MEXICO CITY (AP) - Mexican health authorities say they have confirmed 300 swine flu cases due to the virus among a total of 679 people tested so far. That's up from 260 confirmed cases announced just a few hours ago.

Less than half of the suspected cases tested have been confirmed as swine flu.

Health workers have visited the homes of 76 suspected victims and found only two cases in which relatives tested positive for an A-type flu virus which could be related to the swine strain.

Health Secretary Jose Cordova said Thursday that authorities have spent 1.6 billion pesos ($116 million) on medical supplies and equipment so far in the epidemic. The outbreak has caused a confirmed 12 deaths in Mexico.
This was on my local news.

I think the bigger worry right now is that a hundred-odd Mexicans have died unrelated to swine flu.

Blessed are the morons, for they shall inherit the M-O-O-N.

M-O-O-N that spells Earth! Laws, yes!

I woke up two nights ago at 2 AM convinced I had Swine Flu and that if I went to school I would kill everyone. I was wrong, since nothing happened the next day except for some coughing.

LOCK YOUR DOORS, MEXICAN DISEASE IS SPREADING

It's time for...

JOKE OF THE DAY!

It was said that a black man would be president when pigs flew. Behold, within 100 days into Obamas presidency... Swine flu!

AlexFili 05-01-2009 02:08 AM

Swine Flu works better than Killer Flu.

Hobo 05-01-2009 05:01 AM

London has cases. It's ok though, don't worry about me. I'm going to compromise my immune system with so much alcohol I'll be fine.

Havoc 05-01-2009 05:39 AM

On the official record there's one Mexican Flu death in the US. However this was a 23 month old infant from Mexico who's parents were visiting Texas. Why this death is added to the US list is beyond me.

Did you know that the Swine Flu actually creates zombies? It's true!

So my school is closed for the next week, and I wont have to make up the days at the end of the year either. Win.

Umbrella Chronicles rocks btw.

I would much prefer to be in a rough world than this one. I don't mind if all the humans die either, give the octopi a chance to take over. I would Love to have to fight for my survival, I feel horribly complacent sitting at my computer chair, I want to be a real animal, I want to have to fight to live. I probably wouldn't, but I'm sterile anyway, so I have no good genes to pass on for the betterment of the species. Even if I do die, all I want is an afterlife so I can see what happens. I would kill to watch the world evolve to fill the niche we would leave. And a big one it is. I've actually drawn pages upon pages of wildlife adapted to live in the ruins we leave behind.

Yep, I'm pretty harsh. I prefer the term 'Pessimoptimistic'.

Well, things may have to get much worse before they get much better. May the infrastructure crumble; a very exciting prospect! :)

Kastere, a little something for you:

So if you got the swine flu, and survived it.. Would that make you resistent to it in the future?

Bullet Magnet 05-05-2009 01:48 AM

So far as the future consists of weeks. The Influenza virus is notorious for its fast evolution and mutant variations (nothing compared to HIV, of course).

AlexFili 05-05-2009 03:11 AM

You can't really become immune to flu. That's the problem, the best thing you can do is have a flu jab which contains the most common protection against the most common batches at that particular time (typically once a year, before xmas).

T-nex 05-05-2009 09:12 AM

Wow... That sucks...

Anyway, whether this flu is actually threatening or not, I'm actually happy that the world organisations are working to stop(i hope they are).. All those saying it'll just be like the bird flu, are the ones who in the end will get hurt I think.

On the other hand, Is it possible to stop it? I think that halting it is the most that can be done. Otherwise we'd have to kill off all the pigs :(

Havoc 05-05-2009 10:46 AM

It's already beyond pigs or any other animal. Human to human transitions have already been detected.

The weird thing is though that so far the strain has only made casualties in Mexico. In any other country it's just a really bad case of the flu, but not at all deadly.

Bullet Magnet 05-05-2009 11:04 AM

Bad cases of the flu are deadly...

Havoc 05-05-2009 01:45 PM

I meant bad cases of the flu that don't kill you. Like the kind that have you bed crippled for 2 weeks.

Anonyman! 05-05-2009 01:55 PM

Mexico is a third world country. HMM

Other countries have competent medical systems that prescribe anti-viral medication. And, I might add, most of the Mexican deaths were from before they realised this was a specific strain of the flu. It was from those deaths that people started worrying.

The problem with bird flu was that the birds could migrate and kill humans worldwide, with no way of stopping it. Thankfully, that hasn't happened. Yet.
