Welcome to the Oddworld Forums.

This is why we can't have nice things. Neg rep for you.

EDIT: Why not simply enjoy what you're given instead of disrespecting it by picking it apart? Not cool. I've flagged your post.

It's not a malicious 'picking it apart', it's merely feeding curiousity... Besides, 100% flawless sprites have been hunted by people on this forum everywhere.

DarkHoodness 12-17-2011 05:43 AM

EDIT: Being over-zealous through sleep deprivation. Never mind, forget what I said.

Sharing the ripped sprites still seems a bit disrespectful though, IMO.

Feeding curiosity by ripping the sprites out of something that was meant to be a gesture of goodwill, and then sharing them with everyone? I can't speak for him but I'm sure that when Glitch made that flash, he didn't want someone to do that, considering he put protection on it. Which you broke. And that's totally disgraceful.

From the POV of an observer: Banter between members and occasionally going off-topic is fair enough (hell, I'm doing it now, kinda) - Most of the stuff that happens here adds flavour to the community. But over the last couple of days I've seen some of you stoop to new lows with pointless image spamming and stuff like this. Seriously guys, what is wrong with some of you? You'd think by how you're acting that some of you don't appreciate Oddworld, what JAW is doing, or respect these forums.

You all know better. I'm asking you: Please stop dragging this place down further than it already is.

Well what's done is done now. Besides, you're the only one I see complaining.

Also, what difference does it make ripping sprites from the actual game and from the flash? Its' the same sprites, but cleaner. I enjoyed the flash very much, it took me back.

Crashpunk 12-17-2011 05:47 AM

I do know what you mean. I think because we're bored out of our minds. Also how is ripping the sprites that were used in the very thing we are talking about spamming?

Glitch 12-17-2011 06:18 AM

It's not really a problem. I guess I would be happier if those images weren't floating around the Internet, if only to stop random people making crappy abe ish games that drag down the name. That said I can't blame the guy for doing it, I probably would have done the same.

Like that awful flash game with the horrid sound effects?

Not your game obviously Glitch, I was referring to the other Abe flash game.

Haha I love this, by far the best Christmas goody Oddworld has ever done! Did anyone else try it loads of times, to see if you could run out of the way and avoid the sign after pulling the lever? I couldn't, by the way :p

I agree that this does look much crisper visually than the originals, and the animations seem more fluid. I wonder if there are actually more frames, or whether this is just due to the sprites being uncompressed compared with the originals? The crouch seems slower to me, yet smoother, which suggests more frames

Scraby 12-17-2011 07:27 AM

i tried running but the edge of the sign caught abe and he fell.

Sekto Springs 12-17-2011 08:37 AM

Wow, I'm kind of floored at how you guys treated Luke. All he did was rip sprites. It's been done a million times before, and I know a lot of you ungrateful bastards probably make use of the old ones in one way or another.

This is "picking apart" a christmas e-card, not the game itself. You guys will get up in arms over the dumbest shit, I swear.

Glitch 12-17-2011 11:59 AM

The sprites are the original renders from AO uncompressed (well, a little compressed). I can't comment on the animations being more fluid or not, although it is true that there's a bunch of animations that they rendered but didn't use. It's totally possible that they didn't use all the frames that were rendered to save on memory.

STM 12-17-2011 12:39 PM

Aww man I came a little bit. Sexy.

Mr.Spandexpants 12-17-2011 03:03 PM

Scrab, stop looking at porn in another tab.

And given the extent to which the actual games have been picked apart, this is nothing.

Ohhh what I would give to see those ! xD And yeah they look more fluid because the motion blur on them is more visible than in the actual game.

Paul 12-18-2011 05:25 AM

I can see why they where downsized for the PSX (due to memory etc) but also because even though those sprites are at least x2 more awesome I don't find its actually that noticeable?

In fact it seems to have taken a few posts before someone even noticed! Although I think in the flash app they've been scaled down a bit too so maybe that's why?

Glitch 12-18-2011 06:20 AM

not scaled down. They've not been scaled at all. The whole thing is the same rez as Abe from back in the day; 640x480. If anything it's not been scaled up

Fuzzle Guy 12-18-2011 09:58 AM

Remember when Paul first ripped the sprites of AO? We were all thrilled, be it for the purpose of fan art, fan games or it's simply nice to have them.

One of the great things about Oddworld is it has encouraged so much creativity in it's fans. Personally as a Screenwriter, it has been a heavy influence in my story telling - my first ever script was an Oddworld one when I was 10. Yes it was awful but it was a start.

I'm sure there are aspiring game developers out there who want to show their appreciation in a similar way by creating a basic Oddworld game.

For every ten royally shit fan games created with it there will be a good one so I don't really have any issue with the sprites being ripped. It's not as though it was a hate crime - it was an act of passion and adoration at the end of the day.

DarkHoodness 12-18-2011 10:44 AM

In hindsight I can see that Luke wasn't doing it to be malicious, and I also realise that me using ripped music and voices from Abe's Oddysee for the Minecraft project I'm working on is a similar thing to what Luke was doing - I woke up this morning, re-read what I posted yesterday afternoon and didn't understand why I was being so hypocritical, or why I made a mountain out of a molehill.

So yep, this is what happens when I post while sleep deprived or when my judgement is impaired - And that's a poor excuse considering I've done it before at some point. Perhaps it's for the best that I mostly lurk and don't post very often.

@Glitch: Ah, so that's why they look so clear and why people are (stupidly) wondering if it's Abe HD. Maybe that's a homage to the clarity of the sprites, though.

Fuzzle Guy 12-18-2011 11:27 AM

Yeah, I mean come on guys! Let's be honest, what's the worst people could do even if they do have the sprites?

Jordan 12-18-2011 02:03 PM

That makes Abe look so saucy. "Look under my loin cloth for a blank space."

"Look under my loin cloth for a blank space."

Well, no reproductive organs means no chance of pregnancy, right? ;)

Needless to say that's one of the tamer things I've seen done with ripped sprites.

I don't think there's going to be any really bad sprite comics being produced by 10 year olds with Abe any time soon.

(... this is of course asking for it)

Mr.Spandexpants 12-19-2011 11:02 PM

Nek minnit.

[EDIT] To contribute to the conversation, I don't really think many ten year olds know of, let alone make sprite comics of, Abe.

But the PSX version is 320x240, the PC version is 640x240 scaled to 640x480 ;)
