The thing is, I don't really have any nostalgia. Which makes me wonder which games are objectively the best, since the historical value is what people usually cite in support of the older ones.

Where Am I?
Long setup, decent payoff.

FUCK YOU

I'm starting to see a pattern in repetitive game serieses.

Game K1 was good.
K2 improved on K a lot.
K3 only improved on K2 a little.
K4 was actually slightly worse than K3.

Now, original fans of the K series would say K1 was the best out of nostalgia.
People who started with K2 would say that K2 was better, as even though it reused K1's mechanics, the total quality was higher.
K3's generation would probably admit that K2 was the best, as though K3 was of the most polished quality, the innovation of K2 makes playing that seem somehow more genuine.
All three generations would hate K4, as it had no innovation and total quality below the sum of its parts.

Someone who never played any K could be said to be of the K4+ generation. Their experiences will be based on what they have seen most recently. Herein lies the question.

K4, subjectively speaking, is a bad game. It's worse than its predecessor. However, objectively speaking, it's better than K1, as it still incorporates the improvements of K2&3. The K1 generation would be outraged, but would that asessment really be wrong?

Later Pokemon games apparently contain less dramatic improvements than the previous ones. But if I, as a new player with no loyalty to speak of, just want to have fun, are they really such a bad idea?

I think that's a pretentious load of shite and will tell you that every generation of Pokemon is at least 'Very good' with G2, G4-2 and G5 being 'Amazing'.

MeechMunchie 08-31-2012 08:12 AM

That was a general observation. If you take one thing away from this conversation, it should be that I know nothing about Pokemon games.

Wings of Fire 08-31-2012 08:18 AM

Every generation has massive gameplay and balance improvements over the last one, and Generation V actually has a story and characters who have character, making it feel more like the (incredible) pokemon manga and less like the (horrible) pokemon anime.

Also, frankly, I think the ugliest pokemon are from Generation III, at least GV tried to do a lot of new things.

Varrok 08-31-2012 08:30 AM

I believe some players find MM's observation fitting for MGS series

Good. This is a win-win for me anyway, because I don't have to play "the worse ones", whichever may fit that description, but the fact that I'll be able to enjoy triple battles and not-black-and-white-o-vision without having to compromise on overrall quality is welcome.

OANST 08-31-2012 09:04 AM

I fucked myself pretty good in Darksiders 2. I chose to do a side quest that I really wasn't leveled up enough for, and am now in a spot where I have to win a fight that I'm not sure I can. I can't go back (I managed to get stuck in the one place in the dungeon where it's impossible to backtrack), and I can't move forward without killing a fuckload of overpowered enemies. Anyway, I almost got out last night. I just have to keep fighting smarter, and I'll get through it eventually.

Varrok 08-31-2012 09:06 AM

Couldn't you just load a previous savegame?

OANST 08-31-2012 09:10 AM

No. Darksiders 2 doesn't really let you create multiple saves for some reason.

Edit: I just discovered that if I toggle the map to the world map I can fast travel out of the dungeon. Thank fucking god.

Nepsotic 08-31-2012 10:42 AM

I wish you could do that in Skyrim.

I was about to suggest that.

I just got to the third world in DS2, kind of disappointed that visually it's a lot like the first one, was hoping each would be really unique. Other than that and some other gripes, game is really good.

OANST 08-31-2012 11:42 AM

What level were you when you took on Ghorn in The Scar?

I have done none of the sidequests, think I will start on all those. I'm fairly certain I'm level 16 or 17 right now, though.

OANST 08-31-2012 12:31 PM

You should be just about right for that one. I'm level 12 (haven't even left The Forge Lands yet), and it rocked my ass, but I think three or four more levels should have made it pretty easy.

Edit: Got through it at level 13 last night. I fast traveled out, did a different side quest, leveled up, found a possessed scythe, leveled that up four times, went back and breezed through it.

I remembered I had Final Fantasy VI on my Wii, so I've been playing that. It's fun, but I don't know how to get to the other continent without my ship. Kinda confused about that.

Don't you like, go through the monster plateau or something?

Phylum 09-03-2012 12:44 AM

Did I mention that War§ow is the best thing ever?

It's amazing. Any fan of competitive FPS TDM or duels would be mad not to give it a look. It feels like a tighter and better version of CPMA. It looks like the initial interest in Aus is tapering off, with most people going back to Quake Live, sadly.

I had the pleasure of trying some Portal 2 multiplayer with a friend over the weekend. Very fun, well-designed puzzles and GLaDOS’ humor is just pitch-perfect. Only played the first 2 courses though.

I'm also playing FFIV, the remake for the GBA. Just started yesterday. I tried emulating it a couple of ways but it kept crashing. This is the only one of the FF Advance remakes that I think suffers from the redone spritework. Characters are just a little too flashy for the horrible industrial tundra.

Apparently they're making Final Fantasy xiii. I hope your joysticks are duct taped forwad.

Aww, I wanna play! I have hardly any Steam friends, though. Someone play with me? :(

I am an expert in Portal!

Crashpunk 09-03-2012 09:32 AM

Aren't you in the Oddworld Forums Steam group?

Yes.

Yes.

Well you can't have STM, he's already made commitments.

I was at the part shortly after the War ends, when Kefka is in jail. I'm now looking for the Espers that have been running around causing shenanigans, as Terra and that thief guy (whose name escapes me as I named him after my cat). I'm not quite sure where to go now; this game can be very vague on objective details... very vague.

But it wouldn't be FF if it wasn't like that, I guess.

Have you been to a town called Thamas yet and met Stragos and Relm? If not, that's your next destination. You go to Albrook and get a ship with General Leo to the place where it is.

It's funny because it's true.

Mac Sirloin 09-04-2012 06:18 AM

I'm playing the Donkey Kong Country remakes for the Gameboy Advance. For some reason DKC3's music is completely different from the SNES release, but it was done by the same guy at Rare. I played these more than anything else when I was a kid.

Nepsotic 09-04-2012 10:58 AM

Well, I finished the Amnesia DLC! (Still haven't finished the actual game, yet) Justine's voice is so hot, it's like pure sex.

Varrok 09-04-2012 11:17 AM

You've already experienced pure sex? Wow, man

MeechMunchie 09-04-2012 12:21 PM

Pure in the sense that there was only one person.

OANST 09-04-2012 12:42 PM

Still playing Darksiders 2. Jesus Christ but the City of the Dead dungeon was immense. I've played entire games that were shorter than that dungeon. And I don't mean flash games. I wasn't that crazy about the Earth dungeon, but it made up for it with the next two. There were a couple of good head scratcher puzzles in the final two dungeons as well, which was nice. I'm about at the end of the game now, but I'm going to go search out the things that I know I missed before completing it.

That's funny, I've been playing the original three on my Wii recently. I forgot how damn challenging these games can be. Especially the second and third. Still, such classic games. I could play them all the time.

In my pre-university boredom, I've started replaying Tony Hawk's Underground 2. I loved this game when I was younger; it's scary to think that it's almost eight years old. I blitzed through the story mode in a couple of days on the hardest setting, but I fully expected to. I was pretty competent when I first played it, and my manual dexterity has only improved in the seven or so years since I last played it. I now have the classic mode to look forward to, which I never completed when I was younger.

I remember getting the game when I was a lot younger on the original Xbox, I loved every bit of it. I also thought the hardest difficulty was actually pretty easy but when I tried it out a few years ago, I just couldn't beat the last mission in Skatopia.

Also, that classic mode had me raging for many days, it's really hard.

The best thing about the game though was unlocking all those secret characters (with cheats of course!). Oh yeah and the level editor was beast and me and my friend spent many, many hours playing with that thing.

Crashpunk 09-05-2012 11:13 AM

I've played a bit of Metal Gear Solid 3 and I'm having trouble being... stealthy. I just keep running in and killing everyone cause hiding doesn't seem to work for me. I've also ran out of bullets for my tranquillizer gun so now all I have is a knife. Not the greatest start but I'm going to continue cause I remember how much I love MGS2.

Oh and I've also played Wii Sports and Wii Sports resort with friends on random occasions. It's actually still fun, partially the bike racing on Resort and Boxing on Wii Sports.

Stealth in MGS3 is a bit different experience from the previous games in series - You can try caring more about the camouflage, use first person view to search for possible enemies, and crawl more

Wings of Fire 09-05-2012 11:41 AM

In other words it actually requires skill.

Bullet Magnet 09-05-2012 12:01 PM

Use a bush instead of a box in outdoor segments.
