Ouch, I hope they did it right and that this will not result in people unwittingly quicksaving at awfull places by touching it by accident. I have to admit I didn't hold a PS4 controller yet so I'm not sure my concerns make any sense.

It's difficult to hit it accidentally, but if you do (and you do quicksave) in a bad spot the worst case is you can just pop back to the nearest checkpoint.

It's really intuitive after about 5 minutes.

Xavier 06-20-2014 02:06 AM

Ok sounds fine to me, thank you for clarifying.
This now makes me wonder how this will translate on the Xbox One's controller.

Pretty sure the publishers would rather you bought the mag :)

I tried to lol. I went to my news agency next door to my shop and they dont stock Playstation magazine. Only Xbone and other ones like hyper and such.

Holy Sock 06-20-2014 03:55 AM

I can't that that much credit...it was on Oddworld's twitter..........

But you can buy it here.

Or I think you can buy an app to read it on your phone/iPad if you have one.

Well, in one of the videos the Scrab does the classic stomp animations.

I hope so, I was missing this animation in the recent gameplay videos.

Reading the E3 articles on Oddworld.com it seems that GameSpeak is entirely controlled using the D-Pad - which is interesting.

EDIT: Also there's another interview with Lorne by Pocket Gamer.

Holy Sock 06-22-2014 10:56 AM

Lorne dropped some info on Munch that I've never heard before.

Munch was supposed to be a Jekyll & Hyde type character - so, if he was slapped around too much, he would turn into this monstrous hulking creature due to the steroid testing done to him.

Pirfsich 06-22-2014 11:27 AM

That's known since 2012(or 2002 respectively).
Without re-watching it, I think he says it in this video:
EDIT: yes, at min 6

Not entirely true. D-pad on its own does the Mudokon / Slig communicative things (hello, follow me, etc) and R2 acts as a 'shift' key to double up the D-pad for things like whistling.

Holy Sock 06-22-2014 03:01 PM

I figured but I didn't clarify. Just thought it was cool that we have instant voice commands now.

It's in the book. He's called Roid.

Holy Sock 06-22-2014 04:11 PM

That's pretty nuts. Man, if only Munch's Oddysee was being made today - all of Lorne's self-admitted unrealistic ambitions sound like they would have made a really interesting game.

Pirfsich 06-23-2014 02:29 AM

It's still too early for a Munch's Oddysee Remake.

Xavier 06-23-2014 02:56 AM

Yes, plus it will not really benefit from the same nostalgia factor as Abe's Oddysee did.

brechtos 06-23-2014 03:06 AM

I had the opportunity to play the demo on the E3 show floor. JAW did an amazing job, they handled the secret areas really well :3 and stayed true to the original while making it all work with a scrolling camera. Can't wait to play it again on release :D

Holy Sock 06-23-2014 03:06 AM

I meant instead of all the way back in 2001. I don't think we'll see a Munch remake at all. Maybe Munch's Exoddus but more likely Squeek's Oddysee will be the next game featuring Munch.

Thanks for sharing your impressions. :)
So, how does Abe access the secret areas that are hidden behind barrels?

Also, how come you were allowed at E3? Are you working for a magazine?

EDIT:

As this is the E3 topic I feel like this is the right place to put it: all oddworld related Interviews and Gameplay videos that were taken at E3 are now available on TOGG. Feel free to point out if I missed some. :D

Damn it Ă–mer, it was always colorfuly! Lanings knows what he's doing.

MeechMunchie 06-23-2014 07:43 AM

It's funny because he's foreign.

Pirfsich 06-23-2014 07:51 AM

I've read way worse things than this.
Like recently, a foreign family handing out Flyers to find her lost daughter with "Vermiest" (spoiled) instead of "Vermisst" (missing) as the title. (That's german)

I laughed although I shouldnt.

Crashpunk 06-23-2014 03:42 PM

That guy has better spilling than me.

JennyGenesis 06-24-2014 04:20 AM

I really hope there is a classic control scheme.

Holy Sock 06-24-2014 04:40 AM

I doubt it. All the reports I've heard have said that the new control scheme works well and is very responsive.

Ha, that's awesome. Did you come and say Hi?

I sure did :).
I was wearing the custom Oddworld T-shirt had to dress for the occasion :fuzwink:.
Was nice though because wherever I went I kept being stopped by people asking about the shirt and getting all excited when I told them that there was a new Oddworld game being showed on the floor. Got really good at giving directions to the Oddworld stand by the end of the day :p

If you pay close attention you can see hatches that can be opened on the floor for example. It's a nice and clean way to still keep the original hidden areas without breaking the look and feel.

You can also throw bottle caps now to distract sligs. Handy little new feature that helps out with the fact that you can no longer reset screens and so forth.

Overall I had a smile on my face the entire time. Looked really polished, played great, sounded great, still had challenge, handy quicksave (although quickloading after the death reset had been triggered did fire the area respawn after allready having loaded the quicksave, non gamebreaking little polish thing). Felt like Abe's Oddysee in a modern new package :)

The player controller also felt really great and responsive. Does take some getting used to as I kept using the old games layout but once adjusted it controlled really well.

Also, how come you were allowed at E3? Are you working for a magazine?

I am a final year student at Digital Arts and Entertainment a game dev school in Belgium.
For the past 4.5 months I have been doing my internship at a small startup game company based in the UK.

Due to a wild series of events and hard work we got invited by Microsoft to be part of the first batch of indies to be part of and showcased by ID@Xbox, Microsofts indie development program. So for E3 they invited a whole bunch of little studios to be part of the Microsoft booth and show of their games to the public similar to what they did this year during GDC.

Still can't believe it that I was given the opportunity to come along, help man the booth and meet and talk to so many other amazing developers and personal heroes of mine :fuzzle:

Nope, just the New 'n' Tasty one.
