And...OWI made a lot of moolah off MO, because it was a launch title and now it's a platinum hit for zee Xbox.

Face it...Xbox is cooler than PS2! Bwahahaha! IMO...

Eriken 06-28-2004 04:19 PM

Lanning has said himself that he attributes MO's poor sales to the amount of hype that was generated, and then the game's inability to live up to said hype.

However, go check out the poll at http://www.oddworld.au.com
Munch Xbox Poll
What do you think of Munch´s Oddysee on the Xbox?

I love it! (317) 45.94%
Don´t have an Xbox (243) 35.22%
Good, but could be better (84) 12.17%
Dissapointed (35) 5.07%
OK (11) 1.59%
Total of votes: 690

243 people out of the 690 who have voted don't even own an Xbox. That's 243 extra people who obviously enjoy the oddworld series, as they were visiting an Oddworld fansite, yet didn't play/purchase Munch's Oddysee because they didn't have an Xbox.

How can you not believe that poor sales of MO could be attributed to the fact that it was an Xbox exclusive, when so many FANS of Oddworld weren't even able to play it because they don't own an Xbox?

:

Yes. That's the biggest reason why they made it an Xbox exclusive. Microsoft offered them big bucks to develop it as a launch title. And it's a platinum hit because it's an old game and they stopped making any money off of it when they were selling it at retail price. They just give it the name "platinum hit" so they don't have to call it a game that stopped bringing in money.

EDIT:

:

There is no denying that ports from the PS2 end up looking better than the original. Just 1 example: The GTA double pack games look hella better than the PS2 games. Plus the headest and Xbox live are bitching not to mention the built in hard drive.
First off, Metal Gear Solid 2 on Xbox is way worse than the PS2 version. There's lag where there originally was none. Also, Silent Hill 2 was way better on PS2, and almost everyone agrees.
PS2 has a headset as well, and a harddrive (even though it costs $100, but it comes with a free game. Even after buying the HDD though, the PS2 is still only a little more expensive than the Xbox).

You got a point there. However, I always get a multiplatform game for Xbox, because it has better graphics...and I just love the hard drvie. You are right that Xbox needs to release more exclusive games.

what about ninja gaiden.....thats only on xbox

There are a few exceptions. Ninja Gaiden, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Toejam & Earl 3. All of these are great games, and show that the Xbox IS capable of putting out some good unique titles. They just need more of them.

the brew master 06-28-2004 07:21 PM

exactly......but when the xbox 2 comes out they should make more unique titles.......but i'm gonna buy it either way

Eriken 06-28-2004 07:36 PM

Xbox 2 is likely going to bomb. They're releasing it next year, which is pissing a bunch of people off because they don't want to have to spend money on yet another console when the Xbox is still in its prime.
They're hoping to make the Xbox the next PS2, since Sony released it early and it completely dominated the market. However, what it's going to be is the next Dreamcast, since it was released TOO early and then all of the other developers released far better machines a few years later.

Cloverfield 06-28-2004 07:44 PM

Oooh, that poll is really old. I didn't think anyone looked at it anymore and was considering taking it down. Interesting statistics from it though.

I really haven't been able to compare my Xbox and PS2 games, for reasons I said earlier in this post ... which is I only own one title on the two consoles [Silent Hill 2] and that it's hard to compare cause some of the colors get messed when running NTSC consoles through a PAL TV. But Eriken just said that SH2 looks better on the PS2 anyways, so I wouldn't be comparing anything different.

:

the much anticipated Fable should change the face of RPGs for the Xbox.

Fable looked really awesome what I saw at E3... but unfortunately I forgot to check it out and I didn't have time to wait in queue to have a turn at playing it as I had to get to the S-E presentation. But I took some time watching others playing, and it really looked awesome!!!

:

Also, Metal Slug. I'm sorry, but I just effing LOVE that series.

Metal Slug is awesome, it's the only game I play in the arcades when I go, as I don't like the usual fighting games that they mainly have there. But Metal Slug on the Xbox sucks. Well to me it did, anyways ... I went and played the latest installment on the arcade machine they had set up at E3 instead [plus they had it set to unlimited credits ... yay!]. But I don't know about others, but when I play a game like Metal Slug at the arcades, I button bash really fast in order to get lots of shots off. That's all fine on the arcade kind of controller with big buttons that you can hit hard! But on the Xbox, my fingers started getting really sore after only a little while of playing. The Xbox's "domed" buttons aren't suitable for this kind of game IMO. It'd only work if you went and bought yourself one of those arcade style controllers that they sell for fighting games.

Abe Babe...

Sekto Springs 06-28-2004 07:58 PM

Yes, Metal Slug games were best as arcade games. I beat the PS version in under an hour because I never had to deposit more credits.

the brew master 06-28-2004 07:58 PM

did you see HL2 and DOOM 3 at E3?

Ack I'm dying here Abe Babe!!!! Just dying! You are truly the most fortunate person! First Stranger - now Fable!!!!!  I just can not WAIT for this game!

Why were people so pissed off over MO? Its my favorite game in the whole bloody series and I've literally played, in hours, at least a day and a half of my life in MO. Its a bloody genius game. Okay, so the PS2 gets Stranger also, that doesn't mean it is the better buy. I will give you that PS2 has a deeper library of games right now but Christ, an Xbox is worth a purchase just for the Halo, KOTOR, Mechwarrior, and Metal Slug series alone, not to mention its online support beats the PANTS off of the PS2's. Both systems are top notch and I highly reccomend buying an Xbox if you have a PS2 and buying a PS2 if you have an Xbox.

It is absolutely my favourite game also. I have gotten many hours of replay and only found it's 3D environments only improved on an already beautiful world with beautiful creatures!!!

Plus, if you're interested in online gaming...well Xbox Live is far superior IMO. Just the interface alone..plus the support, the set-up now with MSN messenger...well no other console holds a candle to that!

Eriken 06-29-2004 02:43 PM

It's online support is so great because you have to pay an annual fee for it.

Yeah, but with PS2 you have to buy an extra part to make it internet ready. Xbox has an ethernet plug built in.

I own all the current systems and I love them all. I'm not a guy who just gives loyalties to one console...that's stupid.

the brew master 06-29-2004 07:48 PM

no it's not........i'd jump out the window if a PS2 or a gamecube was in my house

Um yeah....excellent support like that isn't going to come for free, but except for one game that I know of...online play with Live enabled games are free. It's all rolled into the monthly fee.

If I'm not mistaken, do you not have to pay an individual fee for alot (if not most) PS2 games you want to play online? Pretty sure I've seen that stated over and over (sometimes on PS2 game forums too).

Also - Xbox Live is worth it for the downloadable content alone! I've gotten so many extra levels, extra characters, even for games that aren't Live enabled.

So that's $50 for the network adaptor total, whereas you're spending $50 a year on Xbox live. Personally, I'd take the one time fee.

I'm by no means loyal to any console. I don't idolize the PS2 or Gamecube. I just don't like anything the Xbox has to offer.

The only games that require monthly/annual fees on PS2 are the MMORPGs like Everquest, but those have monthly fees no matter what system you play them on. The majority of action/adventure games like SOCOM, Resident Evil Outbreak, Splinter Cell, etc., etc., don't have any fees whatsoever. And if they do, it's the developers choice to instate them. Sony doesn't charge anything for their online service other than the cost of the network adaptor.

PS2 with a harddrive allows you to download new content for games also, such as Metal Gear Solid 3. And yes, you'll probably say "but you have to buy the HDD separate", but even so, it's still not much more expensive to buy a PS2 and a HDD than it is to buy an Xbox alone.

:

Um yeah....excellent support like that isn't going to come for free, but except for one game that I know of...
Blizzard has the best online servers to date on Battle.net, and they have never charged a cent for use. Also, I could care less about all the extra features on Xbox Live like connecting to your MSN buddy list and what not. I go online to play games, not to chat. If I wanted to do that, I'd use a computer.

Dualist 06-30-2004 07:51 AM

Stranger was built on the Xbox harddrive, making full use of it. Xbox it is.

Ah Ok I wasn't aware of which games you had to pay for, only that some charged a monthly fee. From polls I've seen on various PS2 gaming boards though, quite a large percentage of PS2 owners would be willing to pay the monthly fee for a better supported online service with better features.

PS2 and Xbox are both 199 here. Then you add 159 for the PS2 HDD. So not exactly true.

Ok well being a female gamer, I keep a very select group of friends that I will play Live with. So I love the whole tracking system, seeing what games they're playing so I can join up with them and not some random group.

So keeping an open mind...I decided I'd go and check out the PS2 last night..thinking there are some games I'd like to play on it. I was fully prepared to pay the 199.00 plus 15% sales tax on it.

But I started looking at their games...started with RPG and then began looking at just anything really - so question: are there ANY 1-4 or even 1-2 player RPG's on PS2? The only game I could really see that involved more than one player was Rainbow Six 3. Needless to say I walked out sans PS2.

I'm definitely not one of them. I would NEVER pay a monthly or annual fee for anything to do with gaming.

PS2's are around $200 Canadian here, while an Xbox costs around $270. The HDD is only $100, so it's a $30 difference for me.

I'm from Canada also..and when I went to Future Shop on Wednesday night (when considering the PS2) both the Xbox and the PS2 retailed for $199.00 CDN. The HDD was $159.00 CDN for me. Must be just the geography then.

Eriken 07-02-2004 10:21 AM

Possibly. I've seen PS2 HDDs for as low as $50 American.

Oh sorry I was just talking about locally...but true there are alot of places to get it cheaper from the US, I should probably explore that avenue before making any purchases.

Any thoughts on my comments on the games...do you have any recommendations for good 2 player (or more) PS2 games?

RPGs are hardly ever multiplayer unless you go the MMO route. But if you just want some good multiplayer games in general, I really wouldn't be able to help you. I'm not big on MP games since my internet sucks and I can't play online. But there are a few good games the I know of with MP like SOCOM 2, Contra: Shattered Soldier, and Neo Contra.
