OANST 11-29-2010 11:52 AM

I watched a bunch of movies over the weekend after realizing that I get a paid movie channel that I never knew I had access to.

The Men Who Stare At Goats: Fun, but ultimately not great.

Alice In Wonderland: Boring, occasionally interesting, occasionally stupid, and all around unremarkable. So, yeah. A Tim Burton film.

The Bad Lieutenant, Port of Call: New Orleans: This is either very bad film making, or Herzog knew exactly what he was doing, and it is phenomenal film making. I recommend watching, but I think you should smoke pot first. I was baked, and I've never laughed so hard in my life.

The White Ribbon: an interesting German film which is somewhat about small town fanaticism. Pretty good movie.

ziggy 11-29-2010 12:11 PM

The first three movies you mentioned OANST, I pretty much had the same feelings about. And I'm not just saying that to conform.

Well I actually was really disappointed by Bad Lieutenant, especially because of all the great things I heard about it. It's possible I just don't get it either. Go watch MY SON if you haven't yet! I think it's much better. It's a bit spooky, but awkwardly funny and kind of raw.

Oh ya, I saw Wall-E and thought it was really cute and had great visuals. I don't understand what bothered you guys about the fat CGI people. I thought it was fine. Live actors would not have worked for that. And as far as the inconsistency between them and the television people, I didn't really care.

OANST 11-29-2010 12:15 PM

The scene with the iguanas was so unbelievably funny to me that I could hardly breathe by the time it was over. But again, I was stoned.

ziggy 11-29-2010 12:19 PM

Oh, I was sober. STONE COLD.

It didn't really bother me. I just don't think it's anywhere near as wonderful as the first half of the film.

Wings of Fire 11-29-2010 12:25 PM

Yeah, saying the second half was 'Standard Pixar fare' compared to the first is like saying Ocarina of Time was nothing compared to Majora's Mask.

Or vice versa if you're that way inclined.

Okay, first of all, Michael Haneke is Austrian. You should mention that as we have a complex because we are such a small country.

And you really should try out the original Bad Lieutenant by Ferrara, with Harvey Keitel. Haven't seen the remake tho, gonna try it out.

Ridg3 11-30-2010 11:59 AM

I popped my 'Army of Darkness' cherry recently and it was a sensual first time... littered with one liners, shitty acting, randomly appearing weapons and Bruce Campbells chin, what wasn't there not to like.

Hard to kill
and Kickboxer; watched them when I was younger and thought they were the shit, watched them last night and realized they were shit, I think the only good thing out of those two films (other than them ending) was Tong Po saying, 'Marleene goooooood fuck.' and the ridiculous scream Van Damne pulls.

How to Train a Dragon
; A film of utmost and utter win, I haven't enjoyed a show like it in, well, ages.

Mr. Bungle 11-30-2010 12:39 PM

I watched a short film called 'Your Lucky Day'. It was very good. Take a gander, but I warn you, it's quite sad:

Your Lucky Day from Dan on Vimeo.

Emesdee 11-30-2010 11:28 PM

Watched Death Wish III and Death Wish 4: The Crackdown. I still love III to this day, nice and action packed, with a massive gangwar at the end with Kersey and Shriker walking through the streets shooting gang members. It's like NARC in movie form. The forth isn't quite as fun, and the doomed love interest really doesn't get to be in it much until the beginning and end of the movie, but he goes around with a grenade launcher in the climax, which is nice.

It isn't a remake. It isn't even a sequel. In fact, Herzog fought to have the name changed completely, but for some reason the studio wouldn't let him.

Strike Witch 12-01-2010 06:09 AM

I saw Indiana Jones and Crystal Skull just recently.

I really liked it, definitely fits in with the other three films.

Finished the Second season of The Wire, starting the third. Frank Sobotka is still probably my favorite character.

OANST 12-01-2010 10:05 AM

You know what's funny? When BET (Black Entertainment Television) shows reruns of The Wire they edit out the entire dock worker's story from the second season, making the season about three episodes of content long. Try to guess why they do that.

Mac Sirloin 12-01-2010 10:37 AM

Because they're BET?

I actually drew a picture yesterday, wrote "BET" on it intending it to be some silly acronym and then just gave up and wrote "Something I never watch" beside it.

MA 12-01-2010 02:29 PM

watched Green Street Hooligans. its was okayish. i feel they were glorifying football hooliganism a bit too much, because that's all it is. hooliganism. and its fucking stupid.

YOU

i said "i suppose". i didn't fangirl over it. if it were my choice, i wouldn't watch it again, but if i did i wouldn't cry about it either.

ziggy 12-01-2010 02:51 PM

I have post-avatar depression.

BET (Black Entertainment Television)
...this exists?

Sekto Springs 12-01-2010 04:44 PM

Much to Aaron McGruder's chagrin, yes.

Mac Sirloin 12-01-2010 05:53 PM

Aforementioned BET prediction.

LOL'd at Alien Jet.

scrabface 12-02-2010 12:54 PM

I have just seen Requiem for a Dream and I am so fucking depressed right now. although I could easily look through all of the manipulating techniques Aronofsky used, they still worked.

Phylum 12-03-2010 03:08 AM

There is a Leslie Neilson tribute playing right now. Flying High just finished and Naked Gun just started.

I've seen Flying High several times before, but I was too young to appreciate just how clever it was. Things like the buzzard in the cockpit and the background while driving the car. Inflating the autopilot went over my head last time, too.

I love that movie. Leslie Nelson was great.

EDIT: I almost forgot to mention one of the best parts.

"How long untill we can land this thing?"
"I can't tell"
"You can tell me, I'm a doctor"
"I mean I don't know"
"Can you have a guess?"
"Not for another 2 hours"
"You can't guess for another 2 hours?"

Strike Witch 12-03-2010 06:20 AM

I also watched the tribute.

"Entering without a search warrant, destroying property, arson...sexual assault with a concrete dildo?"

Dynamithix 12-03-2010 08:58 AM

Naked Gun movies were the best. I loved them when I was a child.

R.I.P. Leslie Nielsen.

OddjobAbe 12-03-2010 09:45 AM

Police Squad! was fucking great. It's such a shame they didn't make more than six of them.

It's probably for the best, the creators said by that sixth episode they were already running out of ideas, considering how rapidfire the jokes and sight gags were.

Dynamithix 12-04-2010 04:23 AM

I watched 30 days of night 2: Dark Days yesterday and it was pretty stupid.

I didn't enjoy it, but I didn't dislike it either. Usually, that's the case with horror movies for me. Actually, I think I only enjoy old horror movies. Only some new ones are good.
