That one isn't as bad. It's a cluttered mess with grossly varying pixel densities, but it's an improvement over the Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff quality of the first.

The color scheme is more consistent as well – it’s kinda made me start thinking about doing a grey/cyan color scheme.
|
Doesn't really fit well with the title though, does it?
|
I’m not saying the design is good, but I like the color scheme.
I could go into a lot of detail regarding the design but it would be mean. |
The colour scheme is a bit too similar to our current Industrial theme.
Question: Should you come up with a colour scheme for the page elements first then come up with a banner, or come up with a banner that you like then match the page elements to it? |

Either works, really. From what I understand, most of the graphics are going to be hand done. If we were just cutting and pasting junk like pupbenny's banner, it would probably be easier to do the latter. How we're going about the project, however, is flexible enough for us to do either with ease.

P.S. Sorry for double post. I was going to edit my previous post and paste this in that but accidentially pressed send.... |

I think the problem is that if you just keep showing half-arsed and self-admittedly slapdash PNGs, no one is going to take you seriously any way, Pupbuddy.

Pup, what everyone is trying to say is that, while we appreciate your effort to put banner "prototypes" together, we neither need nor want this yet. As we've just said, we'll probably work on the banner around a colour scheme that isn't even decided on yet. Your attempts also resemble something that was photoshopped together without too much thought or effort. I'm sorry if you've put either of those into them, but maybe you're just not the right person to do this kind of thing. I know I'm certainly not.

There's just way too much 'stuff' in that picture.
Take a look at the banners in each of the existing themes. First of all, the words 'ODDWORLD FORUMS' must be the main part of the image. People shouldn't need to search to find the name of the site. Secondly, each banner only has one or two main picture elements. For instance, in Industrial Theme there is a slig on the left and a snoozer on the right. There are two other pictures (Splinterz and a glukkon), but they're very much in the background and don't stand out. There is a clear geometric seperation between the slig and glukkon on the left and the region of the picture showing Splinterz. All of these elements combine to make it an attractive, but unobtrusive banner. Also, you haven't considered where the links above and below the banner will be placed. |
no pupbenny, listen to me, it's great! i'm the nice one, believe me, you need to finish this skin. this skin will be amazing. not that it isn't already amazing, of course.
yes finish the skin, pupbenny. finish the skin. it will be a shining beacon representative of this forums combined achievements. it will be glorious. |

Just to keep folks updated, I've been working on a simple CSS framework to use for layouts. It's not finished yet but I like where it's going, so I'll probably be sharing it soon.
Speaking of sharing, I'm wondering how best to keep things from getting disorganized. We need a central area to keep resource files together and to ensure everybody's working from the most up to date versions. |
We should call it the Hub. That's a cool name. Make a thread and ask Nate to close it and make it sticky. That would be really simple.
|
I am not naming anything after your favorite TV station.
That said, I was thinking about using GitHub. But I don't know if anyone else would be interested. |
It's not that (there's really only one shw I like on the Hub, and it isn't Littlest Pet Shop), it's just a cool name. Technically it should be called 'Nepsotic's Hub' because it was My idea.
|
I'm fine with it being called GitHub because it was Nep's idea.
|
In case you're not just being obtuse and don't know what GitHub is: https://github.com/
Not that exciting, I know. |
Update: here’s the work I have done on the framework so far:
Grid structure CSS Typography CSS As you can see it’s only basic at the moment, but functional. You can see on the first demo that there is a built-in mobile layout for the grid which kicks in when the browser window is less than 768px wide (resize your browser window to see it in action). There’s also a couple of scripts running to aid compatibility between browsers, specifically older versions of IE and a script which removes the need to add browser-specific CSS. So everything should look consistent no matter your browser; if it’s not, screencap it and let me know. (in case you’re wondering, the dotted lines in the background are a baseline grid plugin for helping design the typography; as you can see I haven’t yet put too much thought into it) |
Well, it's coming along nicely. This one might even get finished.
