I'm confused, a certain mod punish me, for the second time, for my opinions, which were racist, whilst I claimed it wasn't before hand, and afterwards exclaimed why he wasn't.
Fair enough some may say, but isn't that against what the internet's all about, speaking out, I was sure there were no sydney lebs on the forums, and I think I said no offence aswell, and if not, I meant to, I mean, why are we now being punnished for our opinions, when we're not directly flaiming a user?
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think generally certain users are over doing it with the negative points, I mean, they're not a less severe way of infracting someone, and it's not warning anyway, hell, if I kept up what I had done to get negative points, I wouldn't have got infracted if I kept it at the same level I reckon.
Owell, guess If I realy want to get it back up, I'll have to just make better posts, and at least it seems everyone is getting noticed at this time, which was one of the things that could make or brake this system.

I think you're thinking about this in the wrong way, just imagine a offline situation for a second.

A guy runs up the street screaming and wearing a placard saying 'Kill the (insert ethnic minority here)'. Surely you have less respect for a man who does that than a man who just walks up the street normally, maybe helping an old lady across the road and with less respect surely in your eyes his reputations decreased.

My point is that a reputation decrease isn't a punishment, simply a rationally expressed opinion against you because people believe your opinion for whatever reason lowers your credibility for objectivity, politeness, non-generalization etc etc.

The moral of this story: Don't express controversial/flawed opinions and expect people to love you for it.

As far as I see it, Hobo gave you negative rep, because you made a racist remark, which for some can be very insulting. To me it seems like a perfectly normal reason to give rep. Besides, no rules state when you can or cannot give rep.

If it's such a big issue, you can take it up with Alcar and suggest something, but all this whining and bitching is only gonna dig you in a deeper hole, I believe.

No it's not that I feel bad about it, I don't care since I have the same power, if you want to see my point, look at the "goodbye" thread, it's hard for me to explain, but I see the system in general being misused, and it's not Alcar's fualt so there's no reason to complain to him, he was merely trying to bring something fresh to the forums, and every new things require adjusting to.
It's actually that Hobo seems to be targetting certain people, or people that actually try and obbey the rules that frustrates me, he may be saying that he is dishing out justice, but leaving people who are known or infamous for their flaming, etc. in the forums unscaved is more injustice.
As as always in the forums, certain people are being picked on, and certain people aren't.
Anf or your record, I actually check when someone makes a bad post and see if they have been told off or at least had rep points taken off for them.

I can see what he means and don't much care that he's taken rep for it but here's something I'm pondering: How the hell are you supposed to get good rep?! It seems that if it is a good post by a small person it's overlooked but bad posts are easily picked up.

Hey, here's a suggestion: maybe when taking rep less rep should be deducted then when giving rep...

I recently lost some rep, taking below 10, causing my rep power to go to 0. Were my reputation to go back to 10 or above, would my rep power return to what it was originally (3) or start at 1?

Think about this in an offline sense again. Cognitive bias's, first impressions, past knowledge etc etc. Reputation means a damn lot more than some stupid little phrase and digit by your name. The process of 'judgement by reputation' has presumably gone on in these forums for eight years and veteran posters didn't lose all that reputation because the phrase told them it was so therefore older members are more likely to get rep because they've earned it beforehand while so called 'Smaller members' like yourself are less likely to get reputation because you post less and aren't as well known. I, of course, am a living criticism for that since I for some unfathomable reason have a silly amount of points O.o.

You earn your rep like you do in any other social situation; by endearing yourself to the majority. It's a slow process you shouldn't care about if you're out to be controversial and the best way to get more rep is to ignore your own points and carry on as normal.

This is why I think that this rep system is silly. Idiots will always want more and people who deserve it know that a number won't affect how the people who matter view them.

Wings of fire, I know you're only trying to help, but this is online, not offline, it's a completly different world, we wouldn't act like this in real life becuase you can get away with things alot more and there's no direct contact or communications so to speak.
The reason older members get rep more easily is becuase they're either famous/ infamous, well known, or people are afraid of loosing them, our numbers are down enough already
Though you do raise some good points, and I know you're trying to help, but it's not the rep that's the problem, it's merely opened a door to a long running potential problem that's being going on in these forums, and well, all forums.
And T-nex, whilst it's not your fualt for suggesting it becuase you could of never forseen this, it's not the end of the world, but it's proving to be the end of some forum members, or at least helping.
I agree with Carnix, people should be more encouraged to give out good rep points, bad should be for more servere things, otherwise, we're nitpicking each other's posts and we have to make every single one of our posts perfect and agreeing with everyone's oppinion, which is hard no matter what annoyone says.

And as someone, I think it was T-nex said, there's no real guidlines on what to rep people for, but expectations, but could we please get a FAQ or something that tells us specifically what to look out for and avoid? Since it's no longer a question of obbeying or disobbeying the rules.

Oh I've given up, I've made long posts, well thought out ones, and I get rep, and then ONAST and his fan club just throughs shit at me, and Disgruntled Intern (and I only pointed it out becuase you said the same about me) becuase I gave him negative points, the simple fact that ONAST has so powerful points alone shows that he's got enough supporters.
I give up, I realy do, it's not the rep system, but what it means, I stand up to the forums and make a few negative remarks, and I've got the whole forums on me, I only complained about Hobo becuase I thought he was trying to get me to make an excuse to be punnished, for all of the shit I've caused.

I'm beginning to sound like a broken record here, if you're so worried about your rep then for the love of God get this into your skull. You are sitting on a computer, he/she is sitting on another computer, they read your comment and judge you as reputable or not by how valid your argument is so don't think the online/offline thing protects you from losing rep if you say something others find offensive. Yes there will be differing views and yes the whole rep giving thing is entirely subjective but if you can't back up your argument (As you couldn't, your reasons for ethnic cleansing being quite trite) you WILL lose reputation in the eyes of that collection of pixels who live half the world away.

For the record I pride myself as being an extremely honest person and act exactly the same online as I do offline.

I can't think there is anyone immature enough to leave these forums (especially the older members) because they have a low number which at the end of the day doesn't mean a thing. To the best of my knowledge we have a moderator who has less than 10 rep and I don't believe he's left yet.

The reputation system is supposed to be based on the content of individual posts - as has already been stated. That is definitely what it was created for.

However, it has limited moderation built in to vBulletin. We cannot moderate it as you would a thread or post - reputation is kept 'behind the scenes' and is only visible to those that receive it and Administrators (if we search specifically for it).

That being said, should we define a set of regulations? That if broken we can remove said reputation points.

And as I'm trying to say, I'm over me loosing rep, I'm just pissed at the trolls and problems of these forums, quite frankly they're bullies, and my standing up to them shows just that, my loosing repution shows what they do to people who give shit to them, but then again, that's the only thing they can do, so I'm happy :)
All I've wanted was for justice to be served and for people to stop leaving the forums, and I wouldn't mind ending this with ONAST aswell, let's just drop this whole thing and move on shall we?
