It could be ages before 1.9 comes out. Also, it's been announced that when you generate seeds after 1.8 you have the option to disallow the generation of NPC villages, so as not to spoil the immersion for those who don't want 'em. I've no idea if seeds generated before the update will have villages on or off (but I assume off).

Glitch 09-11-2011 04:08 AM

if at all possible I would like the be considered for addition to the user list :)

I like building red stone circuits, transportation systems, and overly complicated secret doors.

Username is Glitcher

Phylum 09-11-2011 04:17 AM

You and DH are going to get on brilliantly.

Havoc 09-11-2011 04:53 AM

Welcome on board, Glitch :)

We could move into the first one we find, then focus on building a home base until 1.9. Then, we launch a scouting party to find other signs of life. then we kill them

I’d like to correct this to refer to strongholds instead of villages.

Wil 09-11-2011 07:32 AM

Oh Glitch, I told you to PM me your username. I was going to use you for some hilarious pranks.

dripik 09-11-2011 10:30 AM

Hm, noone's on the server on the (presumably) last day before the update. Anyway, I'll be on this evening most of the time, so you'll find at least me online, experimenting with pistons since I haven't really used them before.

The Yogcast have a series of videos showing off the pre-release. The only thing I really noticed was that Endermen don’t seem to work properly in SMP.

Not to say there couldn’t be more bugs though.

Well the biggest bug is Furnaces don't work, They crash the game and when you craft something and drop the remaining materials, you can't pick them back up. Obvioulsy it will be fix before its released.

Wil 09-11-2011 01:06 PM

Furnace work fine for me. Craft-dropped items ghost but aren't lost. Are these SMP-specific bugs?

Phylum 09-12-2011 01:23 AM

No. The furnace doesn't always crash and Crashpunk misunderstands the ghost items.

Wil 09-12-2011 01:39 AM

Maybe because I held off a day or two to download it, and it was fixed?

Phylum 09-12-2011 02:21 AM

I didn't think they're releasing bugfixes until they officially launch it, but I this is the company that leaked their own game.

Wil 09-12-2011 03:48 AM

Maybe they made a special exception for something that crashes the game every time you want to cook something. Or maybe I'm just weirdly immune. Ironically, 1.7.3 crashed my Minecraft every time I right-clicked on a stove.

I think I'm pretty much packed for Exoddus. All I need to get now is food, which will be a pain until we can actually stack food. I tidied up the chests by the Nether portal - nothing was taken. I'll add some mushrooms and saplings before we head off.

I'd also like to change my skin to something a little more permanent and "me".

Phylum 09-12-2011 03:50 AM

I'm taking 3 stacks of wheat. That should be more than enough for a few people given how much steak cows drop in 1.8.

Manco 09-12-2011 04:06 AM

I’m taking nothing except the resources in the community chests—I’m gonna survive off the land.

enchilado 09-12-2011 04:11 AM

I have a few basic tools and utility blocks and enough ingredients to make five stacks of mushroom soup.

Splat 09-12-2011 05:08 AM

At the moment stew doesn't stack, because of bowls (if a person with a full inventory eats a mushroom stew from a stack, where does the empty bowl go?). Dunno if this'll be changed when the update is finished.

T-nex 09-12-2011 05:10 AM

Im gonna just take with me what I feel like taking with me. it's not like the new land wont have anything we need. We can get it there as easily as we can get it at our regular land.

What happened to adventuring? >: (

Phylum 09-12-2011 05:11 AM

The hunger bar. There won't be enough cows for all for all of us and a wheat farm will take time to establish.

Havoc 09-12-2011 05:12 AM

I'm just taking wood and a few tools. Surviving off the land FTW!

BTW, if I come back to my place after a while and find all my chests empty I will have someone's head.

Chickens give meat now as well, don't they? And food stacks in 1.8! W00t!

Splat 09-12-2011 05:16 AM

With the new biomes it's possible to be very, very, very far away from any trees. Anyway, why should we have to spend ages gathering common resources like stone when we all have tons of the stuff anyway? Save time for the first-day building, and bring stuff with you! We want to erect a shelter quickly over there, so bring what you'll need for that if nothing else. Torches and some stone and a bed.

That reminds me; I also have a stack of wheat seeds, a stack of birch saplings, and a stack of each type of mushroom to get some farms started.

T-nex 09-12-2011 05:59 AM

I dont really care if Im not gonna find resources easily. I like working for my stuff. I find the finding-and-collecting-resources part of MC fun.

I suppose I'll take some food though. and diamond gear =D

I provided a few beds in the supply chests a few days ago.

Also, is the plan to produce a quick temporary shelter and then build the new base elsewhere, or to start the new base straight away with the sleeping quarters being set up first?

Wil 09-12-2011 06:39 AM

I think a fair bit hinges on exactly what we find when we get through the portal.

Splat 09-12-2011 08:49 AM

Unless we come out somewhere totally inhospitable, the plan is to set up a secure location in the vicinity of where the Portal comes out, and then build the town around said secure location, so we all have somewhere safe to take shelter as necessary during the construction of our houses and the town hall and so on.

Glitch 09-12-2011 09:33 AM

I'm excited and I've not even been on the server yet :D

Havoc 09-12-2011 09:41 AM

I suggest you and DH take care of the new transport system around Exoddus base. I also propose we put the entire new transport system underground as much as possible from now on. I really don't like the look of all those elevated raillines going everywhere.

Yes please. Exoddus Metro has a nice ring to it.

Hulaabeo 09-12-2011 12:03 PM

I'm pumped for this trip! I honestly can't wait! *runs off to plan a nice house/cottage whatever.*

DarkHoodness 09-12-2011 01:16 PM

Well, I came back yesterday and resumed playing Minecraft today - And it seems I came back just in time since the update is still due to be released today at some point. Thank you so much for wanting to wait for me before opening the portal to Exoddus though, even though you didn't need to - I appreciate the thought.

We doing the opening tomorrow provided the update comes out and everything works? I'll be around to film it if you'd like. :)

To respond to the thread:

@Splat: You're wondering who built that castle in the nether? I was going to leave it a mystery, but if I'm going to reveal that, then I might as well reveal it in style. Sort of. I'll just leave this video here and let people judge for themselves:

@Havoc, re: Making the server IP public in order to display an info bar - You make a convincing argument. If you feel it will benefit the server, go for it. :)

@Dripik, that's an awesome comic, +Rep for making me laugh. :)

Regarding new land generation after 1.8 & 1.9: If things don't work as we plan, depending on what gets updated and how large our map eventually gets, remember that copying our creations across to a new map using WorldEdit may still be an option.

@ Glitch: Welcome to the MC server, that's some interesting minecart systems you've created there. Seems really complex though. :P

And speaking of the transit system - If we're creating a small village that we're all building together, unlike in Genesis our bases probably won't be spread out from each other, so therefore we won't need a rail system spreading out all over the place. There will be sprinting now too, so minecarts will be a little obsolete. They're still good as elevators, or for travelling set routes or long distances quickly.

If we do need another transit system to get to faraway places, we'll probably only need a few lines rather than the sprawl we have at genesis. It's a lot easier to build them overland on raised tracks through non-populated areas like I've been doing, rather than dig them underground. Half of Genesis's transit system is already underground anyway - Most of the overland parts weren't populated until after I put the transit system in place. That's just how it evolved.

(Besides, it's nice to be able to look at people's creations from the rail lines while travelling between them and moving from the map - Maybe I can change the style of the new rail lines to make them more aesthetically appealing)

dripik 09-12-2011 01:34 PM

There is much anticipation around, yeah. Apparently, Notch is aware that the crowd demands 1.8, and claims that it's "Coming Eventually(tm)". Ominous.

Havoc mentioned the idea of the underground last time we met on the server, and I approve too.

Splat 09-12-2011 02:06 PM

My guess was tunnel (the nightmare of guesswork that would be...). I'm impressed you got out there; well done, you.

If the update comes out in a morning then I'm all for moving the same day. If it comes out late in the day it might be better to wait 'til the next day to give time for the news to get out.

I do like seeing people's creations as you go along the tracks, myself, but I think if Havoc and other underground supporters want to dig out the tunnels, fair enough.

Yeah, that's why I'm carrying the ingredients. I might take four bowls or so pre-prepared.

If I need to build yet another transit system on the other side, at least I'll have diamond tools to do it with and know how to use the co-ordinates with F3 this time, unlike last time where I didn't have/know how to use those, so I won't mind too much. I don't think I'll be bothering with the 3x3 tunnels anymore though - But the cobble is always useful to me.

Nate 09-12-2011 10:26 PM

I expect to see metro stations on par with the Mosco Metro. Nay, I demand it!

:p

DarkHoodness 09-12-2011 11:00 PM

Eh, sod that. Instead they'll probably end up looking something like this (wool colour can be changed to display line colour):
http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1315893577

Simple, easy to implement while looking a lot better than previous underground stations I've made. I'm loving these new bricks. :)

enchilado 09-12-2011 11:02 PM

Will the new bricks be craftable, though? Only three strongholds are generated per world, so if you have to get them from there -

DarkHoodness 09-12-2011 11:04 PM

Yes, with 4 smooth stone.
