The Marching Mudokon 01-23-2005 02:44 PM

Yeah, I got hardcover too. I couldn't justify spending 200 bucks on a book.

The Marching Mudokon 01-27-2005 11:39 PM

I got it!

Yayyy I got the book! Unfortunately I can't read it until Sunday, 'cause I'm on holidays. My neighbour just rang me to tell me (she's looking after my house for me). Unfortunately she also told me my fish died. Anyway, I can't wait until Sunday!

Leto 01-27-2005 11:47 PM

Poor, poor fishy. Fish, fish, fishy fish.

Hurrah! You have now got a copy! I suggest thoroughly reading it, not just looking at the purdy pictures, mmmkay? :p

The Marching Mudokon 01-27-2005 11:51 PM

Oh yes. I'm gonna read everything in that excellent book of mine waiting for me at home, that's for sure.
And thank you for your sympathy for my fish.

Leto 01-27-2005 11:55 PM

Oh, and a last tip- Do not- I repeat- DO NOT read this with your mother, or let your mother or anyone else read it. They'll get grease on it! Trust me on this one.

The Marching Mudokon 01-27-2005 11:57 PM

I know what you mean. I already told my friends NO-one is borrowing my book, let alone touch it without washing their hands at least 10 times over :p.

Leto 01-28-2005 12:01 AM

Hey, that's like me with everything. Even family members. And honestly, read with gloves. I have to now, just a bit obsessive, no? Just, whenever I turn a page, a darker black streak goes on the page from my hand. GARGH!

The Marching Mudokon 01-28-2005 12:05 AM

I'm pretty pedantic about my stuff that means a lot to me and boy does this book mean a lot to me!

Karamsoul 01-28-2005 06:02 AM

Hey, does anyone know if this book is being released in the United States? I'd love to see it in Barnes and Nobles or Books a Million. You guys in Australia are lucky :P

atusiya@ 01-28-2005 06:41 AM

READ ME and BUY IT!!

The Shadowman 01-28-2005 08:40 AM

Yeah put it in Barnes and Nobles....Me like Gamespy Oddworld man!

Wil 01-28-2005 01:49 PM

I emailed Ballistic, and apparently my book was sent six weeks ago. I have no idea where it is, but they were very kind, and have sent me a replacement. It's a limited edition, though I don't know what number it is. I'm not bothered, to be perfectly frank - it's one in a thousand whatever the number on the certificate is. :D

The Marching Mudokon 01-28-2005 04:00 PM

Thats good Max, alot of companies probably wouldn't do that. So your very lucky.

Leto 01-28-2005 04:16 PM

Did you origionally order a limited edition? If not- lucky lucky... I got no. 153 of 1000. Hurrah!

The Marching Mudokon 01-29-2005 12:31 AM

I got home early just so I could read the book and...wow :D. If anyone doesn't have this book I suggest to get it right now, stop what you are doing and order it. My friend got it a little greasy !

Look on page 118, it does say one of the Weirdos worships the fleech.

yodaman 01-29-2005 02:22 AM

Hey people, thanks for the info on the book. I've been waiting for this to come out for a long time! I have a couple questions and maybe some of you can help me out.

1) What is the difference between the regular hardcover and the limited edition? Is it just the cover, or is there anything else that is not in the regular
hardcover?

2) How much of the book is dedicated to the Stranger's Wrath game? I have been playing it and the art design of the game is phenomenal! I hope it's more than a few pages.

Thanks a bunch!

The Marching Mudokon 01-29-2005 04:18 PM

Yodaman, There's only 1000 limited edition versions, they are leather bound, comes with authentication slip signed by Lorne Lanning and Sherry Mckenna and two other important people. Apart from that I don't know.
Also, does anyone have the collectors folio edition? I've never heard of it before until I saw it in the publication page.

p.s Welcome to the Oddworld Forums, Yodaman.

Al the Glukkon 01-29-2005 05:45 PM

Interesting. they used the birds in the Munch section of the book in Stranger's Wrath.

yodaman 01-29-2005 11:53 PM

Hey Marching Mudokon, thanks for the welcome! This is a great forum!

Thanks for the info on the LE version too. It sure is tempting, but I may have to go with the regular hardcover. That's a lot of moolah! :)

How's the Stranger's Wrath section of the book -- as I mentioned, I love the new game, so I am interested in how much stuff is focused on it. Not that I don't love the rest of the Oddworld games -- I think all of the art design is fantastic.

Look on page 118, it does say one of the Weirdos worships the fleech.

It does not say that at all. Alfs Assistant on the first page of this thread made that official. I also have this book and when I read the paragraph that you're refering to, I knew that they didn't worship the fleech. It is saying that the fleech is part of the ceremonial themes assigned to one of the mudokons, not that they worshiped them.

But talking about the oils on your fingers staining the pages, that only lasts for a while coz I got them on the first couple of pages, then I found a pair of decent gloves so I use them now and the other finger prints have long gone.

The section of the book devoted to Stranger's Wrath is a lot shorter than the others, and contains no art that hasn't already been released on the Internet. I suspect that at the time of compiling the book, there was less art to choose from. No, wait - it would make more sense that OWI didn't want to reveal to much about their upcoming game at that point.

*big cheesey grin* :D

You mean those big beaks purple birds? I havn't seem them in Stranger's Wrath.

:

*big cheesey grin* :D
Hmmm... I know you have something to do with those birds, Max.

They do look non-mudosy.

Al the Glukkon 01-30-2005 12:57 PM

They were on the ground when you come out of the cave in Mongo valley.

Oddish 01-31-2005 11:23 AM

Awsome.

Anyway, on the Interns pages, it has a little of skech of an Intern turning into a Vykker!?

Esus 01-31-2005 01:05 PM

It would seem that an early concept was for interns to be an earlier form of vykkers in the life cycle...

Wil 02-01-2005 10:00 AM

Possibly. The wording used in the sketch is “Interns evolve into Vykkers” Earlier in the book, they annotate a sketch of a Chronicler with something like “More evolved Oldger,” ‘Oldger’ being an early word for Glukkons. It could be designers slang for a design that looks more evolved, or conversely, more primitive.

Or it could be that Vykkers are a ‘more’ evolved species from the same lineage as Interns. Or you could be right. It could also be that this is still true in Oddworld cannon, but we just haven't seen it yet.

yodaman 02-01-2005 10:35 AM

Thanks, Max, for the info. Yeah, it would make sense that they wouldn't want to give up any secrets before the game came out. Too bad, though, as I would have loved to see a lot of the art for it. I've got to order it anyway -- all the art is great!

Sorry, I mis-read the paragraph but now that you have mentioned it I understand it properly.
Has anyone seen (in the publication page) the collectors folio edition? I didn't know what it was so I e-mailed Ballistic Publishing and this is what they said:

Adam,
The Folio Edition -- you are observant! We are still considering if and
how we might do this edition at all. We might do a very few of these --
double size (width, height and thickness), hand tooled heavy leather and
boxed binding. If we do these they will be extremely limited (just 1 - 10
probably) and could cost upwards of US$ 1,500.

We are looking at the possibility extending the editions we print to the
finest books ever made -- large folio sizes, highly decorated bindings,
gilding, hardware and boxing. However it is extremely expensive to make
books like this -- especially in very small quantities. At this stage we are
still investigating how we might make these editions.

I would be happy to hear your comments on collectors editions and the market
for them.

Regards

Mark

Very interesting...

to karamsoul-

www.budplant.com in Grass Valley, California has the book for order in the states, just type Ballistic in the search bar and they have it. And it seems it only takes 1-6 days to deliver (depending on the distance of course)...I live about 4-5 hours away from Grass Valley and they even allow you to visit thier wharehouse in person if you live nearby.

tsioc 02-02-2005 09:19 PM

thank you Comick!

AWWW 02-05-2005 12:58 AM

What going on??
I thought the books were avalible internationly, that they were only printed in Australia.
So all you people brought your Oddworld art books online??
Anyone find it in any shops??
I always love concept art (I was shocked to see the MO credits not having any concept art) as I like to draw and stuff.

On a different note good on Oddworld for releasing a art book, as there an't that many western game develpers doing this (as in Japan have good art books for all of thier major games and anime)
This could mean more coming for other games companys too*fingers crossed*

smerles 02-05-2005 03:44 AM

There's a reseller in Germany, but that would be more expensive than buying the book online... (Book costs 20 Euro more in the german shop than on ballisticpublishing.com, that are roundabout 40 AUD) Other shops I don't know.

They are available internationally, via the online sellers. :) Ballistic only have a select few "real world" retailers they sell through, as I understand it - so if you want the book, you have to buy direct from the publishers.

...And yeah, agreed on concept art, that was (if I'm honest) the only reason I bought the book, really... *guilt, guilt*

BTW, Max, did your book ever arrive? I've had things delayed a couple of weeks because of customs and whatnot (something I ordered from a seller in Cirencester was diverted, via SWEDEN), but they turned up in the end.

Wil 02-05-2005 12:57 PM

Yes, my book did arrive, and I sure do love it to bits. I have this nagging in the back of my mind that there must still be a copy floating around the Royal Mail/Post Office/Consignia/Whatever they call themselves now.

The Marching Mudokon, that is some amazing info. Completely independently I saw that Folio edition listed (when I got the limited edition) and wondered what it was. I asked my dad if he had any clue. All he could tell me was that folio is a standard book size, double that of octavo, which TAoOI is. I was thrown into convulsions of happiness at the prospect, and immediately told Xavier of the possibility. Good on you for asking Mr Snoswell, though! I want that folio edition!

Thanks Comick! That's where I ended up ordering from. I will receive it sometime next week in the mail.
Karamsoul.

The Marching Mudokon 02-08-2005 11:31 PM

I wish I could get that folio edition, but I don't have enough money on me (I'm only 14). I can't believe there would only be ten! Now that something for every oddworld fans dream.

Oddish 02-12-2005 10:37 AM

Has anyone noticed Stranger's Poncho desgine has the same pattern on the Mudokon temple on the inspration page. Mabey Stranger stripped it off the wall or something.

The Marching Mudokon 02-12-2005 04:14 PM

What page number? You know how the Weirdos are assigned the scrab, paramite and fleech theme, I was wondering why the fleech? I thought it would be a creature that had more meaning to mudokon culture.

Wil 02-14-2005 02:30 AM

The Wierdoes are from Necrum, where the main creatures seem to be Scrabs, Paramites and Fleeches. That's all I can suggest.

Comick 02-16-2005 01:04 PM

-To Tsioc, Sorry about the slow reply, but I'm glad I could help!!
