I thought that image was of a very poorly Mudokon, as per the Health State progression that was planned for Munch’s Oddysee. I also don’t know whether Mudombies were actually planned for gameplay. But I had always thought Mudokons had nostrils above and between their eyes—which is something of a motif for inhabitant design.

this is more a mudokon that has been exposed to a lot of unplesant stuff :p |
That looks...painful.
Jordan Boi, that's a picture of Abe from the cover of the AO game, and the link works for me. |
It always looked to me that Mudokons should have noses up between their eyes...but I could never seen any nostrils that would empty into a nasal cavity. Though, that would explain the tone of their voices...
Anyway, I think a while back someone mentioned that perhaps there were olfactory organs in their mouths, which would allow them to smell things without having to put a nose on their faces. |
Ooh... That Mudokon looks very sore! :p I wonder what happened to the poor guy? Did he eat something really hot or poisonous?
|
As for that half dead Mudokon, is he just malnourished? Because he reminds me of those skeleton children from Africa when they don't get enough food to eat...
Where'd that picture come from? |
It was from some content published on gamespot, I think it's removed now :(
|
Spoiler!!!! :p
I found it on the OW Bonus DVD. EDIT: Oh, never mind u didnt mean what i posted, sorry. |
Well, the thread started out, "How does Abe breath?", and the answer to that is obviously through his mouth. I think you answered that already, and I don't mean to sound pompus or anything, but
He breathes through his mouth, because it would be just like the gluckons to even work to control their slaves breathing. They have no other air holes, and even the ones with stitched lips can open their mouths if they work for it and stretch their skin hard enough. Making them work to breath, with a side effect of not being able to easily talk, or eat either for that matter, sounds like industrial oddworld 100%. As for if and how they smell... From the thought I've put into it, I'll have to go with they don't have any sense of smell. Not a physical one like humans or dogs would have at least. In their earlier sketches in the art book, the guy who would end up as Abe started out by looking basically amphibian. Or of the close relative of an amphibian. Looking at Abe close like that, you really get an idea that he can't smell. I sure as hell wouldn't want to evolve a sense of smell in the places mudokons need to go to work, and what they needed to work around. Your guess is as good as mine tho. |
Sorry if it's kinda been brought up before but... Mudokons, must have a sense of smell, surely, because when you stand next to one and fart on AE, they say 'Whoof!' and take a step away. Surely they wouldn't take a step back if they couldn't smell it? If they haven't got some sort of nose somewhere, I'd have to go with the 'tasting smells' like a snake theory,
|
I dont know. I just find it so funny that we talk about this. He might very well breath and smell through his toes but he might not. This is so strange to me, cause people tell their interesting ideas, but they only stay interesting ideas for ever. I am tempted to do that too cause its a really interesting topic.
But then we might as well ask: how do Glukkons eat??? :p And many other questions. |
how do Glukkons eat? they probably have some tables that are nearly eye level and then chow down so they don't have to bend over. Or maybe they don't eat in public because they don't wish to be disrespected among others.
Just my theory... |
^LOL. Ish. Just sounds funny...
Mudokons smell somehow, obviously. It may be that they have a far superior sense of taste to us and so can sort of taste the air when breathing. This has sorta happened to me, but only with very strong scents. But I reckon however they smell, can't result in it being much stronger than ours. Birds do not, as a general rule, have a good sense of smell. The only one I can think of off the top of my head that does is the Kiwi, and I doubt Mudokons evolved from Kiwis. The mudokon tongue as it is is similar to that of a frog, in the sense it can snap out to grab prey such as flies or something. But it is far more thick and muscular, which is how they talk with it also. It may also help them make those amazing whistles. Since they primarily appear to use their tongue to feed, in a sense, a powerful sense of taste would be thought of. Or, perhaps, as the air goes down seperate tubes from the mouth to stomach or lungs, somewhere there they perhaps have scent receptors, like the ones inside our noses, just placed further down the osaphagus. Or maybe even in the lungs themselves, or just outside them. Who knows. |
:
That's what I was thinking but on Abes exodus whan you walk right by a mudoken and turn around and fart in there face the go "Eww!" Try it. I KNOW it works. Hey guys. This is why its called "ODDworld." |
:
About smelling, Sligs can certainly smell (AE intro) and also probably have a nose in all those fleshy tentacles. IMHO, the nose and mouth are separate in Sligs. |
What about a pic of a mudokon´s skelleton?
|
I'm sorry but they are only in the book, and we don't allow scans to be posted here
|
Maybe he breath through his skin, like amphibians do under water.
Could be the reason for their few clothing. |
isn´t it cuz he use to be a slave?
|
All mudokons wear this. Not only the slaves.
|
What I don't get is why they wear them, I mean, it said that Abe's private bits were cut off when he was working at Rupture Farms on the official OW site, so that must apply to all worker class Muds, so why do they wear loincloths? They have nothing to hide... But I suppose it's for decoration or some other reason!
|
Mudokon have bottys. ;)
|
I'm sorry but... What's a bottys? :p
|
A botty? That's your ass. :dodgy:
|
Oh yeah... I'm being stupid today, my mind's gone blank, why did I say bottys!?
|
A german shows an american how to speak english. That's odd. :D
The reason for their cloathing was to hide their asses and maybe some other things. ;) |
:
|
You strike up a good point there, Max.
But i read somewhere that Mudokons have no genitals because the only female around is/are the queen(s)... The loinclothes are decoration, me thinks. |
I think Alf had clarified in one answer to a fan that Mudokons wear loinclothes for fashion. I remember one of them at least. Actually, I think the profile for Abe says that since he is in the Worker Class for Mudokons, he has no sexual organs. Not exactly they cut their sexual organs off.
|
Although he has no sexual organs, he has a projection for removing urine, which is probably covered up for the obvious reason.
|
Listen up guys, this is oddworld abe could breath through his bum for all we know.
|
...
That is the most insane idea ever, Mox. But you do kinda have a point. But it sees unlikely. They'd suffocate if they got constapated or something. In the book, a full colour scale map (for the computer models) was shown of Abe. Buttocks were represented, but there was nothing in the front. The developers did actually colour all that was normally hidden by the loincloth, so I presumed they had nothing there, even for urinating. The loincloths are worn for cultural reasons, whether it be fashion or a specific part of their history that is important to them. |
Well... I dont know but im pretty sure that in the AE movie when Abe falls out of Necrum Mines into Necrum, and lands on a mammoth-like creatures skull and lands on its (theeth??) and hurths himself right between the legs... well he makes a face that shows he has testicles or a sexual organ of some kind. It is unmistakeable a face most guys make in movies when they get hit in the balls.
|
The inside bits of the legs, where they join to the body, really hurt when hit there, trust me... It could have just been his legs, or the tooth/tusk could have gone up his ass, you never know!
|
Yup, that sort of landing would hurt no matter where it hit you. Genitalia are not necessary for this event.
|
:
|
Clearly not.
But I would call it unlikely, as respiration through absorption only works when the skin surface area to body mass ratio is high enough. As objects (and thus creatures) get larger, the mass increases at double the rate of the surface area - imagine a cube then another one double as high, wide and thick; the surface area is four times the size of the original but the mass is eight times. So a large creature like a mudokon could probably not respire through the amount of oxygen available through the skin. |
We still haven't figured this out? Can't we just say that Abe can breathe and smell through his mouth. and that Abe may not have Sexual Organs due to his Class, but you do know that whether or not he does or not, hitting that thing hard would still hurt any part of your body. :P
|
You can have sexual organs and still be infertile. I suspect that they are like that of underdeveloped Drones.
