So people should design their work around what's going to get them high review scores?

I'm not saying you have to appeal to the lowest common denominator. I didn't realize just how important having the ads be in the game itself was to them until just a couple posts ago from Alex. To me, it seemed like a small thing that, if done a different way, could've been viewed a bit better by more people.

It didn't occur to me that one of the two methods (in-game or in-menu) actually meant more to the company. Because they were presented in the game more as ads, (along with ads for Paramite Pies, etc) I just thought it was all about getting the word out about those games.

If they do return for the PC release, then hey, I'll just have to live with it. I just wanted to voice my opinion on the subject while there's still some time before the other platform releases.

I think SoBe machines were better integrated in those landscapes than ne 'n' Tasty's advertisement.

That's your opinion but personally I think the way it was done in NnT was done way better.

I'm not an expert on digital distribution or gigglybytes, but this (rather blunt) solution offered by some of the other forum members seems like it would add quite a bit of weight to the size of the game. Would this impact the cost of uploading it to digital markets to compensate the additional bandwidth? I'd imagine in this area, the idea is to keep the file size as low as possible, so a couple of low-res advertisments seems like, yunno, the better option.

The half an hour of download to get NnT was long enough (and I know that was quite fast compared to some others). I would have hated to wait longer just because OWI/JAW opted to integrate some HD trailers for other games. :p

It took me 5 fucking hours!

Ok, granted my internet went down in the middle of it, but still!

Some people like you are over privileged Xavier!

Trailers aren't an effective way of cross promoting these days, because people could just watch them on the internet. Bonus trailer easter eggs aren't exciting these days.

Very true, this is the kind of stuff that was a "nice to have" more than 10 years ago.

Also very true.

I suppose that's true. I guess my point is that it would've turned some people on to some games that they otherwise wouldn't have looked into. The ones in New n Tasty don't really give you any information or much to go on about the games themselves. A lot of people won't be motivated to look up Galak Z or Secret Ponchos just because their covers were shown on the Mudokon counters.

On the other hand, they might be compelled to Google "What the hell was that thing on the billboard in New 'n' Tasty", with the same result.

I wasn't. I would have completely disregarded the whole thing if I wasn't a member of this forum.

I feel your pain. Those 35 minutes were the most painful of my life.

I can't understand why. SoBe were some vending machines with an image and a word written on it. When I first saw it I didn't know what SoBe drinks were and I thought it was a new Magog Cartel's product or something like that.

I didn't play New 'n' tasty yet but I'm pretty sure that if I did before reading this thread I would have noticed that this display shouldn't be there.

Wait a minute. SoBe actually made it into the game? Was this edited out of the Australian version, because I don't remember it at all. I know it was in the Strategy Guide, and some promotional material in Playstation Magazine, but I never saw it in-game.

Wil 08-06-2014 12:56 PM

It was in the US release. It was removed for later releases, like Europe and Australia.

Ah, that makes sense.

Out of curiosity, how frequently did they pop up, and did they do anything of value (or was it just for decoration)?

Wil 08-07-2014 01:05 AM

Anyone who played the US version stands to correct me, but I think it was every health vendo.

Slog Bait 08-07-2014 01:13 AM

Nah, I recall it alternating between the health vendo and the SoBe vendo. Towards the end of the game in the level just before the bad ending or final level I'm pretty certain it was a standard health vendo.

As a kid, I enjoyed SoBes drinks long before MO happened, so seeing it in my favourite game franchise amused me. It was subtle enough that I couldn't find it in me to care but years later I realized how bizarre it was that any Oddworld game had any type of promotion like that in it, given how anti-corporation the whole thing was.

I can't recall anything of this in the first two Oddworld games, can you?
