Yet still, it would be nice to give us back the old soul-energy-bubbles. This chakra stuff felt odd (sadly not in the good meaning) for me. It just had that oomph when you see Abe's soul slowly leave his body, do some laps around him then strike into his enemies' mind.

But that's just my opinion.

STM 03-16-2017 12:32 PM

In a similar vain, I think OWI should try to make the chant portals more in resemblance of the originals. It's just one of those few things that really irked me in NnT. That familiar electric hum and those weird orange ball things were really funky looking.

Nemin 03-16-2017 12:34 PM

Oh yes! Those were amazing too!

How do you suppose that would that work in 3D?

Nemin 03-16-2017 12:55 PM

Well what about instead of 2D orange circles, they were 3D orange pulsating balls. And the portal between them could be a simple one-colored plane or if the hardware supports it a little sneak-peek into where the portal leads. Like you know, you see some grinders, or a pile of bones or brew, something like that.

I once made a diagram and graphic regarding a solution to how it would look in 3D.

I cannot find the diagram (unless some one else can dig it up in the old NnT hype threads) on my computer but essentially, it looked more or less like this with the top and bottom of the edges glowing that Abes Oddysee portal orange colour. Along the lines/edges of the tare, little zaps like the original would zip up and down at random intervals. Added onto that with a small view of where the escapee's were going would be cool too.

I liked the whole ruins coming through the portals effect and thought it was unique but the original was still more unique imo. Remakes tend to expand on the original, not completely replace what it was. Same goes for the laser scanners in the stock yards. The rail system was a good way to make that segment functional, but the original was executed nicer. They told us it was a very hard thing to do, same with the shadow areas, but I know its not something that is impossible.. I just hope that sort of stuff isnt carried over too much in soulstorm because there are a lot more shadow areas in that game than Oddysee.

Interesting. It could work, sans the orange orbs. I always thought they were stark and out of place, designed out of pure hardware limitations and for simplicity's sake rather than any aesthetic purpose. That's why the Big Face doesn't pop out of a similar portal at the end of the game. Similarly, whenever Abe travels via portal in a cutscene, it's represented by his spirt—a flock of birds parting or converging—as opposed to a physical portal.

I might be in the minority on this, but I prefer the New 'n' Tasty portal, as it's more akin to mudokon spirituality and their mystic ancestry. At the end of the day, it's a gameplay mechanic, and it doesn't bother me too much either way.

Of course, but since there are alot of people who worked on NnT who's to say they wouldnt bring over some of the new concepts that worked in that

I was specifically referring to the concept of shadow areas. My point is: even if there was a level in Exoddus that was /entirely/ shadow areas, there's nothing to suggest that even the concept itself exists in Soulstorm.

New game. New concepts. :)

Xavier 03-17-2017 04:45 AM

Still, it's the sequel to New 'n' Tasty... it would be a bit weird to have the portals and the possession effects changed again. I'd expect some continuity between the games.

Varrok 03-17-2017 05:32 AM

Sure, keep the mistakes from NnT in Soulstorm, sounds like a good plan.

No no I know, and as a new game we have to expect more unexpected concepts. Like how when we all flipped at the whistle notes appearing in NnT and how neat it was. Always open to new directions and so far every thing looks promising. I'm not sure if anyone else agrees with me, but sometimes things are better left unchanged. For example, Scrab noises.

This thread in my eyes is basically re-solidifying the concerns in case anything gets missed. Even though we all know how great you guys are communicating with us and watching us closely. Even if it feels a little pervy, its ok.

Well, I wouldn't go as far as to say the new posession vfx was an improvement.

Nemin 03-17-2017 08:11 AM

The possession was fine, it was the old spirit-blobs. The chant chakra stuff was the one that felt weird and kind of crappy.

Time for my annual post. I wholeheartedly support this idea; it would make for a better derivation of the original 2-D depiction.

Something akin to the portal at the end of Half-Life 2, which appeared as spherical tear in space-time --

We get it, Alex: "Soulstorm will be totally different... But I can't say more for the moment!". Nonetheless, we as fans, are allowed to speculate on the game's contents.

I had a crazy dream that a Soulstorm trailer was released that showed top down squad based gameplay....

That "it's a new game" comment is haunting me!

Alex please! Can we at least get some reassurance that Soulstorm will be a side scrolling puzzle platformer??

It will be an online only tabletop card cosmetic shop racing game with moba elements and Oddworld themes.

Tbh if an Oddworld themed moba ever saw the light of day I would weep. Old man battle slig in a tank like gyro from dota. Natives vs Industry. Man I could go on ive had so many ideas for it.. :lick: /endfanficshit

My bet is on Soulstorm featuring a toys-to-life spinoff game called 'Oddworlders', in the vein of Hand of Odd. One figure counts as one character in game, so for an army you have to buy dozens of them.

I actually wouldn't mind that.

Nemin 03-19-2017 07:49 AM

The beauty of the series is that nearly every type of game can nicely match with the universe.

RPG? Sure why not, there are a lot of Mudokon types, Fuzzles, maybe even trained Scrabs/Paramites. The Industrialists could have Glukkons, many types of Sligs, Vykkers, Greeters. For heroes there could be Abe, Munch, Stranger, for the Big Bads Molluck, the Brewmaster, the three Glukkon executives.

MOBA? See above.

FPS? There is already one, but imagine a multiplayer one. The two factions against eachother.

Visual novel? The story is complex enough, with interesting characters to be one.

Incremental game? Why not? You could be with the Magog Cartel producing foods or something like that and buying shoddy buildings and employing immoral tactics to boost production.

Platformer? Hmm well... this is the one, I couldn't believe the universe would fit. It just seems impossible and unfitting. /s

If that's real, I would ADORE a survival sim where I could play as a Scrab/Paramite/whatever, hunting food and raising mini me's. There's a couple games out called Shelter that do that already, with badgers and lynxes, but I'd love an Oddworld spin on it.

It's real, just a bit outdated. :) It was in the manual of Abe's Exoddus.

We're all speculating how we think Soulstorm will play out and OWI are just there like

http://i1.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/...72/493/c8d.png

All things considered I suppose I should say that I'm in love with how they're handling Soulstorm as a retooling of Exoddus. It's a very unique way to remake a game and Soulstorm will hopefully be able to stand out with its own identity as a result. They don't need to remake Exoddus beat by beat, because Exoddus already exists. That being said though, I think there'd be a hole in my heart if Necrum and the Mudomo & Mudanchee Vaults got the axe, mainly because I absolutely adore the visuals of these places.

I liked Necrum but i felt like Mudanchee/Mudomo were just Paramonia/Scrabania II. Not even that, Mudomo was just purple Mudanchee or vice versa or whatever.

Yes

And as far as Mudomo and Mudunchee perhaps they Will be elaborated to stand out as their own unique places, I hope so. I personally loved and thought they were cool. (Mudomo fo' life)

Pretty much everything listed in the OP.

NnT's atmosphere seems really bad compared to that of the original game and I believe it's because of the random idle chatter that was added without a clear reason.

I'm also glad I'm not the only one that thought the in-game animations from NnT sucked ass, because there doesn't seem to be a real transition between them, and instead bend one over another and are sped up hoping no one will notice.

Not a fan of the out of place colored light and bloom either because it ruined the dark scenes. So did the glowing eyes.

The sound was also bad. Important sounds always getting muffled by other ambient sfx and the music itself.

I'm also hoping with all my heart that the old visor sligs will make a return. I hate the new design ever since the cutscenes from exoddus. The heartless and menacing sligs from oddysee would fit better with the dark theme soulstorm has.

Gunnr 04-27-2017 01:28 PM

So it seems Soulstorm will release in 2018, yes?
On one hand i was hoping for late this year...-_-
On the other hand...it must be getting pretty good °u°

Fix the glitches. New 'n' Tasty had quiet a few. Such as falling through the floor or telwporting to a well when I tried to mount Elum. There were also times where sound effects and voices would turn off. And the deaths loom really awkward like the recently deceased resembled puppets without any strings pulled with some even going through the floor.
