I didn't bother with most of the movies because, again, I don't like superheroes. I didn't even want to see Avengers, it just ended up happening because the movie we originally wanted to see was no longer playing.

:

And it bored you because it was a risk free affair? Really now? You said yourself that it probably couldn't have been better. If Marvel didn't care and just wanted to churn out money, they wouldn't have made it as good as they did. They obviously care. Whedon obviously cared. They made a damn fine movie.
No. It bored me because I don't like superheroes.
It being risk-free was only a minor contributing factor to my overall opinion. Yes, it was as good as it could be, but it also could have been utter shit and still broken the box office. Look at the Transformers franchise. The fact that it wasn't utter shit was a bonus but irrelevant to my point. It was a safe movie from the off.

Maybe I'm just a total hipster, but I'm usually not interested in seeing movies that the entire population has already hoisted on a pedestal before it's even been released. Those kind of movies are polarizing for me, because you're almost obligated to be part of the cultural phenomenon, and I don't like feeling like I have to see a movie.

I could actually forgo this argument entirely by using the "It's just a big, dumb, fun popcorn movie. Lighten up" fallback. Yet even when I tried to do this, I still didn't like it.

Daxter King 10-27-2012 11:31 AM

Thor was fucking terrible, it was a two hour commercial for the Avengers. Cannot believe when it came out people claimed it was one of the better superhero movies.

I get what Sekto is saying when he says it was risk free, I mean, just having Iron Man in it meant it was going to be a financial success already. And I wouldn't call The Avengers a damn fine movie, the movie is the definition of serviceable. It's about an inch deep in all of its plot and emotion, and the action is merely fan service for the most part.

Sekto Springs 10-27-2012 01:48 PM

I'm sick of being called "hipster" or "jaded" or the many misused synonyms whenever I don't like something that everyone else likes. Part of why I don't like them is because I'm fucking expected to. That's how it was with The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, Avatar. Guess what? Didn't see TDKR, Inception was meh, and Avatar fucking sucked. Sue me.

Varrok 10-27-2012 01:53 PM

Hipster.

Didn't see TDKR, Inception was meh, and Avatar fucking sucked. Sue me.
Totally the same with me

Being called a contrarian is my favorite, my opinion isn't aligned with others, so I must be purposefully disagreeing for the sake of it!

Sekto Springs 10-27-2012 02:21 PM

Most of the people who criticize my tastes aren't smart enough to know words like contrarian. Neither is chrome, apparently *adds to dictionary*.

Mr. Bungle 10-27-2012 04:50 PM

Avatar did suck. I don't think there are many here who will dispute that.

Inception was kind of boring, yeah, but not too bad. I find most of Christopher Nolan's movies to be very overrated, really.

Well, story-wise yes, but visually?

:

It was recommended to me so many times by my brother and friends, they say it's amazing. I tried to watch it once but fell asleep, not because it was boring, I was just really tired, maybe I'll give it another shot.

Mr. Bungle 10-27-2012 05:21 PM

The visuals were pretty, sure, but a movie shouldn't have to rely on 3D and special effects to be good. I watched it on regular DVD and almost fell asleep.

Strike Witch 10-28-2012 03:08 AM

I kind of stopped watching superhero movies a while ago.

Just no interest.

GLaDOS 10-28-2012 10:33 AM

On my first viewing of Thor I found it actually really funny, looking back it was just boring.
I've not seen any of the Iron Man films, maybe I should, the third one looks decent.

To stay on topic, I just say the sneak peak of "Bravest Warriors" (Created by Pen Ward), and I can't wait, it'll be on Youtube only though on Cartoon Hangover, they've got a comic series coming out and I've ordered the first.

I also saw Smosh's parody song for AC3 and it's catchy, and I saw "Mitt Romney Style" that's the only decent Gangnam Style variation.

MeechMunchie 10-28-2012 11:50 AM

Every supehero movie ever made has been entirely average and you're all fagots.

Except for Watchmen, but that wasn't about heroes per se...

EDIT: Oh #7000 whaddayaknow

Ridg3 10-28-2012 12:39 PM

Just watched Hocus Pocus. Such a wave of nostalgia.

Sekto Springs 10-28-2012 12:40 PM

That's such a timeless, cheesy halloween flick. I love the fuck out of it.

Wings of Fire 10-28-2012 12:43 PM

Virgins!

I reckon that film has Jason Marsden's best performance along with the dub of Spirited Away. He made the film for me when I was little.

Nepsotic 10-28-2012 02:03 PM

Halloween H2O

So that's like, what, the 50th Halloween film?

I personally liked Robert Downey Jnr best out of all the Avengers / Marvel hero actors. Mainly because of his sarcasm and funny dialogue.

I saw Skyfall today. It was exceptionally good and has some brilliant visual effects, particularly in the colour tones for some scenes. I also saw Looper which is fantastic, if you like Sci-Fi and/or Bruce Willis and/or Time Travel, it'll be right up your alley. Going to see Taken 2 on Wednesday. I'll let you know how that goes.

Not related to movies exactly but I've also been watching Walking Dead, 24 and Homeland. All exceptional series with a nice running narrative and good action segments.

Nepsotic 10-28-2012 03:03 PM

The new episode of Misfits. It was pretty could, but if I had to pick one of the original 5 to go through to the end I wouldn't have picked Curtis.

Does anybody here have a clue about what I'm talking about?

E: "It was pretty could"? I have no idea what the fuck I was trying to say there so I'll just leave it in.

MeechMunchie 10-28-2012 03:58 PM

I watched two episodes of Misfits, after much assurance that it wasn't run-of-the-mill adolescent sex-obsessed drivel.

It was.

Nepsotic 10-28-2012 04:05 PM

It isn't, it really fucking isn't.

Mac Sirloin 10-29-2012 07:53 AM

I watched some of it on Youtube. Better than some of the shit my niece watched but not by much.\

And how would you know? You're like 14 right? 14 year olds are just good for manual labour and an emergency food source. So either get to the mine or your're going in my oven with Mr. Bungles remains.

OANST 10-29-2012 08:02 AM

I saw Argo last night. I liked it well enough.

Hey, what are my remains doing in your oven?

Mac Sirloin 10-29-2012 10:43 PM

Oh nothing
I was just saving you IN THE FUTURE!

But I messed up and look just don't get too attached to your bones when you turn 45. You're not dying or anything, but you do not have any bones. No bones whatsoever.

Mr. Bungle 10-29-2012 10:52 PM

Oh

Well, I've always wanted to be a blob.

Nepsotic 10-30-2012 07:36 AM

Just a heads up: Nobody should ever watch Ren and Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon.

OANST 10-30-2012 07:39 AM

Very true. It's bad.

Sekto Springs 10-30-2012 07:50 AM

That show represents John K. unhinged, without having to be sneaky or clever in any way to get stuff passed the radar. The show makes perfect sense if you know how misogynistic, racist, hate-filled, and psychotic the man really is.

Great animator, terrible person.

Wings of Fire 10-30-2012 07:56 AM

I read his blog. Entries I like to entries I hate are pretty much a 1:1 ratio.

Nepsotic 10-30-2012 07:58 AM

John K had a blog?

Sure he does. I've linked to it once before in a discussion about Dreamworks, so I'm surprised that you, mister trawler, didn't know.

Nepsotic 10-30-2012 08:23 AM

This is my favourite british sitcom of all time.

Hehe, embedding was disabled on this video, aren't I sneaky?

Edit: FUCK!

Varrok 10-30-2012 08:24 AM

Now make it avaliable in my country

Mr. Bungle 10-30-2012 08:24 AM

I watched the first season of Peep Show a little while back. It was really funny. Great show. Need to watch more.

You are a bad human being.

Personally I think Avatar is an amazing movie. The story is great, the visuals are amazing and the music is perfect. I think I saw it a total of 3 times at the movies.
In terms of everyone else in the world, Avatar is most widely liked movie ever, as it made the most money. :fuzwink: 2.8 Billion dollars!
Bottom line, AVATAR did NOT suck and NEVER will! :fuzmad:

This is as bullshit as saying that only music in the charts is worth listening to. Piss-poor argument.

Can't comment, because I haven't seen it, nor do I feel an desire to.

I watched Man Bites Dog. I like that film.

No, you are for

A) Liking that piece of shit movie
B) Seeing that piece of shit movie three times
C) Assuming gross matters
D) Thinking I'm a bad human being based on my opinion on that piece of shit movie

It really was shit.

Varrok 11-02-2012 02:25 AM

It's not really the most awful movie ever, but I kind of feel sorry for you that you had to watch it three times

Mr. Bungle 11-02-2012 02:26 AM

Nah, it isn't, I was just feeling defensive and tired. It was pretty shit, though.

I didn't say it is the only movie worth watching, I said it is the most widely liked movie. I used precise wording because it is not the best movie, it has simply been liked by the largest amount of people. It is not a "piss-poor argument."

Gross does matter in the large scale (population wise) rating of the movie. No movie can be 'shit' if it made the largest largest amount of money.
:

()
No, you are {a bad human being} for thinking I'm a bad human being based on my opinion on that piece of shit movie

Notice that you're contradicting yourself??

I have made my opinion known. I am no longer retaliating to you two.

EDIT:
:

()
I kind of feel sorry for you that you had to watch it three times

I chose to watch it 3 times. Once by myself when I had no idea what it was, the second time I got my family to come see it at IMAX, then I saw the 'extended edition' at IMAX again some time later.
