It's time for us to say thanks to Blade for all the vampires he's killed over the years by sending him some holiday cheer. You can send your cards and letters to:

WESLEY TRENT SNIPES
INMATE #43355-018
FCIMCKEAN
FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION
P.O. BOX 8000
BRADFORD,PA16701
Well, how about sending Blade a christmas card?

Mac Sirloin 12-21-2012 06:25 PM

I heard Wesley Snipes is a huge jerk who wasted all of his money on drugs and then didn't pay his taxes. Supposedly there's a scene in Blade 3 (Trinity) where he's standing still with his eyes closed and during filming he wouldn't open them. He just stood there for ten minutes until they agreed to CG his eyes opening in.

JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN—According to alarming reports from international relief agencies operating in Swaziland, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and rebel-held sections of Mali, more than 500,000 people have died so far this month from the ongoing Africa plaguing the region.

"At this point, we are unable to keep up with the flood of victims from the continuing Africa," said World Health Organization director-general Margaret Chan, who called the current Africa the "most urgent and devastating"humanitarian disaster of our time. "By our count, this catastrophic Africa has killed more than 100 million individuals over the past 10 years, and we're seeing thousands more—many of them helpless infants and children—succumbing to Africa by the day."

"And unfortunately," Chan added, "the merciless Africa shows no signs of abating."

Africa, which affects upwards of 40 million new residents annually, has only grown more deadly over the years. According to WHO figures, many of the afflicted die from Africa or Africa-related complications before they even reach the age of 5.

In addition to the staggering number of deaths attributable to the persistent, destructive Africa, roughly 1 billion individuals are now said to be living with the highly lethal continent, and for most there is little hope of recovery.

"Sadly, Africa has been a problem in this area for generations," World Food Program coordinator Jens Dreyer said from his office in Niger, a country that has long been mired in a perpetual state of Africa. "The scale of this disastrous Africa is overwhelming. We're doing what we can to contain it, but it's just so widespread."

"Despite all our efforts, I still see Africa everywhere I look," Dreyer continued. " For those who live here, there's just no avoiding it."

In Mali and Guinea-Bissau, the unrelenting Africa has reportedly turned bloody, wiping out entire villages, eroding even the most basic functions of civil society, and displacing hundreds of thousands of people whom the Africa has left without access to food and water. Additionally, graphic images of violent military crackdowns, vicious border disputes, and outright slaughter confirm that large parts of Egypt, Sudan, and Somalia have once again collapsed into full-scale Africa.

A number of critics, including certain state agencies and nongovernmental organizations, have accused developed countries of offering only token aid, claiming that such nations would prefer to ignore the horrors of the grisly Africa altogether and pretend the continuing Africa simply doesn't exist.

The U.S. government has acknowledged the problem, citing the 10 million women and children who die each year from Africa-linked preventable causes, and maintains it is doing all it can to address the grave humanitarian crisis in the Africa-ravaged region.

"The real tragedy here is that Africa is 100 percent treatable and all but nonexistent in other parts of the world," said State Department spokesman Annette Green, painting a grim, hopeless picture of those who struggle daily with the debilitating continent. "But sadly, for the unfortunate individuals born here amid these horrific conditions, a diagnosis of Africa is effectively a death sentence."

I didn't.

To be honest the only funny part was when I thought it was about a pony having some sort of heavy seizure attack

OANST 12-31-2012 12:29 PM

The funny part is when I drove to Meech's house to cave his skull in because he betrayed my trust.

That actually is pretty funny

Is the final pony.mov video out yet? He said it'd be here around December if I recall correctly.

Varrok 01-01-2013 03:51 AM

It's not out yet. Did you forget to ask *which* December it'd be done?

Just an interesting factoid for you all, courtesy of QI:

If you were to guess that in the Biblical 'feeding of the 5000', 5000 people were fed, you would be wrong. The Bible said 5000 'men' were fed, the women and children were not bothered to be counted because they were not as important.

That's true of most places in which people were counted in the Bible.

For instance, after the exodus from Egypt, the population was counted. But that was actually only the number of men in the appropriate age range for fighting battle, given as 600,000, leading some scholars to suggest that 2-3 million Israelites left Egypt. Which in turn leads other scholars to suggest that the exodus couldn't possibly have happened, as that number of people would have been an impossible logistic arrangement.

But going back to the feeding of the 5000; it somewhat depends on the words used in the original text. Hebrew doesn't have a gender neutral term for 'people', and generally uses the male term for mixed gender groupings. Having said that, there are some terms that are only ever used for groups of men and some terms that can be used for either groups of men or for mixed groups. And without the original Hebrew text, it's impossible to know exactly what was meant.

STM 01-01-2013 07:53 PM

See it's quite interesting to me. I think that the initial point Steven Fry was trying to make (albeit somewhat jokily) was that for a religious text, the Bible - or more specifically in this instance, the Old Testament - is remarkably patriarchal or gender biased. I can't think of the proper word. But then that's really a given because those were the societal norms really. In hindsight it's a bit of an obvious statement. What I really took from it was merely that I never knew more than 5000 people were fed (supposing the story is true).

It's particularly sapid, what you say about the exodus (nearly spelt that exoddus), even 600,000 is a pretty big number of people to orchestrate down such a long journey. Shifting two million people would be insane. I don't profess to know the length or distance of the journey but if I'm correct in saying that they left Egypt entirely, they must have left a lot of people behind! :P

Phylum 01-01-2013 09:51 PM

Using an incredibly rough figure, if 2,000,000 people were to walk single-file only a third of the exodees would have left as the first were arriving.

I acknowledge how much is wrong with that figure, but I had Wolfram Alpha open in a tab and I couldn't help myself.

Yes, but it's still not a very good point. Because (a) it's just to do with the nature of the language and (b) it's not surprising given the culture at the time. Also, (c), it's theoretically possible that only men attended the sermon.

And I suppose there's also (d); the number 5000 was probably made up by Matthew to make it sound more impressive than the few people who actually showed up.

Woah, woah.

You're uh

You're not suggesting the bible lied, are you?

Because that would be terrible.

Nate 01-02-2013 03:34 AM

Okay, I've been doing some Wikipedia-ing this evening.

For one thing, it turns out I always thought the miracle of the loaves and fishes happened at the sermon on the mount. Nope. For the record, that's why I explicitly mentioned Matthew in my last post; as he's the only one that mentions the sermon.

Also, it turns out that the gospels explicitly state that the number (5000 at the first occassion and 4000 on a second occasion mentioned by Mark and Matthew) is only the men and that the women and children were in addition to that number.

So you can ignore my previous posts for the specifics, but they still stand as a general guide for the difficulty of interpretting the gospel truth.

True, if you're regarding them from a scientific/historical point of view. Which I acknowledge you should.

But even from a religious perspective in which the words as written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are the literal gospel truth, you need to take in to account the fact that you're not actually reading their words but a translation. And all translations are effectively also commentaries/interpretations of what the translator thought of the text.
