It’s not a style or a genre. Anime is just a term for animation made in Japan; there are different styles of animation that fit within that and are commonly used, and there are genres that are as well.

I wouldn’t call western animation a genre or a style because it’s too nonspecific and doesn’t fit into either definition, even if there are genres and styles that are commonly used in western animation. The same goes for anime.

Mr. Bungle 01-26-2013 07:36 AM

So The Boondocks isn't an anime despite having the same animation style? Just because it's American it's a cartoon rather than "anime"?

Anime confuses me, every time.

Manco 01-26-2013 07:40 AM

It depends on your definition of anime. Seriously.

Nobody can agree on it and nobody ever will. There is a specific style of animation that most people would point to and say “that’s anime”, but then other people will say that any animation made in Japan is anime regardless of its style.

OANST 01-26-2013 07:50 AM

I can agree with all of that. I only object to people calling it its own art form.

Sekto Springs 01-26-2013 08:23 AM

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's anime.

MeechMunchie 01-26-2013 05:22 PM

quakuu~

Manco 01-26-2013 05:34 PM

Speaking of anime, I finished the first volume of Persona 4.

It definitely evens out in pacing after the first few episodes which is nice. So far it’s managed to keep the really great characterizations that made the game so good, and they’ve managed to come up with some pretty decent alternatives to the gamey shit that wouldn’t work in a non-game (boss fights etc).

Wings of Fire 01-27-2013 06:18 PM

I just finished Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, which was better than the original novel and the three film adaptations I've seen in just about every way, apart from Eugenie not running away in a scandalous lesbian affair.

Amazing series, so much style. Vaulted its way into my top ten.

Fixed, you baka gaijin

Wings of Fire 01-28-2013 02:59 AM

I'd post a picture of Ahiru, and absolutely nobody would get the joke, but I'm not nearly as obnoxious as Strike Witch.

Strike Witch 01-28-2013 03:00 AM

Haha, you were when you were raving about that Princess Tutu show!

Manco 01-28-2013 09:33 AM

ahaha what the fuck is princess tutu

Swan Lake meets dancing ninjas with electric guitars.

AKA The best fucking thing ever.

Award winning and shockingly good fan-made AMV.

Sekto Springs 01-28-2013 01:45 PM

AMV's can win awards?

AMV's can win awards?

Best AMV at the Boston Anime Festival for 2006 I believe. It's a little like winning the award for nuttiest tasting shit of the year.

Even so, I do like it.

Sekto Springs 01-28-2013 02:28 PM

Ah, okay. For a second there I thought the Academy Awards went completely south.

Strike Witch 01-28-2013 02:39 PM

This is the only AMV I've actually liked.

Nate 01-28-2013 05:25 PM

Hay, everyone! This is an 'I Have Just Seen...' thread, not a 'Let's discuss Anime' thread. Remember how I've only had to say that about fifty hundred thousand times over the last few years?!

Wings of Fire 01-28-2013 06:01 PM

But I've just seen a lot of anime. Manco has also just seen some anime. I don't see the issue here.

Well no, I see the issue here but anime is just what it's wearing for the day.

Mr. Bungle 01-29-2013 05:50 AM

Real cartoons>

is what Nate is saying, I think.

MeechMunchie 01-29-2013 07:54 AM

I think it's mainly a relatability thing.

Nate 01-30-2013 01:23 AM

No, it's mainly a 'This thread is getting sidetracked' thing.

AlexFili 01-30-2013 05:05 AM

Watched Les Miserables. Wow, who knew Wolverine could sing! Awesome movie, amazing action. Definitely one of my favourite films so far, especially in the musicals category.

Heh. I saw him on stage in both Beauty and the Beast and Sunset Boulevard well before he was Wolverine.

Mr. Bungle 01-30-2013 06:21 PM

Hipster Nate, watch out world!

I finished season 8 of Seinfeld. What a fantastic show.

Nate 01-31-2013 12:55 AM

Hipsters don't like Disney musicals or Andrew Lloyd Webber.

But I see your point.

Crashpunk 01-31-2013 08:48 AM

I want to see Wolverine: The Musical now.

MeechMunchie 01-31-2013 09:03 AM

I liked him in The Prestige. Which I also saw again recently.

Manco 02-02-2013 02:10 PM

I saw Django Unchained. It was the first Tarantino movie I've sat down and watched the whole way through.

I liked it. A lot.

MA 02-02-2013 07:28 PM

watched Ink. fucking strange film, but i find the concept intriguing. love the Incubi. dodgy acting with some painful moments, but i'm actually glad i watched it.
