Friday would have to be after 9 for me, but I don't mind waiting for DH's sake if no-one else does; he has contributed a lot and it would be cool for it to be filmed.

Havoc 09-07-2011 11:01 AM

I'm gonna try to update the server as soon as the update becomes available, but as usual there might be a small delay.

Manco 09-07-2011 11:03 AM

Yeah, I’m fine waiting for DH too. I’ve got tons of free time anyway.

Splat 09-07-2011 11:13 AM

If you go exploring before the exodus to Exoddus but after the update, don't go north or west.

Havoc 09-07-2011 12:54 PM

Guys I'd like to put up a small status image, either in the first post of this topic or in my signature, so we can more easily see how many people are online. It seems the busyness of the server is a big incentive for people to stick around and currently most of us are leaving as soon as we realize no-one is online, which is kind of a shame.

Only thing is that such an image will make the IP adres public and I know some of you are still hesitant about that, even though all security holes have since been patched up.

However I think that the pro's outweight the (non-existant) cons in this case. I think a status image can easily bring some more life into the server. Something like this:

http://cache.www.gametracker.com/ser...b_560_95_1.png

or this

http://cache.www.gametracker.com/ser...FFF_000000.png

Just to clarify on the security changes of the server since the 'incident':

1. Backups are made daily and stored on the server. If the world becomes corrupted somehow we'd lose 24 hours at the most.

2. I download the latest backup regularly (once a week on average, sometimes more). If the entire server decides to crap out we wouldn't lose months worth of work.

3. The server validates every user that tries to log in against the Minecraft.net user database. This means that someone can only log in if they own a legal copy of the game and has a valid account. Fake accounts (like the hacker using Notch's name) are therefor no longer possible. In fact, if the Minecraft.net server is down you can't log in at all.

4. The server uses a whitelist so only valid accounts of our own choosing are allowed to log in. Not even Notch could get in if he wanted to without being on the whitelist (which he happens to be, but that's beside the point).

All these things make it a little too paranoid to keep the IP a secret. There are hundreds of servers who have their IP open to the public and it rarely becomes a problem. And some of them have hundreds of slots and players to keep track of. We only have 15 at the most to deal with.

So all those who are opposed right now to a public IP, I'd like you to reconsider for the sake of the server. Right now I'm still the only one paying for it, and I don't mind that at all, I can spare the cash, but it's kind of a waste if the server is only populated for 3 out of 30 days. My 2 cents so far.

Splat 09-07-2011 01:20 PM

You make a convincing argument.

Havoc 09-07-2011 01:55 PM

Thank you.

Also, holy crap I just accidentally triggered the harvesting system in that grain farm. The lag from that thing is fucking insane, it's maxing out the server's resources. Can someone make it so that it doesn't do the entire field at once and locks the server up? I don't think our host is too happy with this sort of lag spikes on a regular basis. :p

STM 09-07-2011 02:02 PM

If you're worried about server population, open it to the public but start off anyone who logs on and as a sort of trial or probation class, then once they are trusted, give them building rights etc. That's what most servers do.

Havoc 09-07-2011 02:04 PM

We're not opening it to the public, it's just that some people fear that the server will fall victim to abuse if the IP is publicly known, which won't be the case or even possible. That's my point.

STM 09-07-2011 02:20 PM

Fair enough, just a suggestion is all.

Crashpunk 09-07-2011 02:37 PM

I'm getting ready for Exoddus and leaving 2fort behind. I'll try and be there tommorow.
Where are we meeting?

Splat 09-07-2011 02:59 PM

Are we going tomorrow or waiting an extra day for DH?

I guess whenever we meet, it'll be in the Genesis Depot portal room, or the Nether shelter.

I don’t think the update will be coming that soon—Minecraft Wiki speculates it’ll be released on Monday.

If it does though, I think most people have already agreed to wait.

Havoc 09-07-2011 03:36 PM

Yeah I think we should wait for DH as well. Have some fun with the Endermen around Genesis in the mean time ;)

BTW I've fixed the entry to Cursed Pick Cave, for anyone who wants to give it a try before we leave.

Ridg3 09-07-2011 03:42 PM

Wait, is there a new IP address? I think I'm still trying to use the shut down one.

Splat 09-07-2011 05:20 PM

Ah, release date has moved. Few more days left then.

How big is the backup file? If it isn't too crazy, set up a server script to automatically email the file to a Gmail account, then set up a Gmail filter to tag and archive the emails. That's what I do with my blog and it means that I never have to worry about not having access to the most recent backup.

Is there an official date? I can't seem to find one.

Splat 09-08-2011 03:08 AM

http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Adventure_Update

Says here.

Phylum 09-08-2011 04:18 AM

I've had an idea. If we come out of the portal in a mountain biome, we should build Exodus into the mountain.

Manco 09-08-2011 04:30 AM

I vote the new base should be like Tony Stark’s house.

Nate 09-08-2011 05:17 AM

I was going to suggest Hobbiton.

Splat 09-08-2011 06:13 AM

If a river runs nearby we have to call in Mongo and build Ma'Spa at its source.

Thats a good idea. Backup files are no more than 200mb so that should be doable. How would I go about setting this up?

Nate 09-08-2011 06:32 AM

How are you organising the auto-backup? Is it something in Minecraft or do you have a server-side script? Is it a Linux/Unix server? If yes, I could help you come up with something, but if it's a Windows server you'll need to Google it yourself.

Havoc 09-08-2011 07:57 AM

It's a Linux server with a server based admin interface that creates the backups. Those backups are then placed in a 'backups' folder.

Are rivers a part of the new terrain generation? If so, awesome.

Wil 09-08-2011 10:56 AM

Yes, but I don't think they have a source or any flow.

Splat 09-08-2011 01:07 PM

There do appear to be waterfalls, which would suggest the existence of source. Though I won't deny the possibility that rivers may have waterfalls going both ways (which would be very disappointing IMO).

Crashpunk 09-09-2011 12:45 AM

A settlement next to a River would be awesome.

Phylum 09-09-2011 02:42 AM

I'm packed and ready.

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1315561267

I'm going to try and have all of my assignments finished by Tuesday so I can indulge myself in a good few hours of 1.8.

dripik 09-09-2011 06:03 AM

I got inspired.

Splat 09-09-2011 06:52 AM

Darn, repped you to recently...

In other news, I can't make Monday. Going on a first aid course. Can we do Tuesday? Give people a day to get used to the hunger mechanic?

Sorry, peoples. Actually I don't know the exact time of the course so I might be available later in the evening. I'll tell when I know more.

Hulaabeo 09-09-2011 12:19 PM

Can't wait, I'm all packed! Of course I will have to make a second trip back...

Crashpunk 09-10-2011 05:24 AM

I'm ready as well, I have plenty of supplys I think and I have a new Skin :D

You know, it might be worth waiting to know there aren't any horrendous bugs before upgrading to 1.8. Remember how long beds didn't work? Nometheless, I'll try and get myself prepared over the weekend.

The Yogcast have a series of videos showing off the pre-release. The only thing I really noticed was that Endermen don’t seem to work properly in SMP.

Not to say there couldn’t be more bugs though.

Scraby 09-10-2011 06:46 AM

i found a bug for the furnaces, the game works fine but there are some lighting problems, the only thing that can crash a server or a world is starting a furnace, when 1.8 comes completely ill try to check it out to see if the furnace wont crash

dripik 09-10-2011 10:28 AM

Something occured to me concerning NPC villages. If the buildings and the NPCs are released in separate updates, I'd assume that the villages generated before 1.9 won't be populated with NPCs, since villages become like any other creation in the world once the generated, and MC won't be able to tell where to place NPCs. Unless there's some smart mechanic behind it.

In short, my worry is that if go out exploring around Exodus and find villages, they will remain NPCless even after 1.9.

We could move into the first one we find, then focus on building a home base until 1.9. Then, we launch a scouting party to find other signs of life. then we kill them
