Fixing everything was less fun. You could get the shields back up, but it took forever.

Also been playing Gods Eater Burst on my PSP

Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is one of my favourite ever fighters, great series.

I'm playing Gods Eater Burst too. It's like Monster Hunter but about a trillion times more accessible. It actually broke the MH spell since I just stopped playing those games entirely.

I really love DBZ fighters, they're like nothing else. I tried to think of something clever like 'Once you go Bardock you never go Backock' but that's not very good. I'm thinking about buying or borrowing another next gen system just to play the newer, prettier games.

Phylum 12-09-2012 06:24 PM

I've started and finished Jak 2 in the last week. It takes me just over 10 hours now, and I know exactly what I'm doing.

The lack of checkpoints really creates a lot of fake difficulty. Some of the sections are so tedious and/or unclear it's disheartening when one slightly off jump sets you back another 5 minutes. The platforming is solid, but the gunplay was a pain in the arse as always. It works well against Metal Heads, but when you get a wall of Krimson Guards it's almost impossible not to take damage without using spam tactics, or the Peace Maker if you have it.

The hoverbike physics are rediculous. It's jet powered, so I just can't understand why there's no air control going over jumps. Also, the zoomers used for racing can turn 90° corners without too much effort. You're even required to make a few stupid turns in the one street race. The Class One race is really infuriating. The course is almost designed to ensure that it's a close finish between you and Erol. This means that even if you race flawlessly for a majority of the course he'll somehow catch up at the end. One slightly off corner at the end can cost an otherwise perfect race. The need to take every shortcut to stay ahead of him irked me, too. He doesn't always take them, why should I have to?

The jetboard is amazing fun. The titan suit let the end half of the game down, especially the underwater level. There were some groat, stressful moments that really forced you to take a step back and think. Jak 2 is easily one of the best platformers ever, but especially from the PS2 era. I can't wait to get started on the mostly superior sequel.

Mr. Bungle 12-09-2012 06:49 PM

I've only played Jak and Daxter, and I thought it was a fantastic 3D platformer. It had everything a good platformer needed: bright, vibrant colours; a large, open area to explore; a wonderful array of funny and delightful characters; lots of variety in the game mechanics; and a lovable, innocent duo of protaganists.

Jak 2 (from the two hours or so that I've played of it) didn't really have much of this, so I was a bit disappointed. I would have kept playing it though, if my disc hadn't of gotten so scratched up.

Phylum 12-09-2012 08:09 PM

Neither game is really that open, but they both do a fairly good job of making working through linear paths feel like exploration. The only difference is that Jak 2 only opens certain paths at certain times through various mechanics, whereas the first game had levels like the Snowy Mountains where there were 3 different paths you could go down from the beginning.

The hub world of Jak 2 is really bland and boring, sadly. It works well in missions, but moving between points can just get really tiring. Maybe I've played it too much, but there is really only one path connecting most points.

The 3rd is the strongest in the series by a long way. It had a much more interesting hub in Sargus, but the changes they made to Haven City when you go back there make it much more tolerable. It feels more hectic and cluttered, but after playing #2 again that's really a good thing. It's a pity it was so much easier than the others.

Crashpunk 12-10-2012 03:08 AM

I've got to disagree with you Phylum, I love Jak 2. I have to admit, I agree with the movement through Haven City was boring, but I actually thought the world was interesting enough, I liked how it was split up into different areas like the rich and poor districts and the flying ships were fun to mess around in, kinda reminded me of GTA.

I thought the atmosphere of some missions were really great, especially ones in the sewers; they had you really on edge. And I liked the storyline. How Jak has turned from a young silent protagonist from the first game into a much older and seriously pissed off guy. It also feels like the game has 'grown-up' in a sense.

Phylum 12-10-2012 03:56 AM

Don't misunderstand me. I love it, too.

The messing around GTA style was really what the world lacked if you ask me. The most fun to have in the open world was zooming around in hover bikes changing between high and low zones to avoid starting KG chases while moving between missions. The areas seemed interesting and they all had a certain structure, but realistically there was no difference in any of them save for the small portion of the markets that was inaccessible for vehicles.

The first two sewer levels especially were really well done. The levels that focused on metal heads were by far the best in the game. Early on they were scarce and made you anxious, especially in the sewer when the lights go out. Later on there are just hordes of them and fights can get intense, but never hopelessly overwhelming. In contrast the KG fight sections were far less fun.

The progression of the story was mostly well done. I'm glad they gave Jak a different personality. He was fine in the first game, but he needed something else for the series to continue. There were some really well done scenes, and some really poor ones. The sequence when Torn betrays the underground to the Baron because he threatens to kill Ashelin was pathetically cliched and forced. They could have easily developed their relationship in much better ways than that, especially given that they're never even in the same room until the final cutscene.

Mr. Bungle 12-10-2012 05:34 AM

I didn't really like the idea of having a story in Jak & Daxter, honestly. I thought it felt really cheesy and overly dramatic at times. I dunno, maybe it's because I'm used to platformers like Banjo-Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot, etc with incredibly simplistic storylines, the idea of having a serious plot just strikes me as... out of place.

I love Jak 2

For me, the Jak series just hasn't been all that memorable. With that said, I never owned a Jak game and didn't own a PS2 until all the hype died down. I remember there being a 'dark side' element to your character (can be done well, but sometimes it's overused) and I remember the race / police AI, which was somewhat strange.

I guess I'm not really all that used to linear games all that much. I sort of prefer things like Fallout and Super Mario Galaxy where you can go wherever you like, or rather you can choose your next path.

Meanwhile, I've been playing 24: The Game on PS2. Good if you like the series, but does have a few annoying things, like driving missions where you have to lose the police, which can be almost impossible sometimes. I've also been playing Assassin's Creed III storymode. I'm up to Connor now. The hunting is very fun, it actually reminds me of an old game like Oregon Trail where you play as a native american and survive in the wilderness, although that game was virtually unplayable and looked terrible. Overall ACIII is really great, look forward to more great games of this standard in the future.

I always preferred Ratchet & Clank.

Phylum 12-12-2012 06:47 PM

I don't like comparing them, really. Jak was a platformer at heart with some guns added in. RnC was a third-person action-adventure with some neat platforming.

That said, the Jak games were more ambitious and generally had more in them. RnC was always better story wise and more interesting to play.

I always preferred Ratchet & Clank.

So do I. But like what Phylum said, They are two different games and I don't like to compare them.

Same reason I never liked the comparison between Crash and Spyro

Hazel-Rah 12-13-2012 10:05 AM

Sly Cooper is the best franchise anyway

AlexFili 12-13-2012 10:07 AM

From my basic overview, they all seem to be decent third-person platformers. I did play Wrath of Cortex in Poland with my cousins on their Xbox, it is quite a charming little game. Not as polished as the Mario games, but fun and has that retro feel to it, that is missing from most modern games.

I'm having even more fun in Assassin's Creed III now that I have Connor's assassin robe. There's a lot of traveling between locations (optional fast travel available). One of the best things is moving through the forest and discovering new things and new hunting spots. I took down a bear by jumping down from a high ledge with my hidden blade and got another one in a melee attack. I also took down a cougar, some beavers and some elk. I've forgotten how much fun hunting can be in games of this genre.

Shit son

You don't say

Crashpunk 12-13-2012 02:58 PM

Crash: Wrath of Cortex could of been great if they didn't rush it out for the PS2 launch; same applies for Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly too. God those games were shite.

One of my greatest gaming shames is that I've never played a Sly Cooper game. Also I've never played though Banjo-Kazooie.

Same here, I always wanted to though.

Spyro: A Hero's Tail was significantly better than Enter the Dragonfly, if you plan on playing a PS2 Spyro, that's the one to go for. Although it's still nowhere near as good as the PS1 games.

Manco 12-13-2012 03:21 PM

And just flat-out ignore any Spyro game after Hero’s Tail.

Tired Glutton 12-13-2012 03:23 PM

I started playing miencraft again after quite a while and i'm addicted like never before, it's taking away all my time from actually completing other games( such a tragedy ), I loaded up my old world which had this sloppy wooden house on this small island covered in trees i planted and partially covered in cobblestone slabs, i flattened out the rest of my island and put more slabs down, knocked down part of my sloppy wooden house and built a bigger, better cobblestone house next to it.

I plan on building a giant cobblestone wall around my island with four great towers in the corners of the island that emit light ( Lava towers? people do those right? ), for now there are just four torches in the corners.

Not very impressive looking at the moment but i had fun building it all.

Strike Witch 12-13-2012 07:43 PM

I'm playing Zone of the Enders HD collection.

It's fun but there's a hell of a lot of backtracking.

Mac Sirloin 12-13-2012 09:56 PM

I'm playing Gungriffon BLAZE, a PS2 Mecha game that plays like Quake on rollerblades, you rocket around in robot jet pants shooting death rays and TAKING NO PRISONERS. It's one of the easiest to pick up games of this genre I've played (kind of like Tribes, Mechwarrior and Armored Core all mashed together into a nightmare frankenstein soup) but it's by no means easy. It looks a little dated, but I think it holds up very well considering it was released in freaking 2000. If you like robots and death and you see this game, pick it up. It's probably just 4$.

Phylum 12-14-2012 01:49 AM

I was really sick today, so I chipped away at an hour or so of my Kingdom Hearts 3D Critical Mode playthrough.

If you want to have fun with this game you'll want to play it through once, then move onto this with all of your spirits carried across. The bosses hit hard. A careless move can take at least half of your health off. The attacks aren't easy to avoid, but I never felt cheated when I was chained down. The hardest part of the last boss I took down was deciding when it was a good idea to heal and how to best position myself to do it. That slight delay when healing is stressful when you're one hit from death.

In that case, never play PVP multiplayer online, especially servers like Hunger Games and Project Ares where you play with lots of other players and try not to die!

Augh, I haven't played Banjo-Kazooie or MM yet, they're both really high on my list of games to play though.

I just beat Fable III and actually liked it, especially everything from The Battle for Albion right up until the end of the game. I especially like the moral choices that effect the treasury, definitely some of the less "black and white" moral decisions I've had to make in a game.

Mr. Bungle 12-14-2012 07:16 PM

They're probably my two favourite games. Well, I might put Tooie there instead of Kazooie. Maybe. But seriously dude, do it. Amazing games.

hedjeroo 12-14-2012 07:20 PM

I have so many games I need to play but all I can do is hop into Saints Row 3 on someone else's co-op and run a laser tank down the street. That and actually trying to get to Respect 50, since I just blitzed through the story missions on my first playthrough. More enthused about playing this game now because a bunch of people got it free and I have people to play it with.

A spattering of League of Legends and Terraria here and there. LoL is full of dicks as usual but hey, I enjoy my poisonous champs and I do scary things with Twitch. Terraria is just sort of being prodded to see if I can make it feel fresh again... meh.

I am playing nothing, just watching anime.
