I don't like Sonic 2. The Chemical Plant Zone is the worst.

Sonic Adventure is good if you haven't played Sonic Adventure 2. I feel like SA2 just completely blows the first one out of the water in pretty much everything. I guess you could have an argument for SA1 for some things like a big hub world, but I didn't really like the hub world.

I only got around to playing SA1 recently, but I don't get why people like it so damn much. I haven't played SA2, so I can't make that comparison, but the controls and camera are godawful.

These three are needing a mention. Also, sorry for the crap quality, I couldn't be bothered to search for the images so I took them with my phone camera. My internet's going slow, it's not me being lazy, and the fact I've still got them.

Wolfenstein 3D is awesome, I don't find any problem with it being on the Jaguar apart from the crappy controller. Although it makes switching between weapons easier. I actually have every part that came with this. The overlay, the box, the manual, and oddly the registration card for something (I must have over 100 of those things).

V-Rally is really hard. Especially with the N64, I don't know how I used to play it. It was back when I was about 5-6 when I last played this so I should take time to get used to it again. :p

Quake is ULTIMATE!! I seriously think this is one of the best games I own on the N64. Again, I've got to get used to the controls. Also, the best cheat ever: QQQQ-QQQQ-QQQQ-QQQQ-QQQQQ on the password screen for goodies!

Other one's I should've metioned but couldn't find the games... yet ;).

GoldenEye 007 (N64, definately one of the best)
Doom (Jaguar, port is amazing)
Twisted Edge (N64)
1080 (N64)
Attack of the Mutant Penguins (Jaguar)
Heart of Darkness (PS1)
Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie (N64)
Mashed: Fully Loaded (Xbox Original, one of the earliest ones)
NFS Underground (Xbox Original, one of the earliest ones)
Mortal Kombat Trilogy (N64)

Some may have been mentioned but I like them anyway.

You have to put on your 1999 eyes and ears. Sonic Adventure was mind blowing when it first came out and I personally love the aesthetic, the music, the chao garden, etc

I still enjoy playing SA and SA2, I can't stand how fast Sonic moves in Unleashed and Colors, not to mention the fact that the characters and story were so much more badass in SA and SA2. they've made Dr. Robotnik too silly and there's too much cheesy dialouge now.

I prefer Sonic Adventure 1 over 2 though with the exception of one thing, the Chao garden, it was sooo much better in 2 trust me, why the fuck don't they bring back Chaos??? But I was sad that they took out the hub worlds like good old Station Square, the hub worlds made it an adventure game and action game all in one. Plus I used to be amazed by the voice that said "The train leaving for etc will be deaparting soon." I felt like I was really there. Christ, those hub worlds had so much potential, there was even DLC available for them. Sega was always so ahead of Nintendo.

No, I don't. If a game is good, it will hold up well no matter how old it is.

I'm not talking about the graphics ageing either, I'm on about the controls - basic, fundamental things that every game needs to do well. SA1's controls are absolutely horrible - Sonic's movements are way too loose, and the camera refuses to behave itself.

I don't even know where to start here.

Mr. Bungle 05-19-2011 03:22 PM

I'm pretty sure the reason why people love SA1 so much is due to nostalgia. Myself included.

Wings of Fire 05-19-2011 04:29 PM

Yeah, pretty sure SA1 love is due to nostalgia.

SA2 is just good, though.

@OddHunter: Controls and camera angles in 3D games have improved with time, I believe that is something that can be attributed to trial and error, Sonic Adventure was released during the"transition era". 3D games were a new frontier like motion gaming, they didn't know better. The controls and camera in SA1 and 2 are outdated, that's why critics pan it now even though they praised it when it came out. Look up Gamespot and IGN's reviews of the Dreamcast versions they're both in the 9s if memory serves.

Okay Super Mario 64 was ahead of its time but the camera and controls were far from perfect, I remember having a shit ton of problemstrying to jump on a Goomba or w/e and accidently falling into quick sand or lava.

And I didn't say the story was Citizen Kane but the characters in SA were no where near as annoying as Chip or professor Pickles and Dr. Robotnik wasn't comically incompetent. You know what I mean.

metroixer 05-19-2011 07:57 PM

So you would prefer more hedgehog on princess action rather than eggman being legit hilarious because of how loud and smug he is in colous??

Wings of Fire 05-19-2011 08:46 PM

The Sonic game with the princess was Sonic 06 which was released seven years after Sonic Adventure 1. What the fuck are you on about?

Strike Witch 05-20-2011 12:46 AM

I beat Croc and Croc 2~

Just because the controls were new and scary then it doesn't mean they could ever be considered "good", especially not now.

I don't judge the graphics of older games because the technology was literally not good enough for anything better.
But they were clearly capable of producing full 3D games at the time SA1 was released. The technology was evidently there, they just were unable to implement it in a good way - they only got away with it because there was nothing to compare it to at the time.

Besides, even then people noticed:
:

To further the problems caused by this lack of consistency, the cameras for Sonic Adventure, though they have been cleaned up considerably from the oftentimes painful Japanese release, are still incredibly frustrating at points. Slowing down only manages to be such a pain because the abrupt camera switches you normally don't notice because you're flying by them are all now painfully apparent, and the controls have a nasty habit of being dependant on he viewpoint. So much so, in fact, that you've got my personal guarantee that they will kill you more than you're lack of gameplay skills, or Anoop will eat his copy of Pen Pen.

I just can't tell you how many times I cursed at the screen like a sailor due to some sort of visually impaired demise. There is nothing more annoying than busting your ass for 20 minutes to get through a level only to bite it right before the next checkpoint because the camera has just swapped the absolute definitions of left and right at your expense. The sad part is, as much as I loved the game, it got so frustrating that I just had to walk away. The checkpoints seem so few and far between, and the most ill-conceived angles always found a way to crop up a good 10 minutes into an area, right after a seriously demanding sequence of jumps and maneuvers. What resulted was yet another visit to the better parts of a good 50% of the game's levels, and regardless of what anyone will tell you, this is not fun after about the 30th time.

:

One of the biggest complaints in the Sonic Adventure, camera control problems, has been fixed... somewhat. When you play in Sonic and Shadow's games, there aren't many viewing problems and as far as I can remember, camera angle problems didn't surface when playing the shooting sequences of Eggman and Tails. But once you get into the adventure (AKA item searching) games of Knuckles and Rouge, you'll definitely encounter some annoying camera control troubles. When searching for items, large open areas are quite easy to navigate. It's the small areas, cramped corridors, and other hard-to-view rooms that make camera control a real chore. While there's not a whole lot of enemies to encounter in the Knuckle/Rouge games, it's aggravating when you're trying to grab an item by "guesstimation."

As a side note, camera controls have been an issue with Sonic games for a long time; up until about Unleashed, I reckon.

Hazel-Rah 05-20-2011 09:44 AM

I've never played this but I have it on Sonic's Collection, looks amazing.

He said he preferred the sonic adventure stories which were I think trying to be serious. I just used an extreme example since Sonic 06 is pretty much sonic adventure 3 with the attempting-to-be-serious story levels getting cranked up beyond comprehension.

Nope. There's a lot of very clear difference between them. There's also two games of slippery scale shittiness in the way of that claim.

Strike Witch 05-20-2011 11:01 PM

I never much liked Sonic games.

If anyone knows where to acquire and original PS1 PAL copy of Rayman, I'd greatly appreciate the intel. My cousins destroyed my copy when they were given it by somebody, and I want to play it again. It was my first favourite game. Hell, my first game period.

mr.odd 05-23-2011 02:56 PM

I love Rayman. I'm so glad they're finally making a new game that doesn't involve those stupid rabbits. I think it's actually an original remake coming to XBL market place and playstation network. Not sure though.

EDIT: I found the video in case any of you are interested.
