There are four maps. Rob Brown's prototype (the yellower one showing vegetation) was revealed some time later, but the story of the first three is one I've told in an earlier Q&A thread.

It doesn't show how much it is big, but where it is.

Taco 12-24-2009 02:11 PM

Yeah, I think it's just a 'general location' map and it doesnt have accurate indicators of foliage and vegetation. But the plateaus and mountains on the map are probably accurate.

abe is now! 12-25-2009 11:05 AM

It's like a physical map, wich includes the mean cities: Mudos's map includes the mean places of that country.

enchilado 12-25-2009 04:51 PM

Have you ever thought the colours might represent terrain height rather than type?

Phylum 12-26-2009 03:22 AM

No.

We need a map with outlines, not dots. I fear one may be far away, though, as the borders can't infringe on what will be there at the end of the quintology. I'm estimating a finished map in 2,147 :(

So a physical map... what did I say in my previous post?

What does A.L.I.V.E stand for?

I've got a question that google can't seem to answer for me so, as it's Oddworld related, I figured I'd ask here. As I understand it the engine that was used for the 2D platformer Oddworld games is called the ALIVE Engine. Can anyone tell me what A.L.I.V.E stands for?

Blessed be,

Aware Lifeforms In Virtual Environment Entertainment
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oddworld:_Abe%27s_Oddysee

EDIT: Damn you wikipedia! you've failed me for the last time

Taco 01-02-2010 04:33 AM

So that's what it was. That kinda rings a bell.....

Wil 01-02-2010 04:43 AM

Wrong. It's Aware Lifeforms in Virtual Entertainment.
http://www.oddworld.com/oddworld/com...keyfacts.shtml

Also, Q&A thread.

EDIT: *moved*

And, incidentally, I used to think it was Virtual Environments. It just seemed to make sense. Ho hum.

Scrabaniac 01-02-2010 01:37 PM

i heard about "the brutal ballad of fangus klot" and "sligstorm" etc. they sound good but why can't they make a level editor? or a new game about the last meech ever and abe has to help him rebuild it's species? i have heard of meeches being extinct but the more creatures the merrier! p.s. why are they all carnivores?

Wil 01-02-2010 01:56 PM

When they made their games, Oddworld wanted to make very tight, cinematic, story-driven experiences. A level editor is rather outside that scope, and they were pushing themselves to the limit just to make the games as they are.

A new game from Oddworld now could involve social gaming and user-created content. Lorne Lanning has noticed how successful and engaging these things can be. A future Oddworld game may very well involve Meeches being brought back, but right now the games they're thinking most about aren't based on Oddworld at all.

Most wildlife we know about are carnivores so that they can be enemy characters to Abe.

Taco 01-02-2010 06:14 PM

Which OW species is the tallest? Out of muds, gluks, vykkers, sligs, etc. And how tall would muds be compared to humans?

Wil 01-02-2010 06:54 PM

Abe is 5′8″. Glukkons were originally 7′, but seem to have been updated to between 9′ and 10′. Stranger, Vykkers and Sekto are also about 9′. Outlaws vary, but the larger ones are 12′.

Have fun with imperial measurements, Aussie.

Josh 01-03-2010 02:54 AM

I would have thought that Gloktogi were the tallest.

Dem's some big fuckers. Then again, that picture of Lady Margret does make her seem big.

hidden 01-03-2010 02:57 AM

You learn something new every day. I never knew Abe was so diminutive.

A note: Aussies still use imperial measurements when refering to height. (most of the time, however imperial measurments have a habbit of sticking like filthy chewing gum to one's soul.)

...Not even ice gets it off.

Wil 01-03-2010 04:47 AM

I see. I just remember Alcar bemoaning my use of imperial, as though it's somehow imprecise or inconvertable. Anyway, try a scouring pad. Failing that, a bench grinder.

hidden 01-05-2010 04:50 AM

Ok i was being a bit harsh. Such a pitty I can't use facial expresions to convey a joking or sarcastic theme. Your knowledge was appreciated.
However, I am rather sick of converting units, given my engineering homework there is a hell of a lot of it.

Wil 01-05-2010 05:00 AM

I got your joking attitude. I just continued it.

abe is now! 01-05-2010 08:26 AM

About Gloktigi, what are the species of that family?

Josh 01-05-2010 08:33 AM

Gloktogi, Oktogi and Glukkons.

Here's the size guide:
http://oddworldlibrary.net/archives/...O/CAMO0079.jpg
I thing that second Oktogi is when it attaches itself to a Steef.

abe is now! 01-05-2010 08:46 AM

Thank you, thank you very much.
A spontaneous question that I got now is if a Glukkon turns into an Octigi 0.1, the into an Octigi 0.2 and then into a Gloktigi... is it right?

Josh 01-05-2010 08:47 AM

No. They are of the same genus, not the same species. Thats like a human turning into a monkey.

Bullet Magnet 01-06-2010 04:19 PM

Actually, that would be more like a human turning into another species of human.

used:) 01-06-2010 05:11 PM

Which is why they're in the same family, not genus, or is that still not broad enough? Because family would totally make that comparison legit.

Wil 01-07-2010 02:35 AM

If a taxonomic family on Oddworld stands for the same thing as on Earth, then it would be like any species of hominid turning into any other species of hominid. That's transformation between any of the great apes. We'd have to go up to suborder Haplorrhini to swap between apes and monkeys.

But then maybe Oddworld's taxonomists go by a different scale.

And then again, transformation of individuals between much less related species is possible via the Supernatural Spooce Cannon.

I thought monkeys and humans were both classified as Homonids, in which case, wouldn't it fit with Oktigis and Glukkons?

Josh 01-07-2010 09:15 AM

Wait a second, Pilot and Used:) switched avatars. *Mind is blown*

I'm noy sure I understand. Oktigi is the family. Were you comparing Oktogi and Glukkons like monkeys and humans? Or has my brain fianally melted?

Wil 01-07-2010 09:28 AM

Humans are in the family Hominidae (hominids), monkeys are a paraphyletic group split between numerous families, including Cercopithecidae (cercopithecids), Atelidae (atelids) and Callitrichidae (callitrichids). Along with the great apes and lesser apes. They're all contained within groups of higher rank, but they're different families, and not all hominids.

We were comparing the evolutionary difference between Oktigi and Glukkons to the evolutionary difference between humans and monkeys and finding the analogy lacking.

Crashpunk 01-08-2010 12:32 PM

Quick question. I was watching the AE cutsences and I notist is SoulStorm brew a green liquid or is that just the glass bottle it's in?

Also with the Okrigis (Which I only just found out about) is there a other species of Mudokon or species like Mudokons

Wil 01-08-2010 01:00 PM

I believe that it's a green liquid, despite the orange colour of the AE cover. That's why Brewmaster has green-stained skin, and if I recall correctly there are other green stains about the scenery.

But then the empty bottles are definitely green.

used:) 01-08-2010 04:14 PM

Plus, you can see green, residual brew running down the blind Mudokons' chins.

Lord Stanley 01-14-2010 09:58 AM

Is Molluck still alive? We just see him get zapped at the end of AO and he sits there and sizzles, but could he possibly return?

Xavier 01-14-2010 10:50 AM

Yes he is still alive and will return somewhere in a next chapter of the quintology.

ConceitArturo 01-23-2010 09:41 PM

Oddblog hosts the Lorne and Nate interview....PART ONE??? I read somewhere that there were EIGHT parts, what's with holding back so much of it?

not to sound thankless at all, I was completely mindblown by the scale of all the concepts that lorne discussed in the interview and I think it's an incredible chance....but really, what's the hold up?

Wil 01-24-2010 01:34 AM

http://oddworldlibrary.net/oddblog/s..._Lorne_Lanning

All eight parts are there. Two comes directly below one. Three directly below that. Not sure how you could miss them. You realize you can scroll down website pages, right?

Lord Stanley 01-26-2010 01:24 PM

Will Abe ever return?

Taco 01-26-2010 03:05 PM

Yes, he'll appear in other quintology games I believe. If OddMobb are going to release any this century...

Grieva 01-26-2010 04:35 PM

The art book has lots of HQ frame renders from AO and AE fmvs, were the full fmvs ever made available at those higher resolutions/quality?
