You wouldn't want people shoving for room on a precarious platform high in the sky or over lava.

Speak for yourself.

Phylum 09-05-2011 11:40 PM

I have school that day, so count me out.

Wil 09-06-2011 02:16 AM

Are there any more supplies the Exoddus Portal Room could do with before we exoddus?

T-nex 09-06-2011 03:31 AM

i wanna come D=

dripik 09-06-2011 05:04 AM

Nostalgia. This is how Genesis looked like on the first day.

Max returning to Genesis after a quest for clay.

Wil 09-06-2011 05:06 AM

What's that coming out of my crotch?

T-nex 09-06-2011 05:07 AM

That IS your crotch.

dripik 09-06-2011 07:49 AM

That, or a weirdly glitched pair of leather trousers.

Also, I expect it'll take some time for us to agree on the time for our exodus to Exodus Settlement after 1.8 is released. If that happens, could we all agree not to go exploring the new stuff on the server?

Manco 09-06-2011 11:17 AM

Sure, I’m down for that. I logged in last night just to add some supplies, I probably won’t be logging in again until the Exoddus.

Havoc 09-06-2011 02:04 PM

So do we have a general idea or layout for the new settlement yet? I'd prefer to actually build a joint effort instead of everyone running off to their own projects again.

Manco 09-06-2011 02:25 PM

I think it’d be best to wait until we see what the New World looks like before we decide what to build.

Splat 09-06-2011 06:16 PM

Yeah, if we have to contend with mountains any plans made for a flat area will be useless. We'll build a communal building or two when we get there and plan from there. Once we see what we've got, we can plan on the forums what to do with it.

Also, I'm desperately curious to know who did this:
http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1315358390
(And how on Earth they managed it - that castle is, I think, every bit as isolated-on-a-tiny-island-in-the-middle-of-a-lava-sea-without-overhangs-or-bridges as it looks.)

Manco 09-06-2011 11:44 PM

Israphel did it.

dripik 09-06-2011 11:59 PM

The bridge might have been removed after completion. The castle is a bit like what DH would build, reminds me of his style... Or maybe someone wanted us to believe exactly that...

Crashpunk 09-07-2011 12:42 AM

I'm so glad i didn't miss everyone moving to Exoddus, i can't wait to join you all and Beta 1.8 is going to be good.

Havoc 09-07-2011 02:02 AM

I know one thing, Endermen are going to freak me the fuck out. The second I see one I will kill it every time.

Splat 09-07-2011 10:05 AM

Hmm, if they don't start attacking until you look away, could you shoot one to death without it doing anything?

Release date as far as I know is tomorrow. So say 8PM GMT+1 tomorrow (Britain is currently on GMT+1 'cus of British Summer Time)? Or would earlier than that be better? (It'd have to be before 6 for me.)

Get your kit ready!

All those attending the grand opening of Exoddus Settlement, please bring...
  • 1 minecart* (for travelling the rail in the Nether),
  • 3+ stacks of cobble,
  • 1 stack dirt/gravel,
  • 1 bed,
  • 1 stack torches,
  • 3+ saplings (preferably birch or pine) in case we get a desert or plain,
  • 1/2+ stack wood, or 1+ stack planks, for building chests, signs, crafting tables, sticks, doors, etc.
  • 1/2+ stack coal, for additional torches and fuel,
  • Food to your own satisfaction (bearing in mind if your hunger reaches 0 you lose all but half a heart immediately, and we don't know how long that takes or how much hunger food restores),
  • Anything else you feel you need: tools, weapons, iron, map ingredients**, etc.,
  • Herobrine.
Be prepared to share items in your survival kit with others, and for them to be used for the building of communal facilities (such as portal shelter, dormitories, storage chests and signs).
Since biomes are getting such a big change, we may get an environment we really don't expect, so be prepared!

Unless the Portal comes out somewhere ludicrous (such as the middle of an ocean or, so help us, somewhere already generated) we will settle where we land, as if spawning for the first time.

The portal heads north-west through the Nether, so more new chunks will lie to the north west (assuming the sun sets east-to-west and maps are aligned to the east, Mr Gravel Shore). Exploration of new chunks should wait until after Exoddus Settlement is a secure and safe place for us all to live. Town planning and assignation of land for personal building at Exoddus Settlement will begin after construction of portal shelter and dormitories.

Finally, expect bugs. Don't flash about anything too rare, just in case something untoward occurs due to bugs.

*Five iron ingots in a 'U' shape.
**A compass*** surrounded by eight paper****. Remember, maps centre on the crafting table where they're made, so don't make one in advance.
*** 1 redstone surrounded by 4 iron ingots.
**** Three reeds in a row.

Wil 09-07-2011 10:08 AM

Before 6 I'm likely to still be working. 8 lets me get home, eat, and return to work (yes, I'm sad).

Manco 09-07-2011 10:10 AM

That sounds fine to me.

dripik 09-07-2011 10:50 AM

I've just remembered that DH is away hiking. According to his blog, he'll be back around Friday or so. I'm just saying because we probably don't want to leave him out of our exodus, mainly because of his contributions to the server world, and the possibility of him recording our journey.

For me, pretty much any evening of the week would be OK. Sunday especially.

EDIT: Oh, and in case someone needs a bit of inspiration for MC settlements, go and check out what happened to Survival Mountain. Take the Red line to Nile Lair, then transfer to Yellow and go past Buncible Compound.

Splat 09-07-2011 11:00 AM

Friday would have to be after 9 for me, but I don't mind waiting for DH's sake if no-one else does; he has contributed a lot and it would be cool for it to be filmed.

Havoc 09-07-2011 11:01 AM

I'm gonna try to update the server as soon as the update becomes available, but as usual there might be a small delay.

Manco 09-07-2011 11:03 AM

Yeah, I’m fine waiting for DH too. I’ve got tons of free time anyway.

Splat 09-07-2011 11:13 AM

If you go exploring before the exodus to Exoddus but after the update, don't go north or west.

Havoc 09-07-2011 12:54 PM

Guys I'd like to put up a small status image, either in the first post of this topic or in my signature, so we can more easily see how many people are online. It seems the busyness of the server is a big incentive for people to stick around and currently most of us are leaving as soon as we realize no-one is online, which is kind of a shame.

Only thing is that such an image will make the IP adres public and I know some of you are still hesitant about that, even though all security holes have since been patched up.

However I think that the pro's outweight the (non-existant) cons in this case. I think a status image can easily bring some more life into the server. Something like this:

http://cache.www.gametracker.com/ser...b_560_95_1.png

or this

http://cache.www.gametracker.com/ser...FFF_000000.png

Just to clarify on the security changes of the server since the 'incident':

1. Backups are made daily and stored on the server. If the world becomes corrupted somehow we'd lose 24 hours at the most.

2. I download the latest backup regularly (once a week on average, sometimes more). If the entire server decides to crap out we wouldn't lose months worth of work.

3. The server validates every user that tries to log in against the Minecraft.net user database. This means that someone can only log in if they own a legal copy of the game and has a valid account. Fake accounts (like the hacker using Notch's name) are therefor no longer possible. In fact, if the Minecraft.net server is down you can't log in at all.

4. The server uses a whitelist so only valid accounts of our own choosing are allowed to log in. Not even Notch could get in if he wanted to without being on the whitelist (which he happens to be, but that's beside the point).

All these things make it a little too paranoid to keep the IP a secret. There are hundreds of servers who have their IP open to the public and it rarely becomes a problem. And some of them have hundreds of slots and players to keep track of. We only have 15 at the most to deal with.

So all those who are opposed right now to a public IP, I'd like you to reconsider for the sake of the server. Right now I'm still the only one paying for it, and I don't mind that at all, I can spare the cash, but it's kind of a waste if the server is only populated for 3 out of 30 days. My 2 cents so far.

Splat 09-07-2011 01:20 PM

You make a convincing argument.

Havoc 09-07-2011 01:55 PM

Thank you.

Also, holy crap I just accidentally triggered the harvesting system in that grain farm. The lag from that thing is fucking insane, it's maxing out the server's resources. Can someone make it so that it doesn't do the entire field at once and locks the server up? I don't think our host is too happy with this sort of lag spikes on a regular basis. :p

STM 09-07-2011 02:02 PM

If you're worried about server population, open it to the public but start off anyone who logs on and as a sort of trial or probation class, then once they are trusted, give them building rights etc. That's what most servers do.

Havoc 09-07-2011 02:04 PM

We're not opening it to the public, it's just that some people fear that the server will fall victim to abuse if the IP is publicly known, which won't be the case or even possible. That's my point.

STM 09-07-2011 02:20 PM

Fair enough, just a suggestion is all.
