I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'm looking forward to seeing what he'll look like in-game when he's fully textured. It'll be interesting to see how different he animates and speaks if they're going for a more gritty game.

You're right: based on experience, Abe could look, in SoulStorm, totally different from this picture.

acedude 05-18-2016 01:56 PM

Plot Twist: The game will be entirely gray-scale. Ha but my biggest downside is I wish his ponytail was a little bit longer. I really enjoy the texture, just a little longer is how I would have done it. One upside is its not New 'n' Tasty's model, which irked at me constantly for some reason. On a side note, are we getting a poster (https://twitter.com/OddworldInc/stat...513976066048)?

Havoc 05-18-2016 02:25 PM

I am... conflicted. This new look is quite a big departure from the Abe we've all come to love over the past 20 years. It will certainly take some getting used to. It might look a lot more natural in color and moving.

This makes me really wonder how much they've changed the other character's appearances though. Redesigned Sligs and Glukkons... oh boy :o

JayDee 05-18-2016 03:24 PM

Hairy Sligs confirmed?

Alf Shall Rise 05-18-2016 03:35 PM

I'm going to be honest, he looks weird as hell. Not that I have a problem with it but goddamn, his eyes really are huge.

Though like what Havoc said, I'm kind of looking forward to see what other species are going to look like. Might end up really cool.

Are you saying he looks a bit....odd :spin:

V_O_T 05-18-2016 06:24 PM

It's weird but growing on me. In a good way too. I mean, now I have to picture this style of Mudokon getting blended, shot, eaten, electrocuted and beaten in a more serious and darker tone setting. With a touch of humor.

And because Abe looks a bit more "human", it kinda gets to me.

Looking forward to seeing what they reveal next. Maybe they'll do an online puzzle separate from the ARG that will unlock images of the other characters/inhabitants.

The fuck why does Abe have elf ears now

Haven't Mudokon ears always been on the pointy side?

My first thought was that he looked a bit too small and meek. I think that's more to do with the facial expression than the model, though. So I think it's fine.

32degrees 05-19-2016 03:54 AM

The new look already grown on me, but let's be honest the in game model now that's the important one now that's what I can't wait to see.

STM 05-19-2016 04:52 AM

I wonder at what point OWI made the decision to change Abe's 'hair' into feathers. In AO it looks like some weird ass wormy thing.

Lock The Mudokon 05-19-2016 05:27 AM

Personally I think Abe looks GREAT! his way more refined and looks like he has a story to tell, he seems more than just a cartoon now, I really like the realistic approach.

It's quite apparent that his mouth and overall jaw area is smaller, I noticed this straight away as in the original games his face is longer but that's not an issue for me, as I feel he looks better then ever.

Gunnr 05-19-2016 07:55 AM

I actually like this style.
Some differences I see are yes the eyes, they are less protrusive and a bit smaller but also appear less cartoony more expressive. His skull looks shorter or maybe at a different angle like pulled back instead of up?
Then his skin also looks thicker and smoother and not so loose like designs before, it makes him look younger- but no issues with me there (one would need thick skin in oddworld ). His stictches look a tad higher, I guess and his nose mound looks more beaklike, however to me that makes since muds are desended from birds.

I also mentioned before that I love what they did with his hair as you can see individual feathers hint again at his birdlike ancestry. The only problem I have is that the ponytail is shorter ( I was actually hoping it'd be long like from old concept art) but the sparse out/spikey look of it is starting to grow on me. (Looks a scrab made off with a piece of it jk) The shortened style seems more practical.

As a whole I think he looks more expressive still sympathetically adorable and still very "Abe". This look actually gives me that alien Exoddus feel I first felt playing the game about a weird alien.

I find it a definate improvement from the NnT design for the gritty atmosphere that Soulstorm is made out to be.

I would really like to see OWI's colored version of this and far more so to see this Abe in action, farts, interactions and all ;)

(But I hope to Odd they tone down the dazzling aura thing during his chant I miss the blue orbs)

Talvy 05-19-2016 09:50 AM

As a hardcore perfectionist myself, I still find it weird how obsessed everyone are about the details.

Yikes, a little too bright but if it where a little more faded then yeah. Can't wait to see OWI's colored in version. You think they'll keep the freckles?

STM 05-19-2016 10:17 AM

I think they'll need to change the colour of his eyes to better contrast his skin tone but other than that it looks great!

Holy Sock 05-19-2016 02:48 PM

It's obviously a bit jarring but I was expecting to dislike the new look based on the sneak peek. But it's an interesting new look.

They always were feathers. They just weren't able to render them well.

STM 05-19-2016 10:37 PM

Ohhh...but even in the artworks y'know? Well hey one of little mysteries solved...

Gunnr 05-23-2016 05:25 PM

Imagine that face getting zapped in a bad ending ooou

Fatherbrain30 05-24-2016 10:50 AM

As Abe gets more in touch with his native side, he grow out his feathers more. I like it.

Gunnr 06-02-2016 07:59 PM

Made a little collage of a few of Abe's faces over the years. Check out the differences/similarities. (:

I picked pictures that were in a similar angle as the Soulstorm reveal.

(One of these pics I know is a sculpture but I put it there since it exsisted before the SS Abe and looks closest his new face)

Tired Glutton 06-08-2016 06:22 AM

the eye and head size dont sit quite right with me but i could get used to it

FennecFyre 06-08-2016 09:48 AM

Yeah, his head definitely got a bit smaller and pointer in the new version, but it could just be the angle. It actually looks a lot closer to some of the very first concept art pieces. Also note how he slowly goes from green to purple over the years. Guy's gonna look like a blueberry by the time Soulstorm comes out.

Personally, I like the MO version of Abe best, design-wise.

STM 06-08-2016 10:15 AM

FennecFyre, don't you know nothing about MO can be good? Rookie mistake.

My favourite Abe was Stranger's Wrath Abe.

Tbh I'm gonna say AO is my fav abe...but actually he looks coolest in the concept art

FennecFyre 06-08-2016 11:49 AM

The gameplay was eh, but the cutscenes were good quality. Fight me.

Tired Glutton 06-08-2016 09:17 PM

i'm with fennec here on both accounts, MO abe's colours especially always looked really nice to me.

Michael 06-10-2016 12:15 PM

Is the Exoddus mechanic of muds changing colour depending on their emotions actually considered canon? Maybe that can explain Abe's growing purple hue, as he gets increasingly tired and cynical :p

For me the biggest change in the new Abe is the 'nose' section being smoother, i.e. less of a heavy crease in his skin. Whilst I do think he looks more natural, like the skin is properly formed around his skull which has a much more defined shape, he seems to have lost some character.

Colouring, especially lighter and darker areas, could make things look very different really.

Pretty much, although Abe was said to have the skin color he has because he is believed to be the Messiah and the Mudokon savior - there's also an instance where it's been said he may have been born with the hue on his skin reflecting the spirits' (or something) sadness over the Mudokons being enslaved.

Edit: found something to cite with this :P

http://oddworldlibrary.net/toe/FAQ#W...kons_are_green
:

Why is Abe blue‐skinned when most Mudokons are green?

Ancient Mudokon prophecy tells of a Mudokon with blue skin who will save his people form slavery and use as a natural resource.28, 29 Abe’s skin colouration fulfils this prophecy, but how it’s explained more scientifically is not certain. Mudokons are chamæleonic in that their skin changes to reflect their mood. Sad Mudokons appear blue, and even though Abe can be happy, underneath he is depressed by the history and potential fate of his kind.30

Alf teases that it might have something to do with a wager the Mudokons had with Abe when they worked at RuptureFarms, losing a bet that Abe couldn’t hold a mouthful of Paramite Juice for ten minutes without swallowing.31:20 He has also joked that the difference may be down to diet.32:16

It does also state that Mudokons change skin tone depending on their mood, I never really personally liked that though except for the whole deal with Abe being depressed with the fate of his kind

Gunnr 06-10-2016 01:08 PM

Well I can't wait to see how OWI colors Abe in this time 'round. Will it stick closer with the new n tasty or more true to the older color schemes, maybe a slight bit or much more different than that? Any thoughts until a colored version is posted on their media?

(Though I'd be happy with a front facing Abe render at least before the year is up)

Interesting, thanks! So I guess the typical slave muds all being the same colour could be attributed to their apathy, whereas Abe is more naturally empathetic.

That's something the others could learn though. Presumably other muds could become abe's colour then, through time. Would be funny if they threw a twist in the quintology, that Abe isnt the prophecised one after all. Turns out, it's Alf, who grew a lot more considerate after being rescued :goof:

If Frank Herbert has taught me anything, it's that when you put someone up on a pedestal, all you do is set them up to fall.

The messiah is only going to lead his people to one place: Total and utter decimation. His maudlin skin tone is a prescient allegory; not only reflective of the past and present, but the future also.

Lorne has always said the ending will be a tragedy.
