But this has been calculated before.

I know: I calculated it. However, I now recognise that it was a shakey and unreliable calculation.

Nate 10-03-2006 04:21 AM

That's the best sort there is!

*goes back to engineering homework*

Bonedust 10-05-2006 04:39 PM

What are the 5 types of outlaws?
The only one I remember are the huntched backed type With Filthy Hands Floyd.

Arxryl 10-05-2006 09:42 PM

I remember there being the regular knife throwing one, the explosives guy that goes kamikazee, the snipers, machine gunners, flame throwers, and the huge bullies that punch/knife you. I know it's not five, but that's what i remember.

Xavier 10-05-2006 11:43 PM

according to the "Prima official game guide" there are:

-Outlaw Shooter (Minion Shooter)
-Outlaw Nailer (Nilsworth "Pokey" O'Shafster)
-Outlaw Flamethower (Gunter "Sparky" Vonfarenheiten)
-Outlaw Semi Auto
-Outlaw Cutter (Cleever McMince)
-Outlaw Mortar (Mortimar Bang)
-Outlaw Bomber (Snapps Manic)
-Outlaw Sniper

Bullet Magnet 10-06-2006 01:37 AM

Or was he asking abot the physical varieties?

I think it has been generally accepted now that they are all the same species.

*Clears throat*

Common hunchbacks. Three models: The yellow tusked one, the puffy-lipped orange one, and the big giant nailers with the horns.

The "hammerjaw" (for some reason they always make me think of hammerhead sharks, but are no hammerheaded. Their jaws are thier main distinguishing feature). Funky jaws, grey skin, thorny protrusions on arms... pot belly (could just be down to the brew!) and short, stumpy legs. Their have teeth in the "lips" and the gums behund them. The Booty brothers and Fint "Xplosives" McGee.

Yellow heads. Bald, with sticky-out ears. Fat, short legs, yellow skin. Wide jaw, though not as distended as the hammerjaw's. Castaraider, Loootn Duke and Fatty McBoomboom.

Female. Seems to be a combo, as she is primarily hunchbacked, has the nailer's horns but also the hammerjaw's jaw. Jo'momma.

Wil 10-07-2006 03:21 AM

I disagree about Jo’ Mamma being of a separate “shape”. On the composition Xav posted, compare the jaws and hunchbacks of Jo’ Mamma and Nilsworth O’Shafster. It’s a shared trait amongst all those of the “horned” variety. The same applies to the Nailers.

Now try comparing the “yellowheads” with Wolvarks. Hmmm, interbreeding, anyone?

There is a fifth type, which was never seen in the game.

Bullet Magnet 10-07-2006 10:33 AM

I suppose. Notice how Jo'momma is the only one with downward bending horns?

Arxryl 10-07-2006 10:41 AM

Yes. but maybe that's just 'cause she is a girl. (hopefully...)

Bullet Magnet 10-07-2006 10:57 AM

That statement is also up for debate. I think she is the closest you'll get to an outlaw female, but some disagree...

skillya_glowi 10-07-2006 11:22 AM

Right. I dunno if this is the right place to put this...but...we all know that there are only Scrabs in the Stockyards, but when I was listening to Killy's recording, I could have sworn I heard a Paramite, like when they are supposed to gamespeak "Howdy". Is it just me or is it really there?

Xavier 10-07-2006 11:34 AM

in some previous versions of AO I think some Paramites were there
but they were removed for some reason

there could be some others in cages we don't see :p

skillya_glowi 10-07-2006 11:36 AM

I don't get why they took the Paramites out. They could have at least put them down as scenery or something.

Xavier 10-07-2006 11:55 AM

to create a surprise later in the game I guess
and not show all the creatures already in the second level

Bullet Magnet 10-07-2006 12:37 PM

Probably memory reasons. You can have one, or the other, but not both. Can you honestly say now that you can imagine the stockyards with anything else?

Could someone explain what the Munch The Heart thing is on togg?

That was featured in the "Art of Oddworld: First Ten Years" book. It had Abe: the soul, Munch: the heart and Stranger: the Bones. At least I think thats how it goes...

Arxryl 10-07-2006 01:21 PM

Yes, that is how it goes. I have the book, and that's exactly what they all stand for.
Like you said, Abe's the Soul off Oddworld because he started everything. Munch is the heart because he is everything Oddworld stands for, and Stranger is the bones because "sometimes a bone has to be re-broken before it can be healed." Also, he held oddworld together and kept it going.

Xavier 10-07-2006 01:54 PM

that question was asked and answered 3 pages ago :p

Steef Head 10-07-2006 02:35 PM

Hehe. Oops, sorry Xavier.

Kamille 10-07-2006 04:11 PM

What part of Oddworld are Sligs native to, do we know?

ziggy 10-07-2006 09:06 PM

I had just thought of this and would like to know if anyone has ever made a map of oddworld. Like a world atlas. Or a simple concept sketch, even if it is just a fan made thing.

Cullen Heath 10-07-2006 09:58 PM

Buddy has made an Oddworld map. But it had some imperfections, and was corrected by our very own Max.:p

ziggy 10-07-2006 10:58 PM

alright thanks man

Xavier 10-08-2006 02:02 AM

credits goes also to Max for the first one he helped buddy correct his map

What part of Oddworld are Sligs native to, do we know?

Well, noone knows. The current only known Slig queen (there must be more than one queen representing the species on a planet 10 times the size of earth) is Skillya, who is being kept with/by industrialists and selling her offspring to them, so the natural habitat may have been where she was before the industrialists came upon her (or her ancestors). But a guess could be that Sligs lived in swamps inaccessible to other predators, which is why they are so useless without artificial upgrades such as legs etc.
Another reason could be that Skillya solely produces mutant offspring, be it a result of habitat, smoking, or her personal bioligy. Sligs DID once have legs. I look at some close up drawings in the Art of Oddworld (pg.66 top left corner for those who have it), and the "tail" is actually vestigial legs, possibly similar to Glukkons, except the laegs are (in evolutionary terms) closer to being gone, or a tail for other purposes perhaps. I can see notable joints, between 'feet' and the knees. They are there. So it may be a result of underuse, possibly based on climate change (if they lived in swamps perhaps, the vines may have been very low growing and branches, forcing them into a constant crawl). They could suck up food with their tentacles, which may have had other uses.
I'm just guessing, but I doubt you'll get much of an improvement apon that.

Wil 10-08-2006 07:08 AM

Yes, indeed. Credit isn’t, perhaps, the best term. Despite the attention I got from it, I do feel ashamed to have bugged OWI so fanboyishly.

Not if Sligs are confined to a small geographical area, which is likely. Oddworld was given a large size to maximise the number of characters and situations that could be created on it, so OWI wouldn’t spread a single species across its entire surface.

To be fair, I didn't actually answer the question correctly. I was just working from my memory and got it wrong.

Bullet Magnet 10-08-2006 09:39 AM

Wait- I think there's a story behind these maps. Let's here it.

Or I can rephrase it into a question for the QaA. "What's the story behind these maps?"

Xavier 10-08-2006 09:56 AM

Yes, I gave credit:

oh sorry about that :p
I'm a bit tired

Wil 10-08-2006 10:36 AM

Ah, what a super story it is. I’ll go from the beginning to the end. It all started in June 2006 when fans received their first email from the Oddworld Fan Club, which contained a username and password to access Alf’s Comoddities & Tea. The contents included a teabag wrapper to print out and fold:

Atushi's Tea
Atushi’s Tea

And the now famous and beloved Oddworld Map:

Oddworld Map
The Oddworld Map

It was actually Anna (One, Two, Middlesboogie) who first started pointing out inconsistencies, or rather a single inconsistency, which was the distance between RuptureFarms and Necrum in relation to the knowledge that Oddworld is 10 times the size of the Earth. Alf rebutted, and added “Our mudokon fact checker, Buddy is on vacation. Geez, better talk to him about the map when he gets back!” which was really the beginning of the end for poor Buddy. Alf soon admitted it would be “the last time I have Buddy ask a Slig for help” and said a new version of the map would be made. Kesiah added another observed error, relating to the path taken by Abe and Munch in Munch’s Oddysee and its representation on the map. You can read all of this in the original thread, which was started by Xavier.

The second update to Alf’s Comoddities & Tea included a second map, marginally updated:

Oddworld Map 2
Oddworld Map 2

At Nate’s request, I provided a list of all the apparent discrepencies with the Map, and after some persuasion from Xavier, I emailed the list to Alf. And that, good people, is how I became Fan of the Month in February 2003. I have provided a link to that page (which, strangely, was the only way to access the third version of the Oddworld Map (below)), even though the picture of me on there is so aweful. So awefully aweful I want to kill it.

Oddworld Map 3
Oddworld Map 3

It’s also the origin of Buddy’s story, which kept us going for a few more editions of The Daily Deception Online.

Bullet Magnet 10-08-2006 12:08 PM

That's quite a tale. I wish I'd been there.

Unfortunately I was busy waging a personal war against broadband for stopping mere meters from my home. So many needless deaths... :nonono:

Nate 10-08-2006 04:37 PM

Ooh, early nate. How innocent I was...

Yeah, it even makes the canonical story seem tame.

Bonedust 10-11-2006 01:50 PM

Interesting story Max (lucky guy drinking the tea)

Xavier 10-11-2006 10:41 PM

you know the template image for the tea-bag is available on togg :p

ziggy 10-12-2006 06:23 PM

something has been kinda bugging me about the octigi 0.2 sketch in the ocigi family concept art.
His suit kinda looks like the shape of a glukkon's but bigger, but to me it also looks he has humanish arms he's holding behind his back. I can't tell which, could someone tell me?

Cullen Heath 10-12-2006 07:31 PM

Have you played Stranger's Wrath yet? If not, and you plan on doing so in the future, I would suggest not knowing the answer:p
If you don't plan on playing it, or you don't mind knowing, PM me, and I'll tell you, unless someone else answers.

ziggy 10-12-2006 10:15 PM

oh wait....sorry nevermind. I had a retard moment

Luskan 10-13-2006 12:42 AM

lol. Well i've been a bit curious how sekto survived, when the dam destroyed.

I was just wondering since he was basically dead when stranger held him above his head and roared.
