Huh?
:
In reguards to the AE remake title thing: New 'n' Tasty was bad enough, if they ever remake Abe's Exoddus they'd better just fucking call it Abe's Exoddus. |
:
What the fuck. |
A lot of you are complaining, but I havent seen any of you suggesting how you think they should have done the boxart. I'm interested to hear your ideas.
|
I'm not really 'complaining' like certain others around here, but I did come up with ideas for the box art as well as future trailers. What do you think of those? :)

They shouldn't have completely covered the artist's work with this god awful, painful to look at logo that just completely overwhelms the entire fucking piece They shouldn't have have made the colours so bright and in your face The atmosphere should be a lot heavier than it comes across. The biggest factor in this is the fucking logo That logo is progressively making it's way to the bottom of the "worst piece of trash to come out of this whole ordeal" list Abe's head is out of place on the cover. Even without the logo, the composition would be fucked up and unbalanced. The box art to me reads like it's supposed to be putting the focus on the center of the piece. Without the obnoxious logo, everyone would just end up staring at Abe's awkward as fuck colourful face. Atmosphere atmosphere atmosphere it reads more like it's supposed to be an action flick or some shit! The box art is beautifully painted but it's one bad decision after another and it just ends up looking like a trainwreck of "what the fuck is this supposed to be advertising" jkdgakskgsdhsdhah Also, before anyone pins me for "OH BUT HOW WILL THERE BE ANY CONTRAST" you can get extremely beautiful contrast with a minimal use of colours. AO is one of those things that when visually depicted seems like only the focal point should have vivid unearthy colours and the rest should be very dull and uninteresting. |
I don't like the cliché half face on half face off. It's very cop out for an artist to do this, i think. I'd have liked to see something more like the Abe's Exoddus boxart where Abe is kind of in a pose, rather than it just being a simple, lifeless passport-style photo of his face. I don't like how the deepest blacks in Abe's face are actually grey - it makes the drawing look amateur-ish. The eye is kind of bad too... they should model the eyes like they are on the Abe's Exoddus boxart, with fine blood vessels visible.
I agree with everything slog bait has just said. Nepsotic, you should offer suggestions though. Also, your restaurant analogy isn't accurate. You havent paid for anything New n Tasty yet. In a restaurant you pay for your food so you can criticise it if it's shit. You haven't paid for this box art. You havent done anything to deserve viewing it. I agree with you about the colours though. I think the original feel of rupture farms was like a dark dusty factory giving out loads of pollution. I liked the isolation of the factory, and the unimportance of it. It seemed like a quietly productive factory. This new box art uses bright glowing orange colours, making RuptureFarms feel dangerous and intense, explosive. I would rather they go with a dull dark green atmosphere for rupturefarms, because it would make it seem like a boring mediocre place to work, something more relatable to all of us, more realistic.. with the added slave labour, which overall gives the impression that it is the norm, that Mudokons accept themselves as an inferior race. |
For his next trick, Nepsotic is going to write me a 500 word essay about how the original box art conveyed the themes and atmosphere of AO.

While the atmosphere itself isn't entirely captured in the original boxart, the original boxart still doesn't come across nearly as messy as NnT's boxart ( the only think really taking away from the atmosphere on the original is Abe's Face). The focal point is very clear, thanks to the colour usage (most things but the focal point contain muddy and uninteresting colours), and the composition feels a lot more solid, though simple.
The original boxart was also accompanied by other marketing that made it pretty clear what should be expected from the game's atmosphere. I made direct comparisons on the first page. The colours, the logo and the textures used all show the spiritual journey protaganist would embark upon, and somewhat has the darkness and gloomyness of the overall story. The New 'n' Tasty boxart has none of this shit, it has a flashy logo and the beautifully painted background has this poor clusterfuck of a composition. It's a shame because the art is nicely done, it's just so poorly put together. I actually just asked my friend what she got from just the poster, she doesn't know anything about Oddworld, except the atmosphere AO is supposed to have, she said "it looks like some intense, dramatic, action movie poster that someone has just stuck an infomercial sticker on top of". I could go into a shit tonne of more detail about how the original conveys these themes but right now I'm tired and want to sleep. :

What I mean is you CAN criticise, but unless you throw in a compliment or some positive sugestions for improvement, you just come across as an ass. The general feeling i get from here is that you in particular moan about a lot about what is wrong but don't give any positive feedback. I might be wrong, but that's what I've gathered from reading the forum. My first post earlier was a call for people to suggest how they would have designed the boxart for New 'n' Tasty. So, pretending you haven't seen this boxart OI/JAW have released, how would you design it? I do like the original AO cover, with Abe's head through the circle. It is a visual representation of like 'Hello, I'm Abe, and I wanna tell you my story'. It reveals nothing, other than Abe himself. His quirky appearance is enough to get your attention. Simple and very nicely painted. I think there's a lot of detail in the background on the new boxart. The whole piece feels too busy. |

Give that man a fucking job. Our prayers are answered.
Yet again, comic sans saves the day. |
Don't mind me, just posting cool box arts so we've got something nice to look at in this thread.

It just has to look good. Unfortunately, JAW does not employ any graphic designers. I do think it would be nice to have a focus on the "world" part of "Oddworld". |
This isbpartly why I say they should have focused less on orange overtone. While the bottom there has a golden glow, a lot of it is dark blues and purples.

^ This guy. This fucking guy.

Ahh, I fucking love the RE4 box art.
|
I dunno man, that awful logo ruins it for me.
|
Could be worse
Could be...... ...... the NnT logo |
|
THANK YOU IT'S ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE I LOVE IT
|
Replace that with the silhouette of Abe's "I No Know" pose and you've got yourself a winner.
|
This joke is getting out of hand already. I'm not going to post another, because I don't want to lead the thread too far off topic. Not that that's really evadable.

god fucking damnit. I giggled at Fuzzle Guys HD comic sans fiasco, then lost my shit at RE cover lol. I wanna hate you guys, but there is too much sadistic love. |
And I was on a laptop. I hate using the mousepad for graphical editing. To be fair though, you added the "S" and the OWI logo. You also used abe from AO (I think I see 4 fingers), I used N'n'T, which would be easier because he isn't as fuzzy around the edges. I was super happy when I learned they gave him back his fingers while I was outlining them.

TBH I prefer Resident Abe to the actual NnT boxart. But then, I'm a stickler for minimalism.
