand it...)

So, yeah. My random collection of thoughts at 3 in the morning.

I leave the forums for a few months, come back and find this :D

Thankyou Max, you have made my life seem worthwhile.

Just thought I'd mention that Raymond Swanland has updated his page with talk of CS aswell.

Here is- http://www.raymondswanland.com/Pages/Title01.html

Edit- Ooops, Sorry was just looking at Robert Browns site just before I posted that and I got the two mixed.:P

Fuzzle Guy 11-08-2006 09:40 AM

This story has a touch of Abes Oddysee.

It's exactly the same idea as Oddworld. Total capitalism. No labor rights. Horrible working conditions. Money=power. All they did was take out the Inhabitants. BTW, I think not many CS viewers are going to find this forum.

Xavier 11-08-2006 10:58 PM

well we will make it a bit more obvious when CS is going to be promoted, don't worry :)

BTW, I think not many CS viewers are going to find this forum.

I have already added keywords relating directly to Citizen Siege to the OWF's META keywords. As a hefty proportion of our visitors are directed from search engines, adding these keywords especially at this earlier stage of production, will give us an advantage in attracting CS interested visitors.

To further add to Xavier's previous post, there already is, and definitely will be more CS related changes in the near-future. If you or other members have any ideas, may it be ways to promote the OWF, or how we can better modify the forums to accommodate CS please start a thread in Forum Suggestions & Help by all means

I hope Citizen Seige isn't going to be your typical modern movie, which doesn't have a good story just good visuals. Because that means that we'll get loads of Newbs on the forum like we did when they released the Stranger (A First Person Shooter, which attracts people who don't like Strategy games. Thus leaving them without a functional brain, known as "txt tlkin ppl or u cud cal em newbs" (I strongly dislike most Stranger Fans who don't even know about Abe or Munch))

He created a pun/portmanteau that’s on the same word play level as Nolybab or Glukkon.

I know this is going back two pages.
I see that Nolyblab is Babylon backwards.
But what did Glukkon come from?

When have you ever known Oddworld Inhabitants to not have a good story?

That's slightly going off-topic, and it's much more appropriate if you ask this in the Oddworld Questions and Answers Vα thread, where you'll be guaranteed a good response

Exactly! Oddworld has always based it's success on storylines and this will be no different just because it's departing from our traditional Oddworld based storylines. I'm confident CS will be an excellent movie with a well composed story.

Good point. :p

Xavier 11-10-2006 03:01 AM

Lorne describes himself as a story-teller so I guess we can expect some great story in CS and in all his future projects

ziggy 11-10-2006 02:18 PM

I'm curious now as to what the movie will look like. It's a CGI fim right? I wonder what the style of the characters, surroundings and etc. will look like.

Wil 11-10-2006 03:46 PM

Damn, that’s something I forgot in my report, but I suppose this is pretty tentative stuff. My understanding is that it’ll be realistic, but the characters will be slightly stylised.

Bullet Magnet 11-10-2006 04:14 PM

Like Team Fortress, only not so extreme?

Nate 11-11-2006 04:32 AM

A question for Max: Is Lorne going to be the actual Director of CS or just Creative Director?

Wil 11-11-2006 04:35 AM

Director.

Nate 11-11-2006 04:38 AM

Jeez, I wonder how he's going to direct a film being developed in Vancouver.

Bullet Magnet 11-11-2006 04:45 AM

Go to Vancouver?

Nate 11-11-2006 05:06 AM

And drag everyone he needs from Emeryville to Vancouver? I doubt it.

Wil 11-11-2006 05:16 AM

Lorne and Sherry operate in Berkely, not Emeryville. And how many people are you thinking would be dragged up there? There aren’t many left, you know.

my understanging is, not as extreme as TF, and much more darker :p

Sapphire 11-11-2006 08:54 AM

Wait... the film is being produced in Vancouver? I must have missed that. Cool beans.

ziggy 11-11-2006 01:24 PM

I'm glad the movie will be dark, but I hope it has humor too, like the first 2 oddworld games did. That kind of humour. I like dark stuff, but I don't want to sit through a completely serious/depressing hour and a half.

used:) 11-11-2006 04:40 PM

Ugh, the "humor" was the worst part for me. I mean the stupid cheap stuff like Abe banging his head off things and silly noises being made. Then there was other humor like the bad ending and in the AO intro how all of the glukkons burst out into coughing from laughter. That was the good kind for me.

Berkeley is the next suburb over from Emeryville. The early reports of their move listed both as destinations.

There still would be a few people around and I know I'd be pissed off if I had to move away from Berkeley, especially just two years after being forced to move away from SLO, both of which are rather pleasant towns.

c'mon man, you gotta have really cheap pointless jokes. Lighten up.

I guess it would be funny in the end. Though, it's rather hard to maintain a view of both the serious message Oddworld is trying to send while they try and jampack little bits of humor throughout the game.

Hmm, as if that made sense. XD

ziggy 11-13-2006 07:27 PM

hmm good point though

Xavier 11-13-2006 11:13 PM

Well I think the humor in AO, AE and even SW were nice, the only problem I got was with MO :p

hm.. MY most hilarious moment playing SW was when Raider says "You think you can be like us? You think you cab be NORMAL?!?!" and of course running and hitting all the walls....

Cullen Heath 11-14-2006 03:39 PM

What does that have to do with Oddworld Inhabitants making a film?

no_us3rname 11-14-2006 04:33 PM

Thanks for the info OddBlog! I am curious, and I bet it will be totally alright!

It was humor, not dark humor ;)

but I have to admit I prefer the dark humor. And I think CS will be full of it
