How exactly does one get the impression of uncanny valley from a completely non-human character?

:

God, where did the Hheeegh originate from? I seem to remember it being either me, and Strike Witch, or Mac, and Strike Witch, but I can't remember from where exactly.
If I remember correctly, Strike Witch was either trying to mock me or insult me, and I guess she thinks I make that noise.

MeechMunchie 05-09-2012 03:15 PM

It's a legend damned to be lost in the mists of time.

So, how about that Munch HD, eh?

The bathroom.

Also I think that term has become so diluted it's lost all meaning. Like deconstruction.

Strike Witch 05-09-2012 07:54 PM

Yeah, Hheeegh was my creation. Though it really is the noise Sekto makes when masturbates to gay punk porn.

Sekto Springs 05-09-2012 08:05 PM

I suppose you would know, white girl.

You're as confused as I am.

Oddworld, while non-human, is meant to be very much alive, and it just looks as though its made of wax. Very much the same as lots of attempts to render humans (I honestly think that Half-Life 2 is one of the few games to get it right, as it was stylized rather than attempting to imitate exactly), but the problem here is that there is no frame of reference. SW got it pretty much right, but most of the talking creatures had beaks, so it is a little easier to do :3

Sekto Springs 05-10-2012 11:15 AM

I know what you're saying, but uncanny valley refers to when something looks a little too realistic, not when it's lacking in realism. Even if the renders in Oddworld were stunningly real, you still wouldn't be in uncanny valley, as they are completely fictional characters that have no real-life counterparts to be compared to.

I would say that in this case, the renders are just lacking in character. Of course, they're still a major improvement over the pale, soulless, wall-eyed models from the original version. Still not as good as the FMV render though.

My favourite example.

My least favourite example.

From the same blog:

:

“Uncanny Valley” does not necessarily refer to things that are trying to be realistic, nor does it mean “anything you think is ugly”. Specifically, the term “Uncanny Valley” was meant to refer to robots, saying that people will like things that look like obvious abstractions of people, and people will like things that look exactly like people, but people are repulsed by things that look almost like people but not quite.

It’s important to understand the limits of a style you’ve chose to work in. Realistic designs have to move realistically, stylized cartoons have to move like cartoons. Disney’s Cinderella can’t make the same boisterous exaggerated acting that her stepsisters do because her design is so much more conservative than theirs that it would look absurd and out of place. When cartoony characters move like humans, you get that cheap rotoscope/mo-cap look, but when real people move like cartoons you get the Black Hole Sun music video.

The further removed from reality something is, the harder it is to show subtlety and the bigger it needs to act. However, the more realistic something is supposed to be, the more horrifying it looks when you exaggerate it past normal limits.

I guess the point I'm trying to steal here is that if something makes efforts to seem realistic, even fictitious things, it'll always feel uncomfortable when it breaks away from that. I wouldn't want to see a Slig's spine bent backwards.

However since a) Oddworld, and Munch in particular, is quite cartoony in its proportions and presentation and b) The renders aren't really that much of a departure from the most realistic versions we've seen, it's pretty much moot in this case.

SpAM_CAN 05-11-2012 01:08 PM

Anyway, I just think that it looks a bit flat is all (though at least it'd be more dynamic than the couple of frame animation that was there)

Rayrockslots 05-16-2012 05:26 AM

Please change it back! And could you make him pop out a little door and say "hello" like Abe did in his two games? That always annoyed me when I started playing MO :fuzmad:

Michael 06-06-2012 07:06 PM

Hey! Gametrailers.com has a few videos of Munch HD and SWHD running on the Vita!

Munch videos:

http://www.gametrailers.com/game/odd...-oddysee/16544

Stranger videos:

http://www.gametrailers.com/game/odd...rs-wrath/13787

Munch is looking good! There's still a 'boing' sound when Abe jumps, but I think it sounds like it's quite a bit deeper than before and less noticeable.

It's a shame there aren't more videos, I thought there would have been more.

In my opinion, from that HD picture Munch's eyes look bad. Like somebody pushed them into head. The hell?

His eyes definitely don’t look so bugged out any more. I personally don’t find it a bad thing, though – he doesn’t look like he’s tripping balls while staring into the abyss any more.

Varrok 06-07-2012 12:56 AM

But... but that was the design. He just fells... less.. Odd.

SpAM_CAN 06-07-2012 01:24 AM

I can't say that I like the Touch-Gamespeak (though it is what I expected you to do, its the obvious solution to the less buttons on the Vita). Its looking good though guys! The only other thing is that the look sensitivity seems to be really high on Stranger, though that could either be the guy playing or a control option.

Love it, can't wait to get my hands on them both.

Glitch was constantly worried that Munch's eyeballs were about to fall out of his head, so tda shoved them into his head. He looks more sympathetic now, less of that "Odditude" nonsense.

Nate 06-07-2012 03:33 AM

I'm pretty sure that PC image is stretched horizontally. Probably best not to compare them too closely.

Varrok 06-07-2012 03:41 AM

I wouldn't call him sympathetic now. He creeps me out.

How?

The old one looks like he’s being strangled and overinflated simultaneously, while staring at you with wide eyes that are about to fall out of his skull.

Crashpunk 06-07-2012 04:20 AM

Munch looks really improved in my opinion. I like the purple tint you added to him. (unsure if that's just lighting or the actual model) anyway, looks great guys :)

I think the old look fits to him being a mix between fish and reptile. Will they change him in rerendered cutscenes too?

EDIT: And now with pushes eyes he's more mudokon-ish equals less unique than before, here I covered the protruding part of his mouth so it's easier to see the similarity:

oh god this threads turning into the sonic fan community! (as in nitpicking eyes)
Am I the only one who doesn't see a difference in the eyes? Or care for that matter?

Varrok 06-07-2012 04:42 AM

If this was sonic fanforum here, I'd whine about him being more purple (that whole tint), but I'm perfectly ok with that.
REMOVE IT!!!!! muahahahahaha

tda 06-07-2012 05:21 AM

I'll just drop this one here for you guys, the proportions of the new model are identical to the proportions of the old game model for technical reasons. The model they used for the FMV's has always been different. You'd have to ask the guys who made the models for the original game why they changed the proportions of the in-game model vs. the FMV one. Same goes with the colour too, i used the old ingame texture as a colour palette for the new one. There's also probably also a bit of perspective trickery going on that's making the new one look different, i thought the old stuff had way too high FOV.

As far as actually changing the menus goes, well, the old menu was actually a sequence of 640x480 compressed movies files. We could have left those in, scaled them up and stretched em out to a 16:9 ratio...

Also i think the gamma on that new HD menu image is way off, its too dark, which makes munch look more purple than he actually is

Varrok 06-07-2012 05:40 AM

I was kidding about being not satisfied with more purple color

That's about all I can say.

Varrok 06-07-2012 11:19 AM

And I thought I was harsh with my opinion about eyes

MeechMunchie 06-07-2012 11:31 AM

It's a shame about the geometry, really.

Varrok 06-07-2012 11:34 AM

They did the best they could (excluding eyes), the enviroment textures look mostly better. It'd be nice if it was possible to add more shadows, it'd really improve levels like http://www.flickr.com/photos/jawltd/...in/photostream

DarkHoodness 06-07-2012 12:48 PM

I think it looks good considering it's Munch's Oddysee we're talking about here. I don't think there's a lot more they can do to improve it without rebuilding it from scratch.

Good work, JAW. :)

STM 06-07-2012 01:27 PM

Can we hear the scrab/paramite sounds? ^^

Wil 06-07-2012 01:31 PM

Hmmm, interesting proposal. I'll ask tomorrow.
