Whilst I'm worried this is going to turn in to a new religion discussion, how can you possibly hold that a religion is true if its holy book isn't?

STM 08-28-2011 07:08 AM

Oh don't know, I can't profess to understand God's workings and his miracles and all that good stuff, and often I've asked myself the same question you just put forward, I suggested to myself that perhaps Genesis was written for people who couldn't contemplate the Universe on a scale we do today so instead the start of the Old Testament was written to summarise what was made, what sin was and God's wrath/ love.

shut the fuck up about god, for the love of god.

reading Everything's Eventual by Stephen King, but it's taking a fucking millennia seeing as my concentration keeps going up and down like a goddamn yo-yo.

Alf Shall Rise 10-11-2011 03:00 PM

Currently reading Crime and Punishment. I'm not that far into it but so far I think it's pretty interesting.

StrangerEastwood 10-16-2011 11:09 PM

I am reading the Strain by Chuck Hogan and film director, Guillermo Del Toro. So, the love child of Vampires, Outbreak, Pan's Labyrinth and The Town. xP

Crashpunk 10-20-2011 03:14 PM

I've been recommend Harry Potter by my mates who are mad on it. I really don't want to read them.

Anyway, i've started to re-read The Hobbit.

StrangerEastwood 10-20-2011 03:22 PM

Yeah, theyre not for everyone. I love em, but eh. And good for you, I love Tolkien...even if he tends to ramble on and on and on and...You catch my drift. I will never forgive him for that stretch in fellowship with Tom mother fucking bombadil. Ugh.

Wings of Fire 10-20-2011 06:24 PM

The Harry Potter books are fantastic kid's books, amazing young teen books and rather flawed older teen books. The demographic progresses with the series.

Nate 10-21-2011 03:43 AM

Are you saying that the books meant for older teens are flawed or that they are or flawed as books for older teens?

Mudokon_Master 10-21-2011 03:51 AM

Or is he saying that the young teen books flawed the older teen ones?

Depends if you think copious amounts of angst, plot contrivances out of nowhere and spending half of the last book running around england arguing are standards for older-teen fiction.

Mac Sirloin 10-21-2011 09:35 AM

I'm reading Ravener: The Omnibus. It's three Warhammer 40K novels about some badass from The Inquisition wrapped into a HUGE softcover. I'm also reading Fool by Christopher Moore again. Love that book.

STM 10-21-2011 09:40 AM

That reminds me, I need to get back to that PDF of Dawn of War I was reading!

StrangerEastwood 10-21-2011 10:36 AM

I'm reading the Dark Tower series again

Wings of Fire 10-21-2011 10:55 AM

Be sure to tell me if Wolves of the Callah, Song of Suzzanah and The Dark Tower are just as disappointing the second time round.

StrangerEastwood 10-21-2011 10:59 AM

lol theyr not that bad. I rather enjoyed them, though the first four are indeed better. Especially The Wastelands. Blane is a pain.

T-nex 10-21-2011 11:13 AM

I really didn't like the HP books from number 5 and onwards... I never read the last one.
I don't remember if it was the 5th or 6th... But Harry just turned so... angsty all of a sudden. Like it wasn't progressive at all, and it just kind of turned me off of the story.

It was the fifth.

StrangerEastwood 10-21-2011 11:31 AM

Well thats teens for ya. lol Especially one's that are fighting true evil. lol

Wings of Fire 10-21-2011 12:06 PM

It pissed me off that Sirius's death could have been averted at least ten times over had Harry not acted like a stupid little wanker the whole way through the book.

STM 10-21-2011 12:16 PM

The whole thing is a big fat stupid poop. Once I turned like...8 I grew right on out of HP.

Wings of Fire 10-21-2011 12:32 PM

But but the second, third and fourth books were actually good.

And the fifth and sixth ones weren't that bad.

No comment on the seventh. I hate that book.

It's called puberty, woman!

Bullet Magnet 10-21-2011 01:53 PM

Who didn't go through that at puberty?

Apart from me. I started and am still going through all the teenage emotional bullshit several years after puberty. That's not right at all.

I just piked up Terry Pratchett's Snuff. Well, it is excellent so far. But when excellence is the norm, is disappointment the only other possibility and surprise? Hmm.

So... his writing style hasn't been negatively affected by the scribe?

This was my main concern, though it's pretty much a guarenteed buy anyway.

STM 10-21-2011 02:18 PM

Oh, anyone read the Discworld series that might recommend it?

Yes.

Start at Moving Pictures. It gets much much better as you go along.

STM 10-21-2011 02:22 PM

Ah, is there an order then? I thought I'd start at The Colour of Magic if I did pick the series up.

MeechMunchie 10-21-2011 02:38 PM

First I read was Mort. The outsider's perspective helps.

The first few books are rather fair-to-good (Though I'm sure BM will disagree). Basically there's about four or five plot threads going on in Discworld and in the first few books it's...

Colour of Magic (Rincewind is introduced)
The Light Fantastic (Rincewind book)
Equal Rites (Granny Weatherwax is introduced)
Mort (Death is properly introduced)
Sorcery (Rincewind book)
Wyrd Sisters (Granny Weatherwax/Witches book)
Pyraminds (Standalone)
Guards Guards!! (Sam Vimes and The Watch are introduced)
Eric (Rincewind book, arguably the worst book in the series)
Moving Pictures (Archchancellor Ridcully is introduced. The series suddenly goes from good to excellent)

Basically, you will have to read the first few books anyway to get a good handle on character introductions, but I read the first twenty five or so books achromatically anyway and I didn't mind.
