OANST 09-11-2009 07:36 AM

What is it with this place and it's metal fascination? Don't any of you want art from people who actually have something intelligent to say?

Dixanadu 09-11-2009 07:38 AM

I listen to Dream Theater?

OANST 09-11-2009 07:40 AM

It's a start, I suppose.

MeechMunchie 09-11-2009 08:27 AM

Keane good enough for you?

OANST 09-11-2009 08:42 AM

Ew, no.

MeechMunchie 09-11-2009 10:38 AM

Then good day to you Sir.

Such a minute amount of music has anything intelligent to say.

OANST 09-11-2009 10:54 AM

I don't know, man. I'm having a hard time keeping up with all of the good stuff that came out this year.

Wings of Fire 09-11-2009 12:13 PM

I only listen to music with narrative, esoteric overtones or messages about social equality. How amazingly pretentious am I!

I listen to music that I can picture something happening to. Too Drunk Too Fuck? Driving around. The "Final Battle" music from MGS3? Huge as fuck robot duking it out with another robot. Digging at people for enjoying metal because they don't "have something intelligent to say" is just stupid. Why should people care what the bands have to say if they can just enjoy the music for being music? I know you how you operate, music wise, but obviously not everyone has your same tastes. Don't bitch people out because of that.

OANST 09-11-2009 01:15 PM

It has only a bit to do with taste. Good/bad music is fairly easily quantifiable. Use this formula: Intent/Content/Execution. The execution of the intent is worth far more than just plain execution. Just because a person can play well, or fast doesn't make what they are playing good. For instance, if the most talented painter in the world paints nothing but big breasted women... well it probably isn't good art. Although, that does still depend on his intent. It certainly makes a difference if he is attempting to say something by painting pictures of women with big breasts (depending on what that something is).

I look at music as art. Not as mere entertainment. I will, repeat WILL let you know when you are pouring shit art into your ears. It's a public service.

Mac Sirloin 09-11-2009 01:28 PM

Okay, that explains it a bit more. I think it's still better to have some music that just sounds good for no other reason than it sounding good.

OANST 09-11-2009 01:33 PM

There is plenty of music out there that is like that. Not every song has to have a statement, or be brilliant. I just require them to not be mind-numbingly stupid, is all.

Mac Sirloin 09-11-2009 01:44 PM

That explains why the Offspring is not for you.

Seriously some of the most preachy shit ever, littered with some somewhat amusing songs.

Cetanu 09-11-2009 02:06 PM

I've been listening to Evanescence and Antonamasia more and more, dunno if anyone's heard of them, though. >.>

OANST 09-11-2009 02:07 PM

I have to stop coming in here.

Cetanu 09-11-2009 02:10 PM

Why is that?

Leto 09-11-2009 03:15 PM

LOL

also if you're getting into this whole art debarkle Matt, surely metal could be seen as low art ie dadaism or shit for the sake of being shit.

and I mean noise, come on. everything is art. entirely subjective.

THIS !!

Maybe it`s just me but I don`t find the need to delve to deeply into why I like
a song or a group for that matter. I just like it.
Don`t even need to relate that much.
Spend a shitload of time listening to older Blues and R&B tunes and have never been:

black
destitute
had " another mule kick`n in my stall"
a heroin addict
a fool fo yo britches (ahh, well maybe)
worried about " my raggedy ass ford"
concerned that "that man down there might be yo man, I don`t know"
stuck in Detroit with no job
stuck in Chicago with no job
stuck in Memphis with no job
remotely concerned about Smokestack Lighting, what ever the hell that is.

I have however, been commode-hugging-drunk in more than a couple of strange cities and once in Lubbock Tx. had a hulking roughneck show me his
Colt Commander to impress the point that he was not to keen on me dancing with his main squeeze.

Guess you don`t need the blues to dig the Blues ;)

Leto 09-11-2009 03:25 PM

being something has absolutely nothing to do with appreciating something

for instance, I might enjoy porngrind, but I don't fuck the open wounds of a recently deceased carcass.

YES

AND

Music is whatever. Whether it is screaming or whining like a dying dolphin*. The only music I can't really stand is modern rap. And that is only because of that AWFUL VOICE EFFECT THAT IS IN EVERY SONG

*thom yorke lol

Leto 09-11-2009 10:06 PM

i actually have field recordings of dolphins/whales/narwhals, shits pretty awesome. hour long mp3s even.

I've not read the 22 pages of this topic so I'm not entirely sure about what the argument is at this time, although I'm just going to shove in the music to which I listen, and hope it sparks some strange debate or is relevant to a debate that is currently in progress.

I listen to:
Led Zeppelin
ZZ Top
Cake
Gorrilaz
Pendulum
Limp Bizkit
The Offspring

... and others I am unable to remember at this time.

Any form of self expression is art. Absolutely. I would never deny that. I'm merely saying that much of it is bad.

As for the whole shit for the sake of being shit, when it is that I can appreciate that. But I think that we both know that the vast majority of metal bands are dead fucking serious about it. You don't honestly think that Korn and Disturbed are being ironic, do you?

Dixanadu 09-12-2009 09:28 AM

Most metal bands sound the exact same. Godsmack, Breaking Benjamin and Soil are fine examples.

I mostly listen to bands that's vocalist is unique in their performance, the lyrics are deep and of course, the gootarz.

That's all well and good, but most metal fans don't differentiate. Sure, they have their own individual tastes, some like it fast, some loud, some brutal, but in the end they are merely "metal" fans. They become so caught up in the genre that they miss all of this beautiful, important music that is being made elsewhere. Plus, there is so little music that comes from the metal community that is of any value, that I find it strange that otherwise intelligent people can't see it for what it is, and break away.

I assume that it has something to do with "belonging" to something, to "being about something". But is it worth belonging to? I'm sorry. It really isn't.

Hobo 09-12-2009 11:33 AM

Please don't tell me you're clumping all of metal together. Grindcore and Prog metal are as different as hip hop and trance.

This.

There are fuck knows how many generas of metal. Sure its all under that blanket term, but some of them are just so different it's not even worth bunching it together like that. Totally different styles of music.

But yeah, OANST is sort of right. I like most metal, but it isn't by any means the be all and end all.

I'm concerned mostly with the culture of "I'm so angry" rock. Anyone who is genuinely as angry as these people appear to be are ridiculous morons who just haven't quite gotten the "I'm in charge of my own destiny" idea down yet. The ones who aren't genuinely that angry are worse. They are just cashing in on the angsty teenagers.

Some of it tongue in cheek, and some of it is genuinely honest and thoughtful. I get that. And I listen to that stuff, as well. But most of it isn't. 99 percent of it is fucking terrible.
