I tried the demo for the first Dead Space, and I didn't like the gameplay. I think the problem was mostly that I didn't understand how to play the game, but I didn't really feel like trying to figure it out.

This is kind of how I felt - the controls just felt really cumbersome and the actual fighting was way too basic and repetitive, at least in the demo.

To this day I don't understand the praise Dead Space gets.

Nemo 01-12-2011 04:59 PM

I played Dead Space and I liked it. It was one of the few horror games I could actually force myself to play.

But that trailer convinced me that I do not want Dead Space 2.

Apparently the demo was really bad compared to the full game, Im going to borrow it from a friend soon, so Ill tell you all about it then.

My cousin and I spent several hours over the last 2 days playing Peggle on the iPod touch.

It's such a simple idea, but it's very addictive and incridably fun. Some of the shots that we made were statistically surreal.

I picked Jak 3 up again the other day. It's really great, but Haven City is nowhere near as good as the Jak II version. The gunplay is generally easier, too. The needle inducer and gyro thingy took lots of the stress out of the game.

The car physics are stupid, too. If you hold the handbreak as you land you stop almost dead regardless of forward momentum.

Dynamithix 01-12-2011 09:18 PM

I have Dead Space for the PC and I have to say, from what it looks like, PC seems to have better controls. Maybe it's just because I'm (or was) so used to the regular PC-shooter controls, don't know.

Anyways, I really enjoyed Dead Space and I might buy the second one, because it has multiplayer for fun with friends and the singleplayer for shitting bricks. Yay.

Mac Sirloin 01-12-2011 10:30 PM

Dead Space was good because A) It had some well done horror elements (that kept you on your toes rather than jump out at you) B) a very interesting story that fit the atmosphere and C) genuinely challenging horror-shooter gameplay.

It's that expensive a game anymore, and you could probably find it for below ten dollars used. It's worth that, at least.

Dead Space 2 on the other hand looks like they tried way too hard to coolify it. It's been officially stated that it's going to be easier, Isaac will talk a bunch, and is pretty much just a Space Marine now.

The collectors set looks fun, though.

In the distant future, societial standing will be determined by Peggle ability.

Expanded my animal kingdom in Spore again. I doubt I will ever tire of playing God.

Those don't sound like inherently bad things.

Ridg3 01-14-2011 12:41 AM

Because of MM I have decided to give Spore a whirl again and create another penis creature. About the only fun thing in the game... the rest is just meh.

Those don't sound like inherently bad things.

And they're not. They're just making it more accessible for people, but I loved the first game, so it's kind of crappy having a lot of the parts I liked being pooped on. The only thing I'm really picky about is Isaac being conversational. I would let it all slide if he just kept his pie-hole shut.

Would anyone like to see what it looks like when a major gaming company like Capcom decides to just completely steal a game from a small Indie developer? Yes? Well, here you go. Enjoy MaXplosion

This is unmistakeably shitty and dumb, but then they do things like release Resident Evil 4 in its entirety for 4.99 in the App Store.

OANST 01-18-2011 10:20 AM

Abbey is going to buy Little Big Planet 2 with her own money tonight. So, we'll be playing that for a while.

Bullet Magnet 01-18-2011 10:31 AM

How'd she find a job in this market?

OANST 01-18-2011 10:33 AM

She's a hard worker.

She's good at saving the money she gets for reading books with no mistakes.

Mac Sirloin 01-18-2011 12:47 PM

Your daughter has better economic sense than me.

Phylum 01-18-2011 03:53 PM

Holy shit. I forgot LBP2 is coming out tomorrow here. I'm a bit glad that my friend cancelled our plans for tomorrow.

OANST 01-19-2011 07:25 AM

I'm disappointed with LBP2. Everything that was wrong with the first game was left exactly as it was. Sure, they put in a bunch of new features (most of which could have easily been dlc for the first game), but they left in the terrible jumps, and crappy physics. I shit you not, they fixed nothing.

metroixer 01-19-2011 08:29 AM

So it's more of a 60(?) dollar expansion pack than a new game? That sounds like a rip, hopefully your daughter is enjoying it at least?

I got sucked into the iOS gaming craze and bought angry birds and Oregon Trail. Angry birds is fun for short intervals when you're waiting for 10 minutes of class to pass by or something. Oregon Trail is kind of a bastardized version of the original (dying is hard, you can't hunt whenever you want, a bunch of dumb minigames) but I got it for sale for a buck so I can't complain.

And yet it gets very high reviews. Why is that? Sure it's fun for an hour or too with a buddy, but really? 9 out of 10?

Anyways, I bought Dead Rising 2 a while ago and I think it's really good. Still, I hate the time system in the game. I'd really like to explore Fortune City more and do more sidemissions, but I just have to keep looking for Zombrex and try to do the cases. Otherwise I really like it, combo weapons are great, some of them are hilarious. Also, co-op is pretty fun, but let me tell you a huge downside of the co-op;

Me and my friend bought Dead Rising 2 in hope of playing through the story together, but only the host can properly save. That's right, if you're the one who joined the game, you won't be able to save anything else but (possibly) your costume and some minor changes.

If they would fix that particular thing, this could be one of my favourite games.

OANST 01-19-2011 08:33 AM

To be fair, my complaints have to do with controls while the game is mainly judged by what it gives you the freedom to create. And that freedom is enormous. The sequel adds quite a few things that will allow for some pretty amazing new levels.

But goddamn did they need to fix the control problems. And they didn't.

Daxter King 01-19-2011 12:55 PM

Its because most people will defend bad controls, citing that they are "different". The developers might not have known it to be a problem. I have seen people defend input lag, saying that it "gives weight" to movements. Gamers are a sad bunch.

Elmatto753 01-19-2011 01:05 PM

I don't find it a problem. Besides if they "fixed" the physics then all of the levels from LBP1 wouldn't work properly.

Except that they would still work fine if you just pop in the first games' disk. This is a sequel. I expected a sequel to, at the very least, attempt to address the one complaint that is universally lodged against the first game.

Phylum 01-19-2011 02:12 PM

I wrestled with the controls in LBP for a while and I'm a bit disappointed to hear that they didn't fix the issues for the sequel. The thing about LBP that surprised me was my desire to wrestle with the controls so that I could find new stuff to put in my levels.

I think the smarter people in the community will create their own platforming sackbots using the direct input controls to better MM's control issues.

Too bad you don't have a phone that can use Flash. You could have played Crush the Castle online for free and not bought in to the cult of its pale imitation.

EDIT: Just had a thought. Ironically, Crush the Castle's controls are probably even better suited to a touch screen than Angry Birds' are. I never felt AB was accurately following the direction my finger was directing it to go.

Phylum 01-19-2011 06:22 PM

I bought LittleBigPlanet2 for $82.

It feels exactly the same. Not one difference in the core mechanics.

The grappeling hook is cool, though. The up and down is too touchy for my tastes but I'm sure I'll get used to it (not that I'm excusing it's horridness).

I'm yet to try the create mode. I'll be sure to tell you all when my Oddworld level is finished.

Yeah, the physics of angry birds feels really weird, go slightly up and you fly over everything. Go slightly down, and the bird plops straight to the ground.

It's why I play it on short intervals, otherwise I get frustrated :\

The up and down is way too touchy. You try to get a good swing going, only to have it completely destroyed because the damn thing thinks that you want to start climbing up it. I didn't play it at all yesterday. I played Half-Life 2 instead. Partly because it's Abbey's game, and I don't want to unlock levels she hasn't done, and partly because I preferred to replay Half-Life 2 than deal with the stupidity of the controls.

I tried that on the first game, but couldn't get the silgs to walk. I gave up.

Phylum 01-20-2011 05:19 PM

I'm going to see if I can use a Sackbot/createnator combination for sligs.

I've finished all of the create tutorials now, too, so I have every tool at my disposal. I'm impressed by the logic stuff. People wrote mechanical calculators in LBP and they're going to write whole computers with this game.

I'm currently just dicking around in create mode and trying out some fun vehicles that I've been shabbily constructing. I'm going to make a versus level after that.

Dixanadu 01-21-2011 03:10 AM

Rise of the Argonauts.

It's ...okay. The plot is pretty good, though.

Thanks to Amazon's uselessness I don't even have it yet...:fuzsad:

Alf Shall Rise 01-23-2011 07:51 AM

Right now I'm playing Fallout New Vegas.

So far I like it. I think it's a bit glitchy here and there, but it's a fun game so far. I just recruited Boone, and although he's a nice addition, he's always stealing my kills.

The Catalyst 01-23-2011 07:58 AM

Just finished Kingdom Hearts Re:coded.

All in all it's a good game but the story of the game itself is somewhat irrevelent to the rest of the series (It's just another KH 1 rehash) and the only important things happen at the end. I like the fact that they used the command system from Birth By Sleep too, that has to be the best battle system they made. The game is a step-up from 358/2 days graphically but I kinda liked the panel system and the multiplayer on that one.

Phylum 01-23-2011 01:55 PM

I thought CoM was stretching it, but to redo the KH1 story again was just too much.

The secret ending is exciting, though.

The Catalyst 01-23-2011 03:58 PM

At least CoM was important. Re:coded is all been there done that up until the end, theres not even any new characters introduced we've seen them all already.

Daxter King 01-24-2011 01:36 PM

Borrowed Dead Space from a friend, really into it to far. Its kinda easy, although Im only on Chapter 3. Anyone have any advice on where to put power nodes? Im hording them right now.

Dixanadu 01-24-2011 02:35 PM

Health or weapon damage, unless you're playing on Casual, just use them to open certain doors. Dead people like stuffing expensive shit to sell in there.

Phylum 01-24-2011 02:46 PM

I finished LBP2's story mode. I'm now proceeding to dick around with vehicles in create mode.

Daxter King 01-26-2011 10:12 PM

Got to Chapter 7 of Dead Space, glad to have some genuine dread and its not just pop out scares.

God damn, that invincible thing is scary every time you fight it. Whenever I got to the room where a bunch of the fat things were around I heard a crash, and knew it was in the room. I turn around to get some distance between me and the fat things, and BAM that thing was right behind me. Scared the shit out of me, I missed with stasis and started screaming some incomprehensible sounds. My friends couldn't tell if i was scared or just acting stupid at first.

Also been playing a lot of the Bulletstorm and Crysis 2 demos. Enjoy Bulletstorm a lot more, and find myself trying to improve my score a lot. Crysis 2 isn't as fun as it was in the beta, I don't think I will purchase it anymore.

Mac Sirloin 01-26-2011 11:45 PM

I started playing Dead Space 2 with Jordan yesterday. It's pretty great, but a little frustrating in 'ambush' rooms, specifically because of the acid Necromorphs. Fuckers slow you down with...phlegm.
