I will personally shit over anyone who says that Epicloud wasn't a great album. Epicloud delivered exactly what Devin said he was going to deliver, even more perhaps. He has created a more accessible album without compromising what his music is about.

Not too mention that Save Our Now and Angel is probably two of the best songs he's ever done... in fact;

Epiclouder is awesome too, but I always find myself listening to Whoa No as shit load more than others.

I think neither of us said it wasn't a great album, we just said it wasn't on par on others, by OUR standards. I personally think it's a rather good rock album, but I prefer the heavier approach Devin makes to music. I know he wants to work on other genres, types and different moods of music, but that doesn't mean I'll always like his stuff. I greatly enjoyed Ghost, but I prefer Ziltoid. That's how it is. Still, Epiclouder takes the cake for me. By the way, have you listened to "Epicloud", "Cry Forever" and "Take My Ego"?

Mr. Bungle 01-19-2013 02:23 PM

I don't think it's a great album. Pretty average by Townsend standards, if you ask me.

Phylum 01-19-2013 10:06 PM

This is the kind of thing I want to emulate in a composition at some point this year. I was playing around with an idea earlier, but it was rubbish. It came out overly corny just like every other attempt I've made.

Such a perfect song. That might be my favourite Devy album.

Steamer_KING 01-20-2013 06:22 PM

"Away" is my favourite track on Accelerated Evolution, followed by:

"Away" is a kinda of soft spot for me, I simply love instrumentals, because that's all I care about on music, the way instruments talk to you, without any words spoken, and what you feel about it.

Mr. Bungle 01-20-2013 06:34 PM

I think Storm is my favourite. It's just so emotional, the vocal delivery is legendary.

The best thing is when good vocal piece can use words to enhance a melody.

Surf's Up by Brian Wilson is the perfect example of this, plus I love sharing the song. It's amazing music but when you listen the words are complete nonsense. They let the music tell the story while they just make the right sounds to go with the melody.

None of the words in the entire album make any sense, really. There are some fantastic lines nonetheless. It's all very effective with the psychedelic feel of the album. Everyone who likes Pet Sounds and/or any of the Beetles stuff from around then should buy the original SMiLE sessions. It's tragic that it was never finished off and released.

Indeed, his voice works are really good. I've showed them to a friend of mine who is studying Music Theory in Hamburg and he was blown away with Ziltoid, of how could Devin applied Metal with Opera Vocals in such a good way. He instantly became a fan.

Also, I really like this one:

That's also true, I've heard many songs that the lyrics simply didn't meant a thing, BUT changed how I perceived the song/music itself. I think that's a better technique than just simply "read a poem" type of song. I'm not saying they're bad or anything like that, I have a couple of songs that I really, REALLY like the lyrics, but for me, music it's all about instruments. Maybe because I grew listening to my grandfather playing guitar by itself.

Phylum 01-20-2013 07:32 PM

Er, what? Your grandpa used to play guitar to you so you like listening to music more than just listening to the words?

Mr. Bungle 01-20-2013 07:33 PM

I also prefer the music over the lyrics. If the lyrics are shit I generally don't mind as long as the music is good. At the same time, if the lyrics are good but the music is bad I won't bother listening.

Since I was born, my grandpa always played guitar for me, I was a very energetic kid and his music seemed to calm me in ways my mother or my father couldn't, you know the rocking bed and all that. So, as growing up, I always asked my grandfather to play guitar for me and as I learned with him, I grew up just mainly focusing in the instruments in music, to the point where I could know his mood just by the way he played. My grandfather loved "Fado", a traditional music style from Portugal, and improvised very much, so I could identify his mood, since it was a song from THAT moment. I simply cannot explain this any better and I'm sorry Phylum, if my words aren't enough to express my main focusing in instruments on music.

Anyone that actually listens to music feels that way.

Wings of Fire 01-21-2013 02:53 AM

I, uh, can't think of many cases where the music is worse than the lyrics. Reason being that most musicians are musicians before they are poets.

Phylum 01-21-2013 02:57 AM

I would cite lots of popular songs I hate too much to know the names of, but I suppose that's more a matter of personal taste.

Wings of Fire 01-21-2013 03:00 AM

If you're talking about rap, then taking that kind of approach to appreciate rap is wrong to begin with.

If you're talking about other kinds of mainstream music (In all parts of the spectrum up to and including death metal) then I stand by what I said. The music may be terrible, but the lyrics are juvenile and trite to at least match it.

Finally decided to check out The Money Store after hating Exmilitary. Needless to say, Death Grips have grown on me. Massive step up from their first album.

Yup.

Mr. Bungle 01-23-2013 10:41 AM

Apparently those guys are absolutely terrifying live.

Phylum 01-23-2013 03:39 PM

This is an amazing version of an amazing song. I was transcribing the vocal lines the other day and I realised something awful and really unprofessional about this recording that I'm surprised I'd never heard before.

Try listening to it through twice in a row.

I mean, I never went to this kind of "concert", so I don't know what to expect...

This is a great waking up song. And a great song all around.

OANST 01-26-2013 09:11 AM

Message read on the bathroom wall, "I don't feel at all like I fall." What a weirdly beautiful thing to say.

Mr. Bungle 01-26-2013 09:17 AM

And we're losing all touch, losing all touch, building a desert.

Slog Bait 01-26-2013 02:15 PM

Modest Mouse's music is always either a hit or miss for me. I can't really decide how much I like them.

And now for something loud.

Mr. Bungle 01-26-2013 02:25 PM

Everything they did up to and including The Moon and Antarctica is fantastic. I don't like the stuff that came after quite as much, but it's not bad.

Wings of Fire 01-27-2013 09:46 AM

Definitely up there in my favourite soundtracks. This show has so much fucking style.

PS: I'm sure we had a movie/tv soundtrack thread, but it seems to have gone'd.

scrabface 01-27-2013 06:21 PM

fooled around with FL and yes that's a close up of a vagina
