Don't underestimate modern medicine!

Crashpunk 06-07-2015 11:59 AM

Finally... fucking FINALLY.

After almost 150 hours on and off playing over the course of 3 years. I've finally beaten Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King.

Without a doubt my favorite PS2 game and one of my favorite games of all time.

Seriously guys, If your a RPG and/or a JRPG fan, you NEED to play this game. I'm not even that big on JRPGs but this game was fucking incredible.
This game is huge. A grand adventure taking the player to every possible location, battling hundreds of different enemies and encountering loads of unique characters. A massive amount of complexity to the gameplay. Tons of items, weapons and spells. The characters are lovable and memorable, the story is wonderful. Aaaaah this game just so is fantastic.

Hell, I'm not even 100% done yet. Still got a few things to do post game.

It's coming to the 3DS in Japan soon, hopefully it will be available over here in the EU and the US.

150 hours over 3 years? Were u playing 5 minutes a day? Ive logged more hours on mortal kombat in a month...

With the announcement that Xcom-2 will be PC exclusive I went from super happy to incredibly depressed. Then I started playing Skulls of the shogun. Its a 2D turn based strategy game in the same style as xcom, without the permadeath and a lovely hand drawn animated style. great sense of humour, and ive been addicted. I was supposed to speedrun Dust yesterday... and then I played skulls for 9 hours straight. And if something stops me from speedrunning, u know its special.

Crashpunk 06-08-2015 06:42 AM

Good for you. I've logged over 2,000 hours in both TF2 and Dota 2 within 6 years. I have 71.0 hours on Steam in past 2 weeks. Not everything is a fucking competition dude.

The reason why I've clocked that many hours in over 3 years is I had huge on and off periods playing the game. The longest being almost 9 months. Usually, I'd play for a few hours then leave it for a few days. But I decided to come back to it this year and finally beat it.

I'm the sorta guy who gets a new game, plays that instead and leaves the old game to gather dust. I'm trying to change my ways this Year.

Mr. Bungle 06-08-2015 01:04 PM

I played through Final Fantasy VI and now am quickly becoming addicted to JRPGs. Help

Dunno if any of them will live up to VI, though. It was such a fucking treat from beginning to end. Great characters with a lot of heart, and, well, character. Those fifty hours (though I think a decent chunk of those may have been from leaving the game on overnight) went by way too fast. So fast in fact that I've already started a second play-through. I can't remember the last time I did that. Amazing game, would probably land somewhere in my top ten if ever bothered to make such a list.

Now I'm playing VII and V simultaneously (mostly VII because emulators are so awkward for me) and it's a lot better than I remember. Definitely lives up to the hype, but I much prefer the variety in the combat of VI. Those pre-rendered backgrounds and cutscenes are top-notch, however.

Dunno where to go next. Wasn't really feeling V, apart from the cool Jobs system, so I might go for one of the fan favourites (IV or IX). Help me waste my time, FF nerds!

Not everything is a fucking competition dude.

Never said it was. Just cuz im heavily into competitive multiplayer doesnt mean everything that comes out of my mouth is E-sports. No need to be so aggressive, I was just confused because thats so opposite to how I do things. If I left a single player game for longer than a week, more than likely ill have to restart because i would have played and learnt 6 games in between. Its only multiplayer games I go back to. If its single player, and I dont speedrun it, Ill play it for its completion, maybe a bit more for completionist reasons, and then never touch it again.

Crashpunk 06-09-2015 07:51 AM

Sorry. But the way you said that came off as a little pretentious and snarky. Especially since how your so competitive. My bad dude. :)

Yeah sometimes I just start single player games all over again if I haven't played them in a while. For a big RPG like Dragon Quest however. That's a lot of progress lost.

Shade667 06-09-2015 08:24 PM

I meant it as a light hearted joke, but apparently im not good at jokes.

Mr. Bungle 06-10-2015 11:35 AM

I've been playing a lot of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend over the past couple days, and I think I've both calloused and bruised my thumb as a result. Worth it, though. The fighting is fun as fuck, even if I'm pretty terrible, the story, characters and variety of game modes keeps both interested, and consistently (albeit slowly) improving my skill level.

It's pretty also hilarious, so brownie points for that. Yep, definitely worth the twelve bucks.

I'm having lot of fun with Massive Chalice (available on Steam, but free right now on Xbone with Xbox Live Gold). I particularly enjoy the stealth mechanics and the hybrid Brewtalist class, and the voice work and aesthetics are charming. I trawled through the available bloodlines for my starting heroes to give them the most amusing battle cries. "Not in the face!"

I appreciate that they didn't go with the standard fantasy classes. Instead of Fighter, Wizard, Rogue, there's Caberjack (wielding a caber, a one-man battering ram), the Alchemist (artillery, tossing exploding flasks and jars of bees using a bladed thrower that doubles as a melee weapon in a pinch), and the Hunter (who can enter stealth with a huge shoulder-mounted crossbow, like a cross between a bazooka and a ballista).

When you appoint a hero as the Regent of a keep, their kids will be raised in the same class. But if the Regent's partner is of a different class, the trainees will be a hybrid class, making nine classes in total. Such as the Trickshot, a Hunter/Alchemist mix who can tie his flasks to his arrows, or the Caberjack/Hunter Shadowjack, who can somehow creep around in stealth pulling off sneak attacks with an enormous log. I certainly never saw Stealthy Log-Wacker in any DnD book I ever read.

There also seems to be simulated genetics, which appears to be a simple Mendelian model. So pair off your heroes wisely. If your eugenics program isn't up to snuff, by the end game your heroes will be weak and feeble. There's no inbreeding feature in the game, but because it of the simulated genetics it will happen for the same reason it does in real life. My bloodlines were plagued with low-XP gains because of it until I instigated some serious adoption and recruitment efforts. And don't even get me started on their rampant alcoholism.

I'm replaying Deus Ex: Human Revolution on PC at the moment. About 14 hours in right now, I'm at the Picus News Station part right now so about halfway through if I remember correctly. Having a lot of fun with it, still a very good game. I'm doing a stealth playthrough (of course). Hope Square Enix show a gameplay demo of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided at E3.

Loves HR. Neer played Deus ex 1 or 2. Well, I played the PS2 version of Deus ex on PS3, but only like the tutorial.

I never completed my stealth playthrough. I was doing a ghost playthrough, made it about halfway. If Mankind divided gives me the option Ill do it though.

Manco 06-12-2015 08:02 AM

DE:HR is a really great stealth game, I can’t imagine playing the guns-blazing way.

AlexFili 06-12-2015 12:34 PM

Along with Splatoon (which is very innovative) I've been playing Starbound, Civ V, XCOM and also an Early Access game called H1Z1. At first I wasn't quite sure if it would be for me, but after watching some videos I decided to give it a go.

It is a fun game with friends and in particular the Battle Royale mode provides endless fun with random spawns, vehicles and an ever-closing poison gas cloud which eliminates anyone who stays in it too long. When it gets down to the final 10 people, the game becomes increasingly tense as you never quite feel safe and often you die quickly if caught off guard. For those who want a break from PvP there's a variety of PvE servers where you can co-operate in peace without fear of betrayal.

My first playthrough was more a mix. Do stealth until I got caught then resort to brute force. My second (which I never finished) was a ghost plythrough, aka dont be detected. I was doing it for a trophy, there were 2, no kills besides bosses and dont be detected. Definatley brought up the challenge.

Crashpunk 06-13-2015 12:50 AM

Super Metroid.

I picked up the boxed version on the SNES. Complete with the manual. Needless to say, it's was pricey. But the game itself is so bloody fantastic, it was worth it.

The gameplay is excellent, the graphics are some of the best on SNES, the soundtrack adds to the creepy and lonely atmosphere. It's one of those games which is hard to find anything wrong with it honestly. Aside from annoying bits like the sinking sand. This is without a doubt one of the best Nintendo games I've ever played. A classic.

Shade667 06-13-2015 08:35 PM

Metroid prime > Super Metroid.

Totally not because ive only played the prime games and not the originals.

Crashpunk 06-14-2015 09:18 AM

There was literally no reason for you to make that comment.

Go play the originals.

Varrok 06-14-2015 09:19 AM

Seems like CP beat you to play the originals, Shade.

Such a shame. Better luck next time, loser.

Shade667 06-14-2015 08:34 PM

Never owned a nintendo console before the wii. And I dont think Id enjoy em anyway. Theyre so dated I think youd need nostalgia to enjoy them.Same with the zelda series.

Varrok 06-14-2015 09:41 PM

I started playing Zelda games like a few months ago and they turned out to be amazing.

Shade667 06-15-2015 01:07 AM

I liked Okami alot. I hear thats like zelda.

As far as metroidvania games go, Ive only played guacamelee and Dust: an elysian tail, and both are combat and platforming focused rather than exploration. I just dont have that desire to backtrack through a game, and while I like the world of metroid, the atmosphere and such, it was much more immersive in the prime series.

Crashpunk 06-15-2015 05:34 AM

Do your self a favor Shade. Actually play Nintendo games before commenting on them.

Nintendo games; New and old, are amazing. They're just good fun. Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid. These franchises are iconic for a reason. I've followed Nintendo closely than any other gaming company because they always deliver excellent games with creative ideas.

Also i'd say you don't need any nostalgia to enjoy them. All nostalgia does is add to your enjoyment. Perhaps it can shroud you when it's a really old game, but I feel the majority of older titles still hold up to this day.

Shade667 06-15-2015 08:26 PM

Im not saying they're bad. Im saying from the perspective of someone who hasnt played them they're not interesting. In the future when I actually have a PC and some free time I might get an emulator for them (cuz im not scrounging the internet for 20 yr old nintendo consoles).

Problem is, im an artist. And Im also very critical of both others and myself. So If the games look like crap its gonna affect my enjoyment of it. Thats why I like 2D games, as in stuff like rayman. Cuz the art will always hold up. 8bit - 16bit games dont do much for me, and animation is a big factor to my enjoyment as well.

But you never know. Again, from an observer they dont look as amazing as people say, but I wont know for sure until Ive played them, so I can only say "from an observing point blah blah blah" until that happens.

Varrok 06-15-2015 10:34 PM

Castlevania 1 is art.

Manco 06-16-2015 07:06 AM

Gonna agree with Shade here, I don’t own any Nintendo consoles except a 3DS and other than Pokemon no Nintendo franchise really grabs my interest.

Crashpunk 06-16-2015 07:10 AM

I always say if your new to Nintendo games, Try out Zelda. I think Zelda is nintendo's finest franchise honestly.

Shrykull43 06-17-2015 09:00 PM

Dear esther anyone? more of an art project than a game really though

Phylum 06-18-2015 05:58 PM

Got bored of how clunky Daggerfall was, so I started Morrowind instead. The epic quest of Colin Morgan the wizard has so far involved collecting a lot of eggs. I also stole a bunch of shit from some woman's desk while doing a mage's guild quest, and now I've moved into some dead dude's house, because apparently you're allowed to do that. The butler doesn't even give a fuck, it's amazing.

Fun game though. Much better than Daggerfall. It lacks the epic scale, but makes up for it with much more content. For example - the overworld actually serves a purpose and you can't just fast travel everywhere.

Varrok 06-18-2015 07:54 PM

Um. You can. Use the boat/still rider/gondola system.
