Hello chumps :)

Ok so er hi....

been a while...

Crashpunk 01-31-2011 09:37 AM

Hey Gilrod :D

hedjeroo 01-31-2011 10:37 AM

As far as I know, NURBS is basically the vector art of 3D modelling.
I've never actually used NURBS myself as I haven't been taught how to use it at university - it's probably intended to go in the course any year now though, as I can't see why it'd be avoided. Poly modelling is nice and all but NURBS seems pretty cool. I've done a bit of toying on the side to see what it was as I heard that it pertained a lot to organics mostly, and wanting to be a character artist and all that's relevant to me.

This is very good news indeed though! Glad to hear the original assets are still around and are being used!

Had a thought regarding Abe HD- do you guys think Abe will still be bright blue, or instead the green/purple hue that he is supposed to be?

Only reason I ask is that in the original, I believe he was blue to increase his visibility on screen- surely in HD, possibly with 3D characters, this distinction would not be needed?

On the other hand, Abe is referred to as being blue by Phleg in Exoddus, so who knows :p

Havoc 01-31-2011 11:53 AM

Abe's always been blue as far as I know?

Sekto Springs 01-31-2011 01:03 PM

Abe's not actually blue, they just tinted him as such to distinguish him from other Mudokon sprites.

OANST 01-31-2011 01:08 PM

So Lorne thinks all Mudokons look alike?

Racist.

He looks pretty different from the other muds in this picture, if you ask me.

Manco 01-31-2011 02:00 PM

Yes, but that wouldn't translate very well into a 2D sprite-based game, would it?

Michael 01-31-2011 03:23 PM

I meant how in AO/AE, the in-game Abe...

http://cdn.steampowered.com/v/gfx/ap...g?t=1292476002

Is a very different colour than the render/CGI Abe:

Just wondered if maybe Abe will be the latter colour in the HD version :) I don't know about anybody else, but I certainly wouldn't call that second pic blue! :p

ledsnipe 01-31-2011 03:40 PM

Dont get me wrong i happy about this but i really hope they start thinking of new story's for oddworld like Munches exodus or hand of odd.

Paul_hibs3 01-31-2011 05:44 PM

You know how JAW and OWI said it was meant to be an E3 press release. How would they announce it? E.g. obviously at E3 its the top 3 companies playstation, microsoft, nintendo who have 1-2 hours each on one of the 3 or 4 days. Then its the big game companies e.g. EA games, Ubisoft, 2k games etc who have the 1 hour or more each on the summary of their projects also, and then slots on showing demos of the big games.

Does it not cost a lot of money, because it sounds like only the big companies announce and show what they plan to achieve in the coming years on the big screen or even a small screen. So how does a company like JAW/OWI announce this? Would it be shown through EA games section?

Nate 01-31-2011 07:08 PM

There are generally a lot of small companies showing off their stuff in the smaller exhibition spaces. The better gaming press generally scout them out because they provide interesting stories.

Crashpunk 02-01-2011 04:23 AM

I would give anything to go to E3. Its one of my dreams.

Stranger4002 02-01-2011 04:51 AM

Good news I suppose; I think its a good idea for drawing in new fans, but I think its kinda lame they won't get started on a new game...

A fangame is the only solution. But it would take many years to develop.

Stranger4002 02-01-2011 12:11 PM

Nah; ideally, we need an official OWI release that continues where the Quintology left off.

I mean; remaking Abe's Oddysee is great for gaining new fans who didn't get the chance to play the original and I think with the original's postive acclaim, its certainly going to work...but its a bit of a let down for fans who are dying for something new like me. :/

Paul 02-01-2011 12:14 PM

NURBS is something FAR better than polygons. NURBS(Non-uniform rational B-splines) are mathematical curves between points rather than having fixed "lines" been points which is what polygons are. NURBS have infinate detail level when it comes to being converted :D E.g you can convert NURBS to whatever resolution of polygons that you like.

Edit: Btw game engines would likely use NURBS if there was enough processing power since it would look so much more awesome

Manco 02-01-2011 12:20 PM

So basically NURBS are to polygons as vectors are to bitmaps?

Havoc 02-01-2011 02:13 PM

Or, for another analogy, NURBS are to polygons as regular film is to digitally stored film.

Sounds cool, does that basically mean that the original assets from AO and the like can just be used and retextured or is it not that easy?

Manco 02-01-2011 02:17 PM

It could be that easy, but my guess is they might run into compatability issues since the original assets were made in 1997.

On top of that, they may want to update the original assets to a higher polycount (or whatever the 3D jargon is for it).

Xavier 02-02-2011 08:02 AM

Ooooh, that's why they needed to scan those models made by the Shiflett brothers.

Remember that the '3d' models in Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus are really just sprites rendered in a 3d modeling application (Unless they were painted which I doubt) which means that they didn't really have a poly limit for the models, which could mean that they are usable without much tweaking (beside upgrading model versions etc.)

Wonder how much poly's the actual CGI Models in those games were, they could be suitable for a 3D game...

AbeMudokon on Twitter said he just found a Meech as his new pet.

AO HD is reintroducing Meeches? Dun dun dun...

People keep asking me what we're announcing on Feb 14th, there's nothing, at all, really nothing. #Oddworld

As far as XBLA is concerned, the future of Stranger is a bit less clear, at least for now. “We have Stranger all ready to go on XBLA, but the answer keeps being no. We’re still talking to them and we’re hoping to work it out.”
FUCK! I'm going to beat Microsoft into submission.

I'm glad they're trying to work something out it least.

I hope it gets crushed, the whole point of the Meeches are to be extinct. It's kinda their thing you know.

Bullet Magnet 02-03-2011 03:58 AM

You never liked Jurassic Park, did you, Xav?

Xavier 02-03-2011 07:26 AM

That not the point...

The fact that Meeches are extinct was to make people aware of the threat of animal extinction. Bringing them back would kind of ruin the point and will feel too much like a Disney happy ending.

Sekto Springs 02-03-2011 07:53 AM

I agree with Xav. Meeches were designed to be extremely cool creatures that we never see. If they were ever to show them, it would have to be in a flashback or perhaps a prologue.
