Should we wait for 1.8, though? I personally think we should.
Until then, we could just have a fuck-around server. We could even run the last backup of the old one and greif stuff. |
It doesn't matter to be quite honest. A Minecraft world is HUGE if it would be fully rendered. Even if we were to expand to a size as big as the previous server, we could still decide to collectively pack up and migrate to untouched land when 1.8 hits.
Compare our previous server world size to a small town in the US. When you're sick of that town you don't move to another planet, you just move to Japan and start over sort of speak. Minecraft worlds are literary big enough to do this. |
Also, I need some figures to decide on server location. I believe most of us are in Europe, correct?
|
What is a slot exactly? I was looking into gaming server out of curiosity about prices.... but I don't really get it. How does hosting rental work?
Personally...... I kinda need any money I have as Im moving to Romania for a few months... Otherwise Id probly donate some, but my economical situation is just a bit ... twitchy. |
Slots are the amount of available places for players. Most gaming servers have a predefined amount of slots and thus a fixed maximum amount of players at any given time.
In case of Minecraft the amount of players is heavily tied into the amount of RAM a server has available. So a cheap server will have the bare minimum assigned to it (512MB, which is enough to support 1 to 10 people) and it goes up from there. Prices vary a lot though. |
I don't think we get more than 6 or 7 people playing at once - Maybe we should just rent a cheap server for now (PROVIDED YOU MAKE WEEKLY BACKUPS) and if the server gets more popular later, consider changing hosts? (Though we'll lose everything in the nether like what happened last time)
I will make a donation as soon as my PP account is sorted, which will be very shortly. |
Happy happy update!
Just woke up to an e-mail from the hosting company, sent out by some of the former employees. Unlike their bastard boss, they are trying to set things straight and in doing so have negotiated a deal to have the server back online for a 72 hours window. Apparently they weren't reformated yet. Yay! So I just logged in and retrieved all our files. Even the Minecraft server is back online and all appears to be well. There's no use playing on it though, the files I retrieved are from a few seconds ago and will be what I will be transferring to the new server, so nothing done from here will be saved until the new server is up. I assume this changes things as far as the 'starting over' idea is concerned? |
I think we should see what changes with 1.8 before we finalise that decision.
|
Well whatever we decide can be decided later, for now I'm setting up and configuring the new server with the old world on it. We can always decide to start anew if we so desire.
|
That is some good news. Now we've got a chance to see what our stuff looks like incase we want to build it again.
|
New server, hosted with long time reliable hosting company Fragnet, is up and running. Everything is working like before, whitelist is back in place and on the backend we even for a few extra features like remote monitoring of the server.
The new server IP is 95.211.74.175:25865. With Fragnet we also got a free 10 slot TeamSpeak 3 server, which is awesome. I haven't set this up though since I'm at my GF's place. I'll be setting up TeamSpeak later today. Enjoy the new server! May it last longer than our previous one. |
Havoc, Don't suppose I could have the old's server map file if we ain't going to use that one again?
|
Yaaaay!

Nice one. I was expecting to see a new world, but instead, I found myself in Genesis Station once again. Shouldn't we just start working on a new world instead? I mean, if all's in favour for building a little town, I think it should give us plenty to do before 1.8, and we wouldn't need to explore much of the world for it either.
|
If we want to start a new place in a new wilderness, what's stopping us from just mass migrating to fresh lands in our current world? The world is basically infinite as it is, seems like a waste to just throw our current buildings away. And besides, we can leave our current settlement as a sort of legacy, ruins if you will :).
|
I agree with Havoc. Just teleport an op to 5000, 5000 or whatever.
|
I shall begin construction of a giant nether mass exodus rail!
|
Yey! My city wasn't deleted! :D
|
I think that its great we have our old world back :)
Also... if we DO decide to start anew.... I think its still possible to move regions from one world to another. I read that somewhere, so I think we could at least save RF. Also. A teamspeak server?? :D Does that mean we can finally voice cha officially? Edit: Weeeeeelll... I cant really connect to the server. Hm. |
I'd kind of like to see any current projects (Rupturefarms etc.) finished up, and then we break the map up into segments and scatter them randomly in a new map using a world editor.
That way, we can start anew, but we could end up stumbling across old buildings which would add a little bit of adventure and discovery to the world. |
I can't connect to the server to :/
And i'm not working on 2Fort online anymore, I've already started it on Single Player |
The server works just fine for me. I might aswell start making a Nether Portal or something.
EDIT: The Gravel shore Signs have been either updated or griefed in a terrible way! D: All the signs have been removed and replaced with lava and fire! What now? |
Probably the horrible monsters they were talking about! OMG!
|
:
I guess I have nothing else to do after I clean that cave up. |
You sound like a person being criticized on their work. Hmm...
|
Now that I think about it, most of Hula's visits to the server were checking up on the cave.
And most of his posts in this thread are about the cave. |
Well this is excellent news - Thanks so much, Havoc! :D I hope some lessons were learned from this though about backups. (BTW - It may not be a good idea to have the ip address directly on display here or we may get similar problems to last time)
lol, so I re-built the ground and first floor of Rupture Farms in Single Player for no apparent reason. :P Ah well though - I'm actually overjoyed that all that work I did wasn't a total waste of time and that I can continue it. Apparently MC Edit is a good program to use for copying blocks from one map to another, and like T-Nex suggested, if it works (I haven't tried it), it'll open up a bunch of new opportunities for us once 1.8 finally gets released. http://davidvierra.com/mcedit.html |
If it works, then it means we caqn go nuts on our current world, and just make a new one once 1.8 is out. Meaning we wont have to be annoyingly careful not to generate new land :p
|
Oh and something interesting - The original Nether from Dripik's server is back for some reason. Shame about the portals we lost though - Didn't someone build a big sandstone tower and bridge somewhere in a desert?
