Racism, homophobia, and intolerance of choosing what to do with one owns body.

moxco 08-21-2011 02:45 AM

If you had a child who was into self-mutilation...

Racism, homophobia, and intolerance of choosing what to do with one owns body.

Although those are bad things, the world would be pretty boring if everyone agreed with each other.

Children can't be expected to use their body responsibly because their brain is still developing. This is why we have an age of consent.

moxco 08-21-2011 03:20 AM

If you had an eighteen-year-old child who was into self-mutilation...

Wings of Fire 08-21-2011 03:21 AM

I would give them all the help and support I could?

.

T-nex 08-21-2011 03:26 AM

But ultimately it would be their own choice.

Also casting away intolerance doesn't make everyone agree with each other. Just agree to disagree and stop all the hatecrime, stupid laws that serve no purpose other than to restrict etc.

moxco 08-21-2011 03:28 AM

What were you actually referring to when you said that?

Ridg3 08-21-2011 03:32 AM

If someone self-harms then they're clearly not in the right frame of mind, thus needing our help and support. What I think T-Nex was referring to is people slating someone else smoking, their drug habits, about that stupid tattoo or any sort of procedure they want to undergo to change how they look or whatever.

Nice job forcing mental illness out of the equation.

If my adult child was self harming simply because they wanted to, then there's nothing I could do about it.

Goodness knows my mother puts up with enough of my brother's self destructive tendencies to teach me that.

moxco 08-21-2011 03:33 AM

If someone is smoking they're clearly addicted to nicotine (or whatever substance), thus needing our help and support.

EDIT: WoF you missed my point, I'm not saying self-harming is good, T-nex's post just led me to believe that that was what she was implying.

OddjobAbe 08-21-2011 03:38 AM

I think that's a poor comparison. You know, a person can smoke because he enjoys it, and, regardless of whether or not he is badly addicted, I don't think he'd appreciate any "help and support" unless he felt that he needed it. In fact, he'd probably find the condescension insulting.

T-nex 08-21-2011 03:42 AM

Well just choices in general that seems to have no implications on anyone else but themselves.

Say... if someone was into cutting for the art(such as scar drawings) then I would have no business telling them they cant or imposing some law saying people can't do that.

Same goes to tattoos... Drugs is a bit of a grey area. i support people doing with their bodies what they want, but the thing is, what if they get violent cos of the drugs?

I always thought setting up legal safe-houses would be a nice way of dealing with the drug issues.

But yea... In general people should be able to make 'bad' decisions without society imposing their laws or beliefs.

I even think prostitution should be legal. And any sexual decision one consents to.

We're way too intolerant as a species. x_x

But yea when mental issues come into the picture I suppose that's a more debatable area.

But I really just wanna throw intolerance out of the window. It only serves to keep us cushy and sheltered.

Wings of Fire 08-21-2011 03:51 AM

There's a strong argument that after the first hit no addictive drug user is doing 'what they want' anymore.

And before personal freedom, prostitution should be legal for security and protection reasons.

But the only reason one would enjoy smoking is to overcome the withdrawal symptoms, the same way someone cutting themselves is only trying to overcome emotions or something.

EDIT: Ok, I left the computer whilst replying to that. I only saw oddjob's reply.

Do you really think so? That might be true in a number of cases (even most cases), but I have talked to people who enjoy other things about the cigarette rather than just the relief it provides. Like anything which is consumed, it has qualities which may appeal to some.
In fact, the smell may bother a lot of people, but since being a child, it's a smell which I've enjoyed, despite not being a smoker. You don't need an addiction or any other psychological problem to enjoy sensations like that.
It is more likely that a self-harmer is self-harming because he has mental problems than it is likely that I enjoy an unpopular smell because of mental problems.

Jordan 08-21-2011 04:19 AM

I'll admit that sometimes I enjoy the smell of smoke from a cigarette. It's a guilty pleasure of mine, but I'd never dream of actually smoking one.

The user initially decides they will start doing drugs thus making it a decision of their own... everything included.

Dynamithix 08-21-2011 04:32 AM

Maybe there should be a whole new thread regarding this stuff rather than mixing it up with the dumb Room 102 thread.

No heroin user, when taking their first shot, imagines they might one day be sticking a needle in their groin.

I'd put that thread in the Room.
