I've never liked Steve Irwin much, but I couldn't help but feel down with his death (Can't say that him dying wasn't expected, though). He was a good person.

I think people should be respectful of his death. Saying "Good riddance" is insulting to people that knew and loved him.

Nate 09-04-2006 04:56 PM

I wonder how long it will take until the footage of him being hit by the ray ends up on the internet...

Hey Ambi...

Why couldn't it have killed Jeff Corwin instead, you know? Foolish stingrays.

Hehehe! Funny how we actually cheered for the animals to attack Corwin. Man, Irwin pnwed Corwin. Fo' serious.

Also, it's a bit late.. but MF, stop being a dick.

EDIT: I just did some news googling, and apparently he was just snorkeling? He wasn't even attempting to touch the animal from what I understand.. He just swam over/near it. That's.. terrifying. It's really got me to thinking... God knows how many times I'm going to be snorkeling/diving in my life. That or any other horrible sudden oceany death could happen to me like it did to Steve. =/

Mutual Friend 09-04-2006 06:25 PM

As I understand it, he was doing a children's show about the barrier reef when he accidentally and without provocation came across this sea critter.

Statikk HDM 09-04-2006 08:04 PM

I read about stingrays to see what actually did the guy in. The type of stingray that got him, the Bull ray, frequently gets 10+ feet in length and well over 500 pounds, with the largest ever recording being 14 feet on the dot and nearly 800 pounds.
The things are armed with the animal kingdom equivalent of a good rusty dagger that can be whipped by its tail a full 10 inches through a human's chest. And people are joking about this being a pussy animal, or a shameful way to go. I'd bet good money that the mother****er that took out Irwin could take any 2 board members in hand to hand combat.

Facsimile 09-04-2006 08:21 PM

RIP Steve, I always enjoyed the shows.

How about the shitheads who are being so disrespectful just keep their mouths shut? How you could even have a problem with the guy? He saved so many animals, both directly and through the money and awareness he raised. He was a legend and will be greatly missed.

Leto 09-04-2006 08:41 PM

You've swayed me people. Oh, yes, RIP good ol' Steven, we hardly knew ye.

Well, none of us really knew ye.

:robot:

Nate 09-05-2006 01:01 AM

The cops came out today and said that they had viewed the tapes and there was no indication that he had harassed the animal.

Amazingly, this is not even as unlikely as the last person to be killed by a ray in Australia. It was a kid in a boat (!) who was stung when a ray "leapt out of the water" (according to The Age newspaper). He went to hospital, where his wounds were cleaned out, was released but died of the venom a week later.

Leto 09-05-2006 01:54 AM

But stingrays are usually so passive. Don't people ride their backs and stuffs?

This will be the Ballad of Steve Irwin

Nate 09-05-2006 02:38 AM

You're thinking of Manta Rays. They're harmless, though it's actually illegal in Oz to grab one and ride it.

Fuzzle Guy 09-05-2006 05:49 AM

Damn. I've always wanted to ride one.

metroixer 09-05-2006 11:29 AM

I've went close to one with my bro and dad in hollywood beach florida. It was cool. Although I can't help but think it was always going straight to me >_>.

scrabinator 09-06-2006 03:27 AM

I think the worst part is the fact that he was filming footage for his 8 year old daughters new TV show when it happened. I sure hope she never feels guilty about it...

RIP Steve...

No seriously, the guy had balls - He didn't just take it and die, he actaully pulled it out of his chest. . . Then lost conciousness for the last time. Jeeze. But I suppose that might of been just his reaction.

Apparently there's some kind of debate or something (on YTMND) about if he'd of survived long enough to get to a hospital if he didn't pull it out, since Manta Ray poison doesn't kill off tissues, just causes a lot of pain, but I somehow doubt that he'd of survived anyway. . . :S

EDIT: Oh yeah. :) http://hunterjedispirit.ytmnd.com/

Dancing Steef 09-06-2006 07:43 AM

:crying: I heard the sad news on a morning news program:crying: I got so depressed when I heard 'em n' I'm still depreseed today - that guy was one of my favourite nature/animal programer ever :crying:

It wasn't a manta ray. It was a bull ray according to Statikk (a trustworthy source of info :)). Read what Statikk has to say about that type of sting ray in his post.^

DarkHoodness 09-06-2006 08:04 AM

Hmm, okay. . . I haven't actaully done much research on what type of Ray killed him 'cause I don't really care all that much, although you've got me thinking. . .

:

In the case of stings to the heart, it is the site of injury and the nature of the wound that prove to be fatal, not merely the venom of the stingray.

So in that case, in effect, it's the equivilent of getting stabbed through the heart with any sharp object. Does make me wonder if he would've survived if he didn't pull it out. Hmm.

Ah well.

Poor guy. R.I.P.

Wil 09-06-2006 03:16 PM

I could never watch Steve Irwin. It doesn’t befit naturalists to wrestle the animals they’re watching. Give me David Attenborough any day. Neverless, following the news I performed some limited research and learned of his rôle as a conservationist, and can’t help but admire what he did.

I still wouldn’t watch him.

Nate 09-06-2006 04:39 PM

Yeah, but he would have been wrestling them whether or not the cameras were there. It was all about moving a croc away from a location where it could be a danger to others.

Wil 09-06-2006 04:45 PM

You mean people who go abound inhabiting places where crocodiles wander around? Lucky them.

ziggy 09-06-2006 05:23 PM

ya, its ironic that he died by a stingray after being around deadly crocs, snakes, and other things.

But I feel sorry sorry for his family, even they probably got a lot of money.

Too bad he wasn't the stingray hunter

But if something is stuck "through the heart" I think the person is bound to die no matter what, especially if it struck him as Stattik claimed to be possible, like 4 inches into the chest.

:

Hmm, I tend to take this point of view most of the time too. I'm really upset when people kill a wild animal that kills a person whose community (or just himself) is too close to that animals' habitat. Grr Arg. You don't want to be maimed by a bear? Don't live in a house in bear-populated mountain areas. (I've heard several stories throughout my life like that back in my home state.)

Nate 09-06-2006 10:20 PM

Which is much the same philosophy as Irwin had. He was militantly against people who shoot crocodiles simply because they're a nuisance so he relocated them instead. He used much of his wealth to buy huge tracts of land to remain undeveloped as wildlife preserves.

Wil 09-07-2006 10:38 AM

Indeed, and that’s precisely the admirable conservation work I was referencing. I suppose given the inability to straighten up the attitudes of near-sighted humans, relocation of the innocent was the best option.

Living in dangerous places is by no means limited to areas shared with dangerous animals. The Norfolk landscape is unfortunate enough to be inhabited by people who think they have the right to live at the coast, on a floodplain, or in fens, and then complain about coastal erosion, flooding or malaria. And so they plonk down concrete monstrosities and drain the marshes.

And then complain about dispaced coastal erosion and water shortages.

Matriar 09-07-2006 11:45 AM

:( That's so hard. Steve was really an impressive man!
I was really shocked when I read the newpaper: "Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter (I thought it's about another action of him or something like this. Then I just read: ) is dead!"

I miss that man...!

Software Bug 09-07-2006 11:46 AM

RIP Steve Irwin

I liked his show very much.
