You're right. Maybe I should... meet up with him. To ask him.

Crashpunk 03-14-2012 03:49 PM

To be very honest I don't like Insert Coin's style of designs that much. Maybe if we saw some Abe designs I'll be more convinced :)

The model they used doesn't look like the kind of guy who would wear Oddworld paraphernalia.

I like his Clint Eastwood hairstyle/beard combo. It’s subtle.

DarkHoodness 03-14-2012 05:46 PM

I think Crashpunk has a point. That t-shirt doesn't say "Oddworld" to me. It relates to Oddworld 'cause of what the text says, but that's as far as that goes.

Xavier 03-15-2012 04:18 AM

Out of curiousity, what would say "Oddworld" to you?

Crashpunk 03-15-2012 06:10 AM

Abe, Scrabs, Paramites...Rupture Farms logos? you get the picture.

I think the Abe games is the next thing you need to focus on for shirts. The insert coin shirts are okay but nobody but big Oddworld fans like us would get the references to SW. Abe and AO/AE are much more iconic and would be more suited for merch like shirts.

Wil 03-15-2012 06:22 AM

The plan was to tie in the theme of the shirts to the games that were coming out about the same time. I think it would be prudent to withold that plan in favour of what everyone's asking for. Of course, anything we do with Insert Coin will use their established design philosophy, but I have been looking at other tee supplies with little success.

Xavier 03-15-2012 07:13 AM

So we are "stuck" with the Insert Coin kind of designs? Not that I don't like them but some variety is always nice.

Out of curiousity, who actually did the designs of the two IC t-shirts? Someone from IC or someone from OWI?

Wil 03-15-2012 07:59 AM

Insert Coin have no exclusivity, and while we've established communication with other companies with different styles, there's nothing in the pipeline with them.

Insert Coin are primarily responsible for the designs. They did a few and we selected our favourites before starting a back a forth on refining the design. The Clakker on the New Yolk City tee needed quite a bit of attention to get him looking right.

We've got tentative plans to involve more community feedback in our next work with Insert Coin, but nothing concrete.

Manco 03-15-2012 10:20 AM

For me, a lot of what defines Oddworld as a style is detail – creature designs with intricate muscular and skeletal structures, massive environment art brimming with nooks and crannies, etc.

To me, a flat vector-styled shirt isn’t quite Oddworld. It’s not bad, and I’ll probably buy one, but something different would work wonders.

Sekto Springs 03-15-2012 02:31 PM

I like the vector graphics, as I feel it's a good representation of the "consumerist" side of Oddworld. Typically, detailed graphics with a large color palette look shite on a t-shirt, and are expensive as hell to print.

OANST 03-15-2012 03:04 PM

There should be a shirt with a cat smoking a cigarette. The caption reads "Cats don't smoke cigarettes". That's my input.

MeechMunchie 03-15-2012 03:15 PM

I quite like the idea of trying to ground Oddworld products with modern Earth-style advertising, but I think it would be better to focus on some of the weirder products like Soulstorm Brew if we're to get the right balance.

This, pretty much.

Also, I hope you find a company that doesn't ridiculously overcharge for both the shirts and postage. That will probably mean taking it out of the UK.

Here's an example. There is a contingent of weirdos in this country that think wolf-themed garb is the best damn thing since sliced bread. They are a scourge on the fashion world, and an insult to everyone who makes an effort to be at least competently dressed.

Admittedly, I have a few shirts that violate the simplicity rule. A shirt of Freddy Krueger, a promotional Dead Space 2 tee featuring Isaac warding off a horde of Necromorphs, and this Ghosbusters shirt. But in the end, I think vector art with simple colors is the more sensible choice, and it's not as if there's a shortage of wonderful, streamlined logos in the OW universe to choose from.

Mr. Bungle 03-15-2012 07:47 PM

I want one with a picture of Abe on the front, doing the usual "I dunno" pose, and another on the back with Shrykull fucking shit up.

Pretty much the following:

For example the Sekto Springs t-shirt - While I agree that simplicity is the key to good t-shirt print design, its incredibly... Generic and apart from the text, doesn't seem to have much to do with Oddworld as I said earlier. The New Yolk shirt is better 'cause it actually features a picture of a Clakker but still seems to lack something.

Anyone remember these? Even though they're posters, they're simple and say "Oddworld" to me. I'd love to see simplified (without the shading) versions of those as t-shirt designs, maybe. EDIT: Or if not, t-shirt designs based on this style.

Nate 03-15-2012 08:47 PM

I'd like to see some native rock art and some industrial marketing material.

DarkHoodness 03-15-2012 08:56 PM

Yeah, the posters in AO for example. They're nice and simple... So is the Rupture Farms logo. Studying them carefully for my Minecraft project made me appreciate their design a bit more... Who made them anyway though?

Sorry, it's late and I can't be bothered to crawl across the 'net to find better images. I linked to these for convenience.

I totally agree with you on this one. Native rock art could be amazing.

Yes, the RF logo could work, but I think the product posters would be a bit too heavy for a tshirt.

Definitely. I would feel stupid as hell walking around with that. It's like those really egregious, loud Mickey Mouse shirts that people from trailer parks wear.

This is common misconception. They aren't actually Mickey Mouse shirts. It's just the sweat from their massive, flappy bosoms accumulates and creates a Mickey Mouse-shaped stain.

OANST 03-17-2012 07:01 AM

Ahhhh. That makes sense.
