It is the mouth of a hagfish, Class Myxini, the only craniates (animals with a skull) that do not also have a vertebrate column (a backbone). They lack jaws, and as you can see they have a pair of horizontally moving structures equipped with tooth-like projections made from keratin. When placed in a bucket of water and distressed, they can convert it into slime in seconds. I didn't quite believe it until I saw it for myself.

Who here can honestly say they would not want one of these as a pet?

A dolphin's genitalia is muscular (Or versatile or something. Some adjective.) enough to grab you by the foot and pull you under water.

Both genders.

What on earth is it?

OANST 10-09-2008 03:44 PM

I thought it was possible that I was going to die this morning due to a spider. I got out of the shower and toweled off. While I was putting the towel back on the rack I noticed a small black spider on my arm. I looked more closely and realized that it was dead. It occurred to me that it was probably in the towel and got crushed as I was vigorously rubbing my naked body (every story needs sex, right?). As I looked more closely I saw that it was a very shiny black, had a bulbous abdomen, and had colorful spots on it. I then started thinking, "This is a Black Widow", and "Would I have noticed if it had bitten me while I was drying off?". So, I inspected more closely and found that the spots were more of a brown than a red, and seeing as I couldn't find any marks that would be consistent with a bite I decided I was okay. For a moment, though....I was worried.

I had a similar experience in Australia, age nine. Jellyfish sting. I've never been so terrified.

You're lucky it wasn't a box jellyfish. You're also lucky you've never met a blue-ringed octopus.

Met one, new better than to piss it off. I was a veritable exert on Australian fauna at age nine, and I wasn't going to the beach without an exhaustive search for the little bastards. Besides, in open water over the reef during Christmas I was quite safe from both.

I'm sorry to say i've never been to Australia, so I never got to wrestle with a blue-ringed octopus. I did, however, see a shaved llama, and it resulted in many lulz.
