VII was the only one I ever liked, I just liked how fast-paced and satisfying the gameplay was, classic turn-based stuff ftw. Plus it helps that the game was super friggin' linear because I don't like getting lost in games and I'm not really big on side-quests for some reason. (Although I did try to get the Emerald Weapon lol) But yeah, I hated the WOW-esque gameplay they introduced in XII and therefore never finished that game despite really adoring the art direction and graphics. I also played the first two on FF Origins but never really got into it, I actually prefer the more cinematic FFs. I just really like the cyber-punk theme in VII and would probably like XIII if I gave it a chance.

My favorites are IV, VI, VII, VIII, X, and XIII. My absolute favorite is VIII. I still love Squall and gang, like old friends. VII was great, Fuck the haters who just jumped on the VII sucks bandwagon. I only validate REAL reasons to hate it. The only bad points are the translation and weird ass pacing. And it's aged rather badly, sadly. And Nobuo Uematsu is amazing. He is only surpassed by Matsuda san's work on Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross...Scars of Time still sends shivers down my spine.

the battle system, story and characters. I enjoyed it for what it is, not what its not. Not nearly as good as X or VIII, though. I look forward to the sequel, looks like an improvement. Versus is my absolute most anticipated game, though.

Ridg3 and I hold similar opinions. For both of us to be fans of Final Fantasy before the 21st century, let me tell you why FF13 is an insult.
Battle system? Final Fantasy's battle system was perfect until Enix. 12 ruined it, and 13 raped and spat on it. Turn-based may be old-school, but an old-school recipe can be revamped. Play Lost Odyssey; Hironobu and Nobou, FF's big players made that game the real Final Fantasy XIII. Story... admittedly, yes... quite interesting until late Disc 2... then, it got boring. It was recycling nostalgic memories from earlier titles. It put me off, until I returned to it just to get achievements and to probably give it a chance to kick up at the end... nope... Characters.. Agh... Lightning is Cloud. Snow is Zidane. Fang is Auron. Sazh is a pathetic replacement for Barret; he's black and shoots bullets. Am I being racist? Why not give him a spear, then? Hope is the emotional distraught faggot. Play earlier games, you'll find one... Vanille is the airhead... you don't need to look far... 70% of people who liked FF13 have never played the previous titles. The remainder are those who think the franchise have a chance (through yaoi fanfiction) In a nutshell...13 is shit. Play Lost Odyssey or Blue Dragon; Hironobu and Nobou made (if somewhat underrated) epics of them. |
I have played both Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon. Loved Odyssey, Dragon...alright. Though I love Toriyama's art. I have played all the numerical FF's, barring III, as I have yet to play the remade ds version. And the only two I HATE are V and XII. exdeath and that mother fucking license board can bite me. I expected so much from XII...tactics and Vagrant Story are amazing. And FF chars have been repackaging themselves loooooong before XIII. Though I agree, it is still shite compared to IV and such. But I enjoyed the fantasy, and await XIII-2 eagerly. nonlinearity returns! And monster catching sounds fun, like SMT. Also, as a sidenote, Kaim Argonar made me cry. That is a feat.

The battle system was just about as good as Final Fantasy games got and I really loved the sphere grid system.
But the plot man, the plot. Character-wise Yuna was awesome, Auron was awesome in a kind of not really trying way, Lulu and Wakka were a little interesting, the lion thing was cool. And then Tidus. Tidus is the worst Final Fantasy character ever. He's worse than Vaan for heaven's sake, if only because Vaan has much less impact on the plot. Also Seymour. Just Seymour. |
I loved Lost Odyssey. Gongora was my favourite character though, I always had a thing for antagonists. Hironobu did a good job, I wished the game had more recognition. It beat the shit out of XII and XIII combined.

Plus I love James Arnold Tayler...Tidus and Ratchet? mmmhmm. Though I wish Michael Erwin did more besides Jak. My friend always refers to Tidus as "THAT MEG RYAN MOTHER FUCKER" lol...poor nonexistant memory guy. lol
