No. I meant perpetrated. Like they created the myth, and forced it upon us. Not that they have continued, and popularized it.

I think "perpetrate" only really works with other verbs. All the synonyms are basically "do". You can't "do" an abstract noun.

But the meaning of perpetrate is "to be responsible for." I think you can be responsible for an abstract noun.

I define it as "commit, carry out, do". To the dictionaries!

I will concede that many perpetratable acts are abstract nouns, however - theft, murder etc.

I still think that works. They "carried out" a mission of misinformation which caused us to believe that straight people can get AIDS.

It's beginning to sound like I'm actually arguing that straight people can't get AIDS.
