Can you make a waterslide and/or log flume?

Wil 10-27-2010 05:57 PM

Sort of, though direct control of the boat is required. Note that waterfalls buggily allow boats to skyrocket.

Crashpunk 11-06-2010 09:50 AM

I've been playing Minecraft and I really enjoy it. I'm getting the Alpha version soon.

enchilado 11-08-2010 01:44 AM

Daaaamn. I recently bought this, and it's bloody brilliant.

I'm on my third world already (the first was dumb, and the second is for a project I'm slowly working on: a world high in the sky, with hills and streams and forests and all lit up with torches...).

In my current one, I've dug into a hill on the border between a desert and some grassy hills. I haven't done much yet - got a couple of trees growing, some reeds/bamboo, a line of cacti, and some Jack-o-Lanterns that were already present - but I'm going to stockpile blocks and then make something. I know the way to a nice big lava waterfall, too, if I want to make a lighthouse - and of course there's plenty of sand around to make glass - does lava affect that?

The only trouble is, my respawn point is aages away from my house. I just found a page on changing your spawnpoint, and it looks like I need to install some program and manually change it, which sucks. I'm not sure if I will though - it makes me more concerned about dying if I have to walk for five minutes to get home again.

Wil 11-08-2010 03:13 AM

I recommend using MCedit to manually move your spawnpoint if it's that inconvenient. Basically you want to be able to make a mad dash for all the equipment you dropped when you died. I have sometimes used MCedit to temporarily remove sections of the landscape, like when I was building an underwater ice tunnel in a snow landscape, but I went under an overhang that sheltered the water beneath from icing over.

enchilado 11-08-2010 10:45 PM

Fuck! I found a bug!

It's really neat; if you shut down your computer while Minecraft is running, you actually LOSE the current world! Haha! Now that it's happened to me twice, though, I'll probably be more careful.

So for a while I've just been starting new worlds, deleting, and starting again until I find a nice place. I could just explore one, but this will save me changing my spawnpoint. I'm in a promising one now, with an awesome cave system near to the spawnpoint (with several waterfalls in it! It's so cool!).

There's another bug too (but it's a cool one). If an iced-over pool is only one tile deep, you can dig under the ice and there's no water there. This rocks lots, but you can't place torches because they melt it. I'm thinking of looking for a big pool and digging very deep to see if the torches don't melt the ice when they're several tiles beneath it.

AlexFili 11-11-2010 06:21 AM

I built a nice lookout tower which is my current house, protected from enemies.
I've pretty much accomplished my initial goal to make one of each tool (for gold and diamond). I also have 5 saddles, both the green and yellow vinyl records.

My tip is to dig right down to bedrock and then dig horizontally. You'll usually find some lava chasms. Not only are the lava chasms usually in large empty spaces, you'll find a lot of ores along the walls. Always dig out the dirt/gravel on the lower levels, you'll find some good stuff.

I took lots of minecraft pictures. Here are some of my favourites.
The one with the spider was a split second before I died :P
That picture of the diamonds was where I replaced the graphics of granite with diamonds. My friend thought it was pretty funny. Also... Snake - Big Boss skin! :D

i made diamond tools and armour :)
and i made a castle :)

enchilado 11-11-2010 02:27 PM

Escaping from enemies at night is the most easy thing ever. You always start on a beach, so the first thing to do is to collect about ten blocks of sand. Then, when night falls, aim straight down and build a tower of sand beneath you. In the morning, mine it all up again.

I often use twenty-forty blocks of sand or dirt for this, but ten is enough. In fact, five probably is - just so long as you're far enough away from the ground that Creepers won't blow you up.

Wings of Fire 11-11-2010 02:32 PM

Don't the skeletons have bows though?

enchilado 11-11-2010 02:34 PM

Yeah, but they don't fire upward.

EDIT: if there are trees or cliffs around you, you may need to make your tower higher so there aren't skeletons on the same level as you. But it's pretty quick to collect 64 sand, and if you build a tower that high, there ain't NOTHIN' gonna get you.

Wil 11-11-2010 02:41 PM

Or you could just dig a hole three blocks deep and plug the top. Depends on what you find fun. At least with your method you get a view, I suppose.

Wings of Fire 11-11-2010 02:47 PM

You guys suck. I found a mountain and built a mini-batcave on my first day.

enchilado 11-11-2010 02:50 PM

I've been caving, it's so easy. I just dig straight down 'til I hit the bedrock, then travel sideways. Haven't found diamonds or obsidian yet, but plenty of steel. I just take abunch of torches with me and place one every ten - twenty blocks to stop monsters appearing behind me.

On a multiplayer server (craft.minestick.com, it's a good one you should try it) I have a cave with an obsidian floor, and I'm making lava waterfalls around the side for lighting. You can't take damage, though, which makes it too easy, but hopefully hitpoints will function properly soon and when they do Minestick is going to be a Hard Mode server. I need to make my cave all nice and safe for when that happens =) .

AlexFili 11-12-2010 12:02 AM

"Then, when night falls, aim straight down and build a tower of sand beneath you. In the morning, mine it all up again." <- This is how I get into my skybase :P

"Or you could just dig a hole three blocks deep and plug the top. Depends on what you find fun. At least with your method you get a view, I suppose." <- If a creeper camps your hideyhole, you're screwed. (Since it's practically silent)

By the way everyone, gold is pretty much useless for everything, just so you know(Except golden apples). My survival tips; Build a base in the sky to be save from enemies. Always look around so a creeper can't get the drop on you. Try to avoid travelling up hills at dangerous times. Spiders are liable to jump on your face. Never dig straight down, always dig diagonally. ^_^

Phylum 11-12-2010 12:07 AM

Everything I read or hear about this game makes me wish my computer could run it just a little bit more.

Never dig straight down

I always dig straight down. It's so much quicker.

Wil 11-13-2010 01:53 AM

And you've never broken through the ceiling of a large chasm and fallen to your death, or into lava?

Also never dig straight up. You don't want sand or gravel land on you and suffocating you.

Oddey 11-13-2010 02:05 AM

I once tried to dig straight up. Unfortunately that is exactly what happened. And I lost some diamonds and the like.

AlexFili 11-13-2010 10:56 PM

Never dig straight down, seriously :P There's a cheat too. If you find yourself surrounded by enemies, turn the difficulty to Peaceful and they'll disappear (Not that I've ever tried that personally).

Wil 11-14-2010 02:02 AM

I have done that, but not because I was being mobbed by mobs. The first time was because I kept dying over and over in a cave and kept dropping gazillions of ores and tools that I was determined to bring back to base. For some reason an inordinate amount of mobs kept spawning and killing me as soon as I'd grabbed all my goods, so I got pissed off enough to cheat.

The second time I was constructing an ice tunnel and couldn't be bothered not to work all through the night. I also used MCedit to temporarily remove an overhang that was stopping the water below from icing over.

im gonna run a server on minecraft,it ll be a test server,1 or 2 hours, you can join in if you want!

Oddey 11-14-2010 03:04 AM

I've been playing a lot of Minecraft recently. I built a nice two story cave house, later added a swimming pool, a portal room, an underground farm, a huge mine, a water themed entrance, two towers connected to one another, a small temple-like thing with a water motif and a room dedicated to both storing lots of cobblestone and burning items I do not want.

I also have about 50 diamonds.

Take ten sticks, a stone pick, and - say - ten or fifteen lumps of dirt with you. It doesn't matter if you die and lose this stuff, and if you get something really good - vast horde of coal, a good amount of iron or redstone or some diamonds - just build straight back up again with that dirt and all the cobble you got from digging down.

Store your loot, and try again somewhere else.

AlexFili 11-14-2010 11:11 PM

@ Oddey, very nice :)

@ Enchilado, I can't possibly back up what you say. If you use my method of digging down diagonally, you're guaranteed to live. In your method, you only see the four squares around you. In my method not only do you see more surface area, you have a safe way back.

I do agree with your idea of carrying dirt. Personally I prefer sand, since it sticks out like a sore thumb in a cave. You'll probably need between 15-30 blocks of sand. Try to make a stairway out of stone if possible.

If you find lava, I recommend putting it out with a water bucket if you have one. I personally always recommend carrying water with you. You should keep a backup tool in case you run out of all of them. When you're starting out, you can bring a workbench to your cave and then just construct lots of stone tools again to dig further down.

enchilado 11-15-2010 12:23 AM

You're not guaranteed to live with your method unless you carry torches with you, because zombies and skeletons will quite likely spawn along your pathway.

AlexFili 11-18-2010 12:04 AM

You see the blank space on the top right? By placing things there you can make them stick out (look at some ready-made skins for ideas).

enchilado 11-18-2010 01:12 AM

Q. What can you use the papyrus in Minecraft for?
