Does anyone know if Love and Peace is worth buying?

I wouldn't know, but there's this classic work called War and Peace that is considered, well, a classic.

It's a bit of a headache though. Only recommended if you have a real passion for history.

STM 07-12-2011 10:38 AM

Sorry War and Peace is what I meant, but I do like history. Is it fictitious though?

Wings of Fire 07-12-2011 10:41 AM

Fictional characters, real setting.

I've not read it myself, but I've heard after the halfway point it goes really deep into the philosophy of history and the nature of, well, war and peace. Apparently that disrupts the flow of the plot, but it's also why the novel is so well regarded amongst literature and history buffs.

It's a very advanced text though.

STM 07-12-2011 10:45 AM

I might get it, probably not until Christmas though. Financial trouble be a bitch.

OANST 07-13-2011 07:51 AM

Picked up A Dance With Dragons yesterday. Pretty good so far.

MeechMunchie 07-26-2011 05:32 AM

I read Neuromancer.

I can see why it's a cult classic. I mean I can see why it's a cult classic, rather than being loved by everybody. I liked it though. It would make a darned good movie.

Phylum 07-27-2011 01:32 AM

Going Postal.

It's really good so far. It has potential to get better and I'm expecting it to follow through. I'm probably going to read The Light Fantastic after this.

Wings of Fire 07-27-2011 05:15 AM

Going Postal is easily one of the best.

Not too keen on any of them pre-Guards Guards though.

Nate 07-27-2011 11:37 PM

I didn't like Going Postal. It started off well enough, but after building up the importance of the post office and the piles of mail therein, it burns down and there are no consequences and the matters are never raised again

Strike Witch 07-28-2011 12:36 AM

I liked Going Postal, though I prefer Thud, Colour of Magic-Light Fantastic, The Last Continent, and Monstrous Regiment.

To be honest though, I think he blew away all his Discworld stuff with Nation, but I haven't read Unseen Academicals or anything else new.

MeechMunchie 07-28-2011 05:56 AM

Unseen Academicals was pretty good, it was quite cinematic. It's got Orcs in it. It also features an excruciating scene where a man wipes a lemon slice over knife cuts in his face.

Not so sure about the football pseudoreligion though.

Crashpunk 07-29-2011 09:03 AM

I've been slowly getting back into manga recently. My mate lent me a couple of volumes of Bleach and i'm loving them so far. I've missed the manga artstyle :3

Wings of Fire 07-29-2011 11:47 AM

Urgh Bleach.

Urgh.

Nate 07-29-2011 01:28 PM

Unseed Academicals started well, but didn't maintain the energy. I really liked A Hat Full Of Sky, though.

Mac Sirloin 07-31-2011 07:30 PM

Just started reading All The Pretty Horses, by Cormac McCarthy. I just can't put it down.

Strike Witch 08-03-2011 12:43 AM

Just finished Kevin J Anderson's Terra Incognita Trilogy.

Avoid that shit like the plague.

The ending made me so fucking mad.

The Border Trilogy are both my sister and my pop's favourite books.

Urgh Bleach.

Urgh.

Whats wrong with it? I find it to be pretty good for a Manga.

MarsMudoken 08-05-2011 03:11 PM

I can't really find anything to read these days, but once I find enough quarters I think I'll get Mogworld.

It's overly drawn-out, badly underused characters, forgets plot hooks, deus ex machinas out the wazoo, the artist is really slack on backgrounds and the climaxes are nonsensical.

Naruto isn't much better, the only good manga of the Big Three is One Piece.

Wings of Fire 08-06-2011 12:22 AM

Bleach is very good for six volumes, then okay for the next ten, then shit.

Naruto is really good for one volume, then good for the next sixteen, then it gradually went downhil until I didn't care anymore.

Crashpunk 08-08-2011 06:17 AM

I do find that they do introduce so many characters into it and expect you to remember them all.

Also Orihime's Power is fucking stupid.

just started reading the bible today, I read the first 15 chapters of genises and found it very confusing, especially the part were noah makes burn't offerings right after getting out of the ark, I wonder which species died as a result of that since there was only two of every animal, or was it seven I'm not quite sure, also there was something about limiting mans days to a hundred and twenty years and after that there were people who lived for over 400 years, has there been anyone other than biblical people who have lived more than a hundred and twenty years?

penn and teller (well, penn) said the fastest way to become an athiest was to read the bible, I'm beginning to understand what they meant

There were only two of each unclean (i.e. non-kosher) animal. There were seven of the clean/kosher animals, specifically so that Noah could sacrifice some of them. And eat them, too. Tradition has it that humanity was vegetarian before the flood, but only started eating meat from Noah onwards.

*moves this post and previous from the Death thread to this one*

I read the whole Bible minus psalms but I do need to read it again because I was at the age were it didn't all sink in. Genesis really got me, it contradicts itself in the first chapter and then keeps on doing it throughout. Furthermore I wouldn't hold much to the flood. Oh and if you notice, God created the Universe from nothing....but he needed a rib from Adam to make Eve. That's why I say God created the Big Bang or something. ^.^

It didn't say that he needed the rib to create Eve. Just that he chose to use the rib, probably for some ineffable reason.

STM 08-28-2011 04:40 AM

Perhaps...still, the creation according to Genesis, was in my opinion used for a simpler people than us as a means of telling the story of creation.
