Evangelion is like one of those things that everyone has seen and liked, whether or not they like anime.
I’m in the same boat as you, I got no idea. |
Never seen it.
:
If you like the look of what you see here, you'll like the series. |
It just looks like... anime.
That's a sure sign that you might want to consider expanding your tastes.
You're probably right. I just need to finish Cowboy Bebop first.
Django Unchained.
Solid movie, a lot of good actors and a lot of great scenes, Waltz and DiCaprio stole the show. If you like Tarantino's films, you'll most likely find this one good too. It was quite a long movie but didn't really feel like one. |
I RUINED YOUR DJANGO STATUS AND YOU WERE ALL LIKE PLEEEEAAAAASSEE STOP AND THEN I STOPPED BUT KNOW THAT I WAS LAUGHING AT YOU
That's true.
And I helped!
:
Maybe I'll give it a shot when I finish up Curb and Seinfeld.
I wouldn't recommend it.
If it's not to long I might give it a shot. Thought anime has a track record for making me lose interest pretty fast.
I finished watching Panty & Stocking
aaaahhhh that was a good ending and the twist at the end was silly. i liked it a lot, especially this http://24.media.tumblr.com/1c1b8e250...g6rwo1_500.png |
The only time it was ever as good as it could have been was the music video. Also yeah, dat ending
Since Josh can get away with it, I might as well briefly pop in and say I'm currently watching... Maoyuu Maou Yuusha: A serious and engaging look at medieval economics in a fantasy kingdom with some nice characters. The adaptation is lacking somewhat from the source material but it's fairly charming. Kotoura-san: A dark comedy/drama about a girl who can read minds and discovered from an early age that it's not as good as it sounds. Seriously good. Magi: An arabian nights style fantasy tale coupled with well done political intrigue. It started off fairly shaky, but it's shaping up to be something great with a huge cast of colorful characters. Has a unfortunate tendency to have mustache twirling giggling bug eyed uglies as villains though. Robotic;Notes: A robotics high-school club in the near future discover a global conspiracy maybe. Very... complete feeling and satisfying to watch. Senran Kagura: A guilty pleasure show about a team of high school ninjas with large breasts that fight evil. It's fun. Also where my sig is from. Vividred Operations: currently my guiltiest pleasure. From my backlog I'm also watching Gankutsuou, a surreal sci-fi adaptation of Count of Monte Cristo that manages to be very good and surprisingly faithhful, and Gunbuster, a very old show from the creators of NGE that is so goddamn earnest it's very endearing. Also people here will be more interested to know I bought and will watch Moonrise Kingdom tomorrow. I plan to buy Rushmore sometime soon too. I like this director more than I thought I would. |
I am so into Adventure Time right now, it's unbelievable.
I really like some of the songs in that Panty & Stocking show, but what do you think, is it something that a non-anime viewer could get into easily? It seems a bit interesting.
It's about as far from traditional anime as anime can get, I'd say so.
Anime is not a genre. It's good but not great.
I disagree. Anime is a genre of animation. There are many sub-genres within it.
Does claynime exist?
:
It's an easily recognizable subset of a larger art form.
Anime is a genre in the same way Western Animation is a genre
Yup.
Or like European techno. It has a very recognizable sound that differentiates it from other forms of techno. But there is still a lot of diversity within it. |
So basically my definition of genre is wrong to begin with?
I always thought of genres as romance, science-fiction, fantasy etc. |
I would have said that a genre is more specific than a style or tradition. Vague terms like "Western animation" or "Japanese animation" or whatever don't provide the same kind of information as what a more clearly defined category (such as "drama") would, instead only indicating the presence of the most ubiquitous features of a general style of the art.
The word can be used to describe so much more than just a narrative format.
The problem with calling Anime a style is that it isn't. There are too many art styles that fit into the larger idea of anime. The only reason I object to people saying anime isn't a genre is that it seems like they are implying that it is an art form all its own, completely separated from animation that isn't anime, and that it owes nothing for its creation other than to itself. I think it's fair to consider it a genre with many sub genres, but too limiting to consider it a style. |
I've been watching The Boondocks. It's anime style but it's nothing like any anime I've ever seen. Plus it's from the US, and no Japan.
Is it an anime? Serious question. A friend of mine told me once (long time ago) that it has to be from Japan to be anime. Sounds kind of dumb. |
